At Kona we take great pride in making high-performing, durable, fairly-priced, super fun to ride bikes that aren't bound to one specific genre of cycling. Utilitarian steeds you might call them. The Shred has always been one of our most versatile bikes. And new for 2013, this long-time Kona classic gets an entirely new frame design. By intent, the Shred is built to do it all, and do it tough. What can best be described as half dirt jumper, half trail ripper, and 100 per cent mountain bike, the Shred's updated frame has round tubes for a clean and classic look, but with a functional purpose too, most notably a better strength-to-weight ratio. Go deep with confidence good friends. Shred forever. Go to konaworld.com for local pricing and dealer info.

that color and logo graphic are terrible. even a wal mart huffy looks meaner. i'll pay $100 more for a paintjob that looks halfway cool, screw "fairly priced" if that's what it looks like. (this coming from a guy with a bright pumpkin orange '99 Mano Mano)
  • 19 1
A bit disappointing to be honest...

I sincerely don't like where bike design is heading... (speaking about the entry level bikes) When I started riding, a friend of mine had a shred and I could only dream with one... this one... It doesn't work for me...

I know what you'r saying, this looks like a carrera, i reckon the older ones are far nicer looking, here's my 2003 one (yep, ten years old now)
www.pinkbike.com/u/Tomajd/album/kona-Shred
but although i reckon mine looks far better who am I to complain, i bet this re-incarnation will perform ten times better than mine ever has. kona know what they are doing and have always produced good performing bikes and I bet this will be no exception to that rule Smile

had a scrap 06, the bike held up good to my beginner riding, i liked it a lot. but the geometry was not so good. this one looks a lot more playful, i wonder how it rides in reality!
  • 7 10
not even worth the article, that paint kills it

This bike would have made my day 12 years ago!

I had an old Specialized Hardrock, and I swapped a second-hand Marzocchi Z.1 onto that baby, and had the time of my life!

Today, older, I look at this and think: "That's 3 different bikes I own...", but for the new rider, go for it.
And screw the paint, because in riding it, you'll probably do just that!

Cheers!

damn kona you are blowing it with this one. not even a quality fork on an ugly bike
  • 22 2
I disagree with a lot of the previous comments. I think this bike IS on the right track. It's simple, and looks great for somebody getting into the world of riding. I would definitely ride one given the opportunity. It would be a great frame to build off of (component wise), and I think it's kind of exciting to see Kona getting back on top of things. This push back to simpler, more effective all-round bikes is really cool in my opinion, and smart. This bike could be taken in so many directions, and is immensely more versatile than the last version. It looks to be significantly lighter and with more effective geo. Appreciate what this bike has to offer, the paint is the only con I see, and it is pretty neutral, so you could even play off that! Great looking bike.
  • 6 8
I agree. Looks like the got the design from a crappy walmart bike. (and components)
  • 20 4
I can't believe you kids, this is ridiculous! The first ten comments are you guys ripping on the colors? It's a entry level bike for a kid getting started. Mt. Biking is not a fashion show. Yes I have nice bikes and they do look nice but that's because I've rode for a long time and bought products that function and came with colors that worked. People spend more time color coordinating the bikes than they do riding them. Grow up children a ugly bike rides as well as one you can see from a mile away.
  • 2 0
(At least for me, when I mean "design" is not only for color and graphics...)
  • 4 1
Weird, it couldnt have Deore shifting for $850 retail? Looks like production cost is around $200.
Spinner fork? really?

The 67deg head angle sounds good though.

BTW good vid nice riding.

That guy rides like a machine! He would be better than many of us on that shred coming down Whistler than on our dh bikes. Its not about the bike people. Look at what Tippie and the boys were doing in the early 90's on fully rigids on the north shore. Unreal talent. I agree with Levy's article from the other day. And if you do not watch this video again and be honest with yourself when you ask yourself if you can do simple urban ridin like that that well. Basics.
  • 2 1
Coming from a Kona fan, that bike.... Looks like it's from 01' how bout we bring back the paint job you did on the 09 stinky's, bass's, and stabs. That was my favorite by far!
  • 4 0
I wouldn't pay around £700 for that, I did for my 07 shred but I got maxxis high rollers, mazoochi dirt jumpers and a sick paint job.

flag Bigheadknowall (Nov 29, 2012 at 14:52) (Below Threshold)
'Zaros', you mean your parents wouldn't pay £700 for that. And what, did you, sorry I mean your parents, pay £700 in '07? Surely not later than '07 'cos that is robbery, you should call the fuzz. Whenever you did, though, you were definately royally ripped off, please don't say you've had the same lame bike for the past 4-5 years depending on when you got the old battleship? As for the sick paint job you claim it has, yeah it is sick, looks like John Major, (ask ma or pa, he once was the british prime minister, very boring, had grey hair, only wore grey, spoke in a very boring tone, basically a very grey and boring man) puked all over it. 50 shades of grey it ain't.
  • 5 0
Hey Bigheadknowall! What the hell, you think you know it all? You must have a big head!

See what I did there?

BTW. You sound angry.
  • 2 0
Bigheadknowall: I don't know what you think you might know about anybody on here but i'd advise against ridiculous assumptions like the one's you have made...

I don't know what zaros' stand point is, but I can tell you that in 2007, I was 16. And in 2007 I bought my 07 Stinky. And in 2007 i paid every last penny for that Stinky with money I earned with a JOB (Yes, some of us do get one and mummy and daddy stop buying things). And also I still own and ride that Stinky. Is a 5 year old bike too uncool for you? Does it not do it's job as well because it's not the latest in engineering design and tech? As for the paint job: well that's entirely an opinion and you're entitled to yours. But his (and my...) opinion is that back in 2007, the paint was cool.

So step down from your high horse, grow a pair, and act like you have at least an idea of what maturity is.

Haha, love it, you boys are great. I have bike's from 97-98, so age isn't an issue. my issue is dumb little kids slating stuff when they don't ride much better pieces of kit. I'm not angry.... I'm having a ball lads, don't worry. Thanks haro man 666. by the way the number of the beast is actually 616. Look it up, that's a shame for you now though , isn't it, 'cos now you're not somehow affiliated with radness or badness of the devil because you put '666' in your name. 666 is mis-interpretation of the bible. 616 is the number. Jeez, you little hipster badass wannabes, make me wana puke. Amen.
  • 2 0
You definitely have a Big Head. Enjoy your balls. Hipster badass wanabes. Ha,ha,ha
  • 1 0
Again... Radical assumptions... My reasons for choosing that number were far from the need to come across as "rad and bad". It was actually a suggested alternative when I tried to use the username without the numbers, and it also happens to be pretty easy to remember. I detest that people think that that number is "The number of the beast" and all that shit, cause it just makes me cringe.

Regardless, that's a matter totally irrelevant.
I'm pretty sure zaros' was implying he doesn't feel that this bike is worth that amount of money (An opinion expressed by many others also). He never said it was a bad bike. It was just a comparison of the factory fitted kit that it comes with, with that of 2007. And I have to agree, i'd rather the 07 bike than this one for that price, based on what parts it comes with.
  • 1 0
we have a new protour ladies and gents, default setting: FLAME, regarding the shred... pricing looks a little off?! guess time will tell and they'll only sell next august reduced! out again next year with a spec upgrade or a price downgrade (specialized status being the perfect example?)
  • 31 2
As much as I want to hate it, I think Kona have actually done a pretty reasonable job. They've modernized it a load with the new frame geo, a decent width bar and hydraulic brakes - which should mean it will ride a whole lot better than the old one. Me and my mates all started on bikes like this - DJ frames, tonnes of gears and knobbly ass tires - and we had great fun razzing them around the woods. It's not an expensive bike, so the poor quality suspension fork and budget drivetrain are excused. They could have done a better job of the paint, but as a first mountain bike it looks pretty reasonable to me.
  • 1 0
Same! Still on my carrera though :'(
  • 3 0
730 quid though! i remember when you could pick one up for 350 on an end of year deal...
  • 1 0
Its a bit pricey for the spec but i love the video, reminds me of when i used to ride a hardtail, just wish i'd kept it instead of going full sus in some way, coulda had a really high spec hardtail by now rather than a pretty shite spec full sus, if it was way cheaper it would be a perfect introduction to biking though
  • 14 0
Mmmm manuals make me need to ride.
  • 12 0
Frame looks better, Parts spec seems to be a bit lacking
  • 4 0
I agree! Spinner cargo fork any good?
  • 4 1
I see Spinner forks on CT/WM bikes, Altus shift spec... Crap for $900USD (who knows the CDN price?) in my opinion, go buy a SBC P. Street or.... anything else in the price range for that matter and you'll be happier. Put a half decent rider on any bike and he'll/she'll be able to rip like that.
  • 2 4
I think they should have just gone rigid fork + single speed.

With reduced price tag of course.
  • 2 0
You see Rock Shox and Manitou forks on department store bikes too. It doesn't really mean anything. I took a look at their website and it actually looks like they have some nice products. I'm not saying the fork on this bike is high end by any means, but I'm sure it performs perfectly fine for an entry level rider.
  • 2 0
Entry level riders don't usually spend $900USD on a bike. Worst value bike I've seen in a while.
  • 1 1
Check out my ns suburban. Paid 800 cad for it.
  • 1 0
Kona hardtails were always a rip off. I rode mine for a long time and it was a decent bike but I only got it as an end of line sale. I don't know who they think they're kidding with those specs for that price. Their frames aren't that much better than the competition
  • 1 0
best way to buy a kona hard tail is second hand.
  • 10 0
Have no idea about the bike, but video ir really good, pure pleasure to watch )
  • 9 3
This bike looks like shit, i dont hate kona i actually owned three of them still owning two but this is like shit, come on kona you have al what it takes to build a proper bike, move this ugly paintjob and halfjob alredy done!
  • 8 4
Does the dude rides great? Yes
Does the bike looks great? No
Does the bike has anything to do with dudes riding? No
Will I buy one? No
Has Kona changed their logo? Unfortunately No
Does it look like a 850Euro bike? Hell No
What was my first thought? "Has wallmart bought advertisement campaign in PinkBike"
  • 4 1
I think Kona nailed it with the idea...the idea of having a versatile bike is actually very good. After working in a show where people come in to find a jump bike they can ride anywhere for a good price, its exciting to see a bike that has that capability. However, i think the specs for the price are pretty shitty. Spinner forks are horrible, and the other components aren't so hot as well. I think there is room to improve, but as of now, not doing it for me.
  • 4 0
"What can best be described as half dirt jumper, half trail ripper, and 100 per cent mountain bike" - So you thought the majority of the promotional video should be in a city, nice marketing there Kona.
  • 3 0
the video was great! the rider is amazing and the trail looked quite fun! i am looking in to getting a hardtail and i might just consider buying the frame and speccing it with my own parts as it does look like a good frame. the paint may not be perfect but after all who cares? i dont buy bikes because of how the look, i could care less how they look, because after some good hard riding there will be alot of scratches and scrapes...i buy a bike because it is fun to ride! way to go kona on making an old product better!
  • 2 0
Go steel, you know it makes sense. Tougher, bends rather than snaps, puts a spring in your riding Smile
  • 1 0
i already have a chromo hardtail...i would buy that to ride on the mountain as i ride my transition top on DJ's only. i can attest to the "puts a spring in your riding" though.
  • 3 1
Lol, "fair pricing" cause the parts list on this thing is shit... Entry level bike, I understand that, but let's put at least ONE THING on that bike worth the money, cause the paint is CERTAINLY not going to be the sellin point of this bike in any case.
  • 2 0
I ride a Kona Five-O, which was once marketed as a sort of HT-Freerider. They don't make it anymore, so I guess this bike is now supposed to also cater to the small HT-Freeride crowd. Kona colourways/designs have always been terrible. But not everyone is as passionate about the colour of a bike as people in this thread seem to be ...
  • 2 0
Whenever I get asked, 'which should be my first bike' question. I just tell them to buy used. You can get much better bike for a cheaper price, while supporting a fellow rider rather than giving your money away to some big corporation.

 Europe looks soo rad!

The city is Geneva, Switzerland. Come over, land in Geneva and then trip 60 miles to the alps. 12'000 km of singletrails...
  • 3 0
Love Switzerland! My uncle lives in Zürich and is amazing. Next trip, will take my bike away. Cheer`s!
  • 7 1
this needs a steel frame, chainguide and a better parts spec.
  • 3 0
Remembers me the good old times when I started mtb with friends, we all had kona shred or bikes like this, using it for every kind of things :p
  • 1 0
I owned a fairly heavily upgraded '04 Shred, then acquired and upgraded an '05 Shred which I just sold this year. They are really fun bikes...definitely greater than the sum of their parts. I remember doing urban riding on it...taking it to dirt jumps, and ripping up some fun singletrack on it...embarrasing supposedly better bikes.

I like the upgrades to the geometry in the current version, especially the shorter chainstays, as it wasn't the easiest bike to manual. As for the looks? I think it looks fine...I care more about how fun it is to ride, and this one looks like a fun little firecracker. I think the price is a bit high given the spec, but not outrageously so. Maybe they will offer it as a frame? that would be sweet. I wish they made a sliding dropout conversion...then it really would become a jack of all trades.
  • 3 0
Maybe not the best hardtail but the important thing is we got another hardtail vid, and that seems to be happening more and more recently which can't be a bad thing.
  • 3 0
Built one up in the shop a week or two ago. Didn't feel super sturdy either. Not too bad for the price point though I suppose.
  • 1 0
I liked the utilitarian looks/logos of the Operator/Entourage models.... understated.... and "purpose" looking. If this thing was offered as a frame only.... and it had that look to it... I'd consider it. Otherwise.... I'd drop bigger $ on a new SC Chameleon....
  • 1 0
Well at least the bike has a decent width bar and stubby stem so it can be bullied into corners. Kudos to the hydraulic brakes, but could they have not specced it with a Shimano Deore range kit? 180 front rotor, 2.25 tires, and frame geometry seems spot-on. And I still won't buy a Kona.
  • 1 0
wtf is wrong with all you lot. I have this bike and it is a sexy bike. a lot better looking then the old shred. the old shred looked like the cheap boys bikes u could buy from Tesco direct. the brakes are solid. the wheels r solid. the crank is solid. the ride is sweet and if you convert it to single speed its no heavier then ns bikes. the forks are nice and stiff so they don't come near to bottoming out. notice u don't see any of these for sale second hand? that cause their good bikes what people keep. sounds to me like most of u are sheep. u probably all own a iPhone cause apple is the must have brand. even tho android phones are better in all aspects.
  • 3 0
Yeah, good stuff. I just dont agree with the spinner, what the hell happened to the bombproof dj 3 that never loosened up and could could go without oil for years
  • 3 0
I'm still riding an '03 Sasquatch with a DJ3 that has never been serviced. It has seen Kicking Horse, Fernie, and much more. It's done many miles and survived plenty of punishment. Still going strong today. Yeah, I know, I need a new ride. Coming this spring!
  • 2 0
that must be a hand built high quality frame for the bike to be that much money with those entry level components... oh wait, it's that other thing. It's just another expensive Kona sticker.
  • 3 2
thanks Kona!!! while every other brand is bringing out more and more expensive frames with ever more extreme 'pro' geometry, Kona remembers that very few of ua are actually professional riders and just want to have fun on lot of different trails on our bikes! I have been looking for a hardtail without super twitchy tight dj geometry or high standover 29er xc geometry to replace my dh bike and get back to basics, Kona finally delivers such a frame in short travel format.... pity the component spec is so shite! everything will have to be switched out.
  • 1 0
charge, cotic, kinesis. all produce awesome steel frames with good geo and you can just build up from there!
  • 5 0
Do they actually expect this to be taken seriously with this parts spec?
  • 1 0
I agree that versatility is an excellent cause but it isn't Kona's idea. I mean hasn't the industry been chasing versatility for years? I like Kona's, own a steely that I love, but I expect this is aimed at people who are just starting out, not the guy who rode in the vid. I suspect he could make almost any bike look like fun. Great vid but I'm luke warm on Kona's recent marketing. Keep trying!
  • 3 0
Ditch the front derailleur for a chain guide, get a 20mm axle fork on there (maybe a DJ2 or low-end Argyle), and replace that derailleur with a Zee and then we'll talk.
  • 2 1
Kona need people like you, sane people that don't build a bike up with parts from the bargin bin of life.

fuk looks like a really nice bike. capable for 20 ft drops(for some time) and loads of stuff like that. i would be happy with it for freeriding instead of my 2008 big hit ht, with broken forks (hole in it) which i love a lot. was pist off when kids at the skatepark (bmxers) that was making fun of my big hit. if someone took a shred at crankworx or somethin like tht please let me know. then i maybe buy one

Because most of us hate this new shred and you complimented it. If you we're to burn one live on tv maybe you redeem yourself.

You guys are so out.... don´t you know that ugly is the new cool?

Jokes apart, that color might be a bit dull for nowadays but that´s reminiscent of the oldschool kona color pallette...burgundy?apple metallic green?champagne a.k.a metallic shit color? those colors were odd when came out but now are f...ng classics... I bet this is the same, they even have the ' decals back 93... I personally think components are a bit on the stingy side... but hey...does anyone know the sale price?

Never mind this new shred, the old one's are pretty hanging too. Right 'Zaros'? Talk about trying to polish a f-king great ugly turd.

Oh yeah 'Zaros', you little virgin, if 'everyone' said this bike looked dope, I expect you'd say it was too. Forget the shyte colour and lame parts, the frame looks a lot better than the older shred, that is for sure.

Your pathetic, I don't like the bike or the components, I paid for my own bike out of money I earned working at a bike shop and I don't lick ass I say what I think.

Wow, the little big man says what he thinks...wow, that's a new concept. You, sonny, are going places. YEAH! You tell 'em! He's a no nonsense kinda guy. 'Here he he comes, watch out, we're depending on you...I was like a... CRACK HITLER!!' Yeah I don't like you or your bike...What's up? I'm just like you, saying what I think...BOO-HOO, don't cry baby boy...
