Video: A Process for Smaller, Lighter Riders

Dec 8, 2014 at 10:45
by Kona Bikes

Watch Kona USA shredders Angi Weston and Becca Margulies take to the muddy trails of Bellingham, Washington's Galbraith Mountain on the all-new Process 134SE. Since both smaller and lighter riders have told us they love the low standover of our Process platform, we decided to take it one step further by designing a bike specifically tailored to women, tweens and smaller dudes (under 5'4"). By adding an XS size and tuning the parts kit the all-new Process 134 SE offers category-leading standover (XS fits people under 5'1") on a proven mountain-bike design that can tackle anything the off-road world can throw at it.

So they found out the problem all this years and sort it out with lighter rider.

What about a process for smaller, lighter wallets? :p
  • 13 6
MSRP is $3999! Most bikes on Pinkbike these days are double that. I'd put this up against any of the superbikes out there as far as ride quality goes.

There are lower priced versions of the Process. In order to get this specific bike's weight down for this specific version, the price went up. There is the regular $2800 process 134. And Kona DID make a process for lighter wallets, called the Precept and Precept DL for $1900 of which they said, "(The Precept shares) many of the same angles and ride performance characteristics of our popular Process 134 model. The Precept DL is perhaps the best bang-for-the-buck dual-suspension mountain bike on the market."

So really, Kona has gone out of their way to offer a bike in each wheel size, a bike in each travel category, a bike specifically for shorter riders, as well as a budget version. Pretty awesome.

Aw gawd the whingeing about the price of everything is getting pretty boring, you don't need to buy it

aw gawd, the whingeing about my lighthearted comment Razz

Haha @riftzonexc8,actually despite my comment above I honestly agree with you! I know technology has come a long way, but I bought my 2006 Kona Coiler brand new for $1500 something. It would be pretty hard to buy a bike like that these days with everything seeming to start around $2500. I've looked into buying a new bike and honestly just won't be able to so I just keep throwing parts on my Coiler haha. At the same I appreciate that Kona has come a little closer than other brands to offering a range between "budget" and high end, short and tall etc. But I don't think I'll ever be able to get a brand new "freeride" bike for $1500 like I used to - I mean frames alone are going for more than that now.

Great, now there's gonna be a ton of gnomes clogging the trails. Thanks kona.

Does the SE stands for "SHORT EDITION" ?

The pacing of that video was incredibly awkward... I kept waiting for it to get going, and then it never did. Too much slow-mo.

That wasn't slo-mo, that was two women riding.... Ya ya bring on the neg props....
  • 13 0
Sweet that they've got a bike for shorter shredders.
  • 14 4
How about a bike for non-manlets/females? I don't see anyone catering to the extra tall crowd.
  • 13 8
 29ers....?
  • 11 2
Probably get neg prop'd for this, but a 6'5" friend of mine rides an XL WFO and looks exactly right on it. That thing is f-ing big, but so is he.

Lol, "29ers" what an ignorant comment. Should the bike in this post be on 24" wheels?

Wheel size more about preference than rider height.

The XL Process 111 has a reach of 485mm - that's pretty damn big.

Yeah that is pretty big... mine is 469mm but it's too small. I bet there was never a video made to market either of them to "talls" though.
  • 5 1
exactly Alias530... had to listen to comments that I (tall) needed a 29er for years. Nonsense. All the early 29ers had the same cramped geometry as 26ers and rode even worse. The new generation trail bikes with long front ends are a blessing for tall riders, finally some proper reach with short stems. Very happy with my XL Banshee Spitfire.

You aren't looking very hard... Trek puts out XXL 23" frame sizes in their fs bikes..
  • 1 0
 27.5.. Check Kona website

I'm 6'4 on a process 153XL and it's pretty big. Maybe I'm not the "tall" you're referring to tho

Angie is a great coach and ambassador for women riders, and its great to see women shredding.

 Kona gets it... good job!

Just bought this for my wife. The weight is 28 pounds without pedals as measured by my LBS.

digging this! great company and great trails. wishing that SE was available in my size. kit and price point are on lock!
  • 13 10
How about making a bike specific for the big boned beer and pizza lovers and not the hobbits?
  • 6 3
did anyone else get thrown off by the slow riding and the slow motion? or its just me and slow processing speed of my brain?
  • 3 3
That would be an interesting new bike for my smaller, lighter rider Wink , but they should have spec'ed a different crankset.

The X1 1000 crank means no chainring below 30 teeth. Smaller, lighter riders often need a 28 or a 26 in the alpine.
  • 5 3
How about an XS process 167 so kids can use it as a DH bike?
  • 2 0
Devil Cross is the trail, i think. Obscure cool trail on galby.

 Shred the Gnar Kona!

Does anyone know the weight of this bike? My wife would like this!
  • 1 0
Broncoilover above said 28 lbs with out pedals.
  • 1 0
it sucks tho, i'm 5 10 and inbetween most medium(17) and large(19) bikes
  • 1 0
Same here but with a medium and small! Just makes for mandatory demo rides I think!
  • 1 0
@rzhaaang I'm 5'10" between sizes too and it's a little weird. If you check out a Kona fit chart, at 5'10" we'd actually fall into fitting a small, medium, OR large haha! I was able to test ride a medium Process and it felt pretty good..
  • 2 0
Cry me a river. In between sizes means you have the most options. I'm 6'5" and usually there are very few options, although it's getting better.
  • 2 0
@MmmBones ya you're right haha, like I said I could technically get away on their small medium or large so really we shouldn't be complaining..
  • 1 0
 XS fits people under 5'1"
Ok but on wich track?
  • 2 0
 yay. galby!
  • 2 1
 Now munchkin size!
  • 2 2
 Light bike, heavy price.
  • 1 3
Pretty Lame Video.. Cool Bike, LAME Video

dang that girl with the brown eyes was really cute. You don't see girls like that one the trail very often (or ever)
