Video: Beyond the Bike with Danny Hart

by Lacy Kemp

Danny Hart set the world of downhill alight on the 4th of September 2011, in rain soaked Champery Danny beat the best by 11.699s in a run that has gone more than viral ever since. That run projected the 'Redcar Rocket' to superstardom, but it also shifted his focus and everyone wanted to slice of Hart. What runs deep in Danny is racing and bikes, he can turn his hand to anything with wheels. He looks silky smooth on a BMX and rips turns on a moto faster than a lot of racers, but when he slings his leg over a downhill bike that's when the magic happens and few look more natural. The illusive first World Cup win is by no means beyond him but that one last step on the podium has been out of reach so far. In the fourth episode of Beyond the Bike we find out what goes on behind the door of that camper van and what drives him to race week in, week out.

It'll be a shame if he never finds that top step of a World Cup but I have faith he will!

He will return to his glory.

Basically all he's saying is he writes things down.

I can't help but think he would improve if he had a "been there done it" team-mate to mentor him. The Rat has two of the best riders ever in DH mentoring and pushing him. Look at how the CRC riders have improved with Hill on board.

We've had Palmer back on Intense. Anyone feeling Warner back on Giant??! Big Grin

Exactly and Troy had Sam as a mentor also. Danny pushes really hard on each race run and is one of the most consistent riders out there. In fact I always have a feeling that there is just that little something that's missing. Hopefully for the 2015 season, he will find that little something.

It's only a matter of time for Danny, anyone who says the results aren't there doesn't have a clue about racing. He's really consistent and in my opinion is on the verge of taking home a World Cup. The other thing to remember is that we're watching the glory days of downhill racing with so much raw talent that anyone including Danny can win by the slightest margin.

Exactly, a couple of years ago how many kids were coming up and riding amazingly to an extent that everyone was saying 'he's a future world cup winner' and they all bloody well are, some have even managed that elusive win. The trouble is we only have 6-7 world cups a year, it's so tough up at the top. I can only imagine and only ever will be left imagining, but to me pretty much all top 20 riders are world cup winning material - that's over 3 years of racing if no one ever wins twice!! How much new talent will come in by then!

Loved this glimpse into what goes through the pros minds! It can be a stressful career and I have so much respect for those guys who take it so seriously. I'm sure he still has fun, but it's not by spending ridiculous loads of money getting sloppy on booze in the bars. It's the "grass is always greener" that Danny's got on his mind, but I'm sure he's had loads of amazing memories and experiences because of the serious approach he takes. Keep at it bro cuz you've got so many fans who know there's more to you than one world champs.

We know he's much more than a one trick pony but it must be weird having that one huge win that everyone talks about.
Hope he realises how inspirational the footage of his worlds win is though!
Stay on ya bike Danny!! Couldn't resist ;-)

I hope so too. He could've retired after smashing everyone like that lol. But like I've said before (and got negged for daring to suggest there is pressure in today's dh) he had zero expectations upon him and destroyed everyone. Which immediately catapulted him into 'massive expectation'. I think it's fair to say that normally, the ability to ride with absolute freedom of pressure is reserved for young prodigies.
Personally I think that, given his age, the setting and the lunatic commentators, for my money it's the best all round dh run ever recorded on tape. Just my opinion, but I'd love to watch whatever anyone feels is a good contender to that title.

Neko Mullaly* world champs run for commentator gold & amazing chainless decent.
  • 1 0
Just watched it!... That's incredible. The rest of his category are in big trouble when he gets a chain lol.. Warner and Pagey forever! Someone should create an app with Warner and Pagey soundbites at the touch of a button!
  • 7 0
I cant believe he s on his dh bike only 1 times a week !
  • 3 0
He must be referring to the offseason in UK when its not very nice outside. In the race season he probably is on the bike at least 4 days a week minimum with all the practice runs and stuff going on.

Downhill doesn't get you fit, it's great for the skills, but to compete at that level you can't be riding DH exclusively

i watched the champery run right after this

 It really never gets old.

Danny has so much hart, wish he could put a few together next year.he has the skills and sick style, maybe another team could connect the dots, load cofftrek
  • 13 1
I really doubt the issue with his finishes have been the Giant bike or the team. He excels in poor wet weather that other riders struggle in, you give a track in dry weather Danny will finish well usually within the top 15. You give him slop thats difficult to ride in he will be first.
  • 10 1
Danny is in my opinion one of the most talented riders and he needs a team that can challenge him and build him into the world cup champion that he is
  • 10 3
Yep, give him a sloppy hard track and he'll win. Just like he did in Cairns...
  • 28 0
I think people seem to forget he's only 22 years old... I'd say he's got plenty of time left for developing himself as a rider. To me, that's exciting.

Sloppy hard and cold just like England. Pommes can't handle the heat.

@faceplantfeind Cairns was nowhere near what danny likes. It needs to be steep and technical not have a 30 second pedal at the end
  • 1 0
@faceplantfeind his run in cairns was fire until he caught that root. His problem is consistency not speed, I think this will come with time.

I can't wait to purchase the new Giant Glory!!! Thanks Danny for shredding it, it will give me the confidence I need in my next bike!!!!
  • 3 1
All Danny needs to write down is ride dh everyday, and throw whips everywhere! He will be on the top in no time with this attitude!
  • 2 0
no doubt in my mind, you'll see Danny on the top of more World Cup podiums
