look at current boutique-frames. Its not really fair to compare mass-market stuff with the high-end niche.
The "cheap" bikes then were way worse in build/weld quality as the stuff most people buy today.

Austria is one of the worst destinations for mountainbiking.
They have a few great spots/bikeparks, but riding is fined VERY HIGH everywhere..... Even of forest-roads. A true real-life joke.
If you want to ride the alps, go Italy, Switzerland or France.
