Video: Beyond the Bike Cam Zink

by Lacy Kemp

Fact: There is more to Cameron Zink than meets the eye. Yes, he hits features that leave us slack-jawed. Yes, he’s seemingly unshakable when it comes to fear. And yes, he really is sorry for partying (well, maybe not). But, the man we’ve seen in every memorable freeride or slopestyle highlight video since 2010 is so much more than just another crazy dude on a mountain bike. He’s a father, fiancé, son and brother. He’s a hustler. A business man. An artist. A true renaissance man. Most of all, Cameron Zink is incredibly smart. His evolution from punk kid, to professional athlete while being an entrepreneur has given him a curriculum vitae with serious stout.

I had the pleasure of meeting Cam at Northstar this summer in the parking lot. He was kind enough to sign my 10 year old son's shirt and take a minute to talk with him despite the fact he was already in his vehicle with his friends heading out for the day. A true gentleman and class act. That minute made my son's summer.

I met him about a year ago at the Red Bull Bergline in Germany and he was one of the only riders that took time for his fans during the contest. I took a photo with him and he signed my WTTE Book , adding ,,Cool book , Bro! '' Cam, you are the man.

Legend says he had a custom saddle made to accomodate his balls because they were so big....
  • 19 4
he has to holster them most of the time
  • 11 1
Funny thing is that he's actually reading these comments and laughing while looking at his balls, I would do the same if I were Zink haha.

 @maxram7 Hahahaha best comment! xD

So. I'll be the first to ask. When is YT coming to the states?
  • 17 0
Why the negative prop? Cam rides for YT now and is American. It only makes sense that they would try and push for their bikes to be sold stateside. Great video by the way. Whips and wheelies are great, but its nice to get an inside look at the actual rider.

Can't you order YT bikes online if you are based in the US?
  • 5 0
per the original article on DIRT "Cam’s business sense is rooted in Sensus, but will soon be growing with his involvement in YT Industries as the brand is set to expand its market to North America in early 2015."

^^nope, some patent issue. I wanted one last year...
  • 3 0
I didn't say that it was accurate ;-)
  • 2 0
You can if you have it sent to someones house in Europe, and then have them ship it to you from there. It's costly, but it works.
  • 2 0
@jlhenterprises Could that be the patent that specialized had that is now expired. Hence why you are seeing more horst link bikes pop up from other bike Co. like Transition.

@Rdot84 and @shutter2ride, they put my comment out of place and context, I was replying to @StackingitSince1991 earlier. But I hope you are right cause I still want one
  • 1 0
I think I remember them, saying they were going to bring it to the U.S. in 2015
  • 1 0
Send money to me, I'll order one for ya and ship it to USA Smile

Cam doesn't have to worry about being remembered for pushing the sport, that reputation has already been established
  • 1 0
 He is an absolute legend!
  • 21 0
I can name very few riders that may make freeride mountain biking a better place, keep shredding the limits down Cam!
  • 9 0
I see a few comments from people that want to see more of these pieces. We've done 9 or 10- I can't even remember. Google "Beyond the Bike" and you'll find other episodes with Micayla Gatto, Needles, Hopkins, Danny Hart, Tyler McCaul, McGazza, Casey Brown, and Bearclaw and maybe another that's slipping my mind.

Thanks for all the great feedback. I'm thrilled that you guys like the series!

Good job on these edits Lacy! If ever there is time and funding for more, there are a few I would be keen on seeing:
Nico
ACC
And the one I would really like…Fabien! That guy is the epitome of class, plus returning from injury and winning and of course all of his previous years on the WC. Could be captivating…
  • 1 0
I think Fabien has been covered pretty extensively, but I would agree that ACC would be amazing. There are so many riders Jasper and I would love to do these stories with. So many.

Huge fan of these Beyond the Bike videos, especially this one. Love the documentary style with more than just riding. This video gives you a great sense of what he is all about. Keep up the great work and hopefully there are more riders to come!

Besides being known as just a legend mountain biker. I really admire his ability to pull himself together and overcome life obatacles and get everything together for his future. True success is overcoming adversities. I enjoy hearing these kinds of stories.

I"m not gay, but I have to say, I love him !
  • 5 2
This is REALLY rad! I never knew Cam was into cadd design and those sorts of thing, it really makes you appreciate what talent this guy has. There are sooo many people out there who don't get this kind of video made about them, that aren't winning any big events, that don't get this kind of recognition. People who also share a similarly amazing attitude, and philosophy on life, who may never have had the chance to make it big, but are still fucking awesome people! I personally want to see more video's of these sorts!
  • 9 9
God! Your speech inspired me! I just decided to create my own video resume and show the world my "amazing attitude, and philosophy on life".

you are my hero DrJean! you're so amazing!
  • 8 1
I just wanna make the world a better place... that's all.
  • 2 1
 What did I just watch?
  • 5 0
DrJean - I am amused, to be honest the riding part was starting to deteriorate the whole vid by the end, as you talked of steeps and the camera didn't really caught it, but then you went with road riding "I like to show off a bit" with David Beckham uniform and saved it hahahah.

I love the series, great work Lacy, it takes a skill to ask the right questions to get so honest answers without overdoing it. You somehow manage to keep it quite authentic insterad of being pompatuos, transcendtal bullcrap. It would be cool to see one like that with Gee Atherton. Bloke gets too much short sighted hate and videos like behind the bike show very well how deep personality is. If you judge a man by the distorted surface, often a made mask, persona shown in press releases or recaps from world cups or competitions, you are just proving your ignorance.
  • 1 0
Yep. Gee would be really interesting for sure.

My guess is now that he has a little girl that depends on him, and needs him he will be moving on to some of the more tamer genres of mountain biking. Being a Father does and should take priority over any thing else you can ever do in life!
  • 22 0
His kid was born like a year ago or something and he is doing 360's off cliffs and did a 103 ft backflip. So i doubt he will be slowing down anytime soon, which is wut he said in an interview after the record backflip.
  • 2 0
I don't see him retiring to enduro anytime soon:P
  • 2 0
But what about that sick Cadillac?
And when's the beer come out?

I'll agree a stand up dude, watched him take tons of time to chat with some kids at whistler in between his slope style runs. You could tell it made their week.

Great video. Especially cool to see him as a dad and his perspective on fatherhood. There is nothing else like it, no other feeling in the world compares. My son started doing a little BMX racing this year; he won the main for U5. I nearly lost it seeing him there holding that trophy. Made 'ol pops proud to see him grinning from ear to ear.

I knew nothing about Zink before watching "Where the Trail Ends". Was really impressed with his attitude when his bike and baggage didn't arrive in Nepal and he had to hike for 5 days in Vans and the same clothes. The guy was nothing but positive when he could have been complaining (most would if they were in the same situation). The more I see and learn about the guy, the more he impresses me.

What an awesome insight into the legend that is Cam Zink. Didn't think I could admire him more than I did ten minutes ago, but that pretty much blew me away.
  • 1 0
I gained massive respect for him watching that! I agree i'd like to see a vid with Gee, Brendog too, I've watched a couple of these edits now and they are pretty sweet, nice1 Lacy. I have a lot of time for Cam and Sensus on a whole now as I have spoken with cams bro through Sensus and they are an awesome company to deal with, and seem very home grown and still remember to have time for the fans.

Zink is one of the coolest people I have ever met in my life. Such a down to earth guy. Can't wait to see the kid slaying it in a few years!!!!!! Yeah Zink buddy!!
  • 1 0
The resume/marketing part was super cool to hear about... Hopefully zink keeps that potential and motivation inside of the mtb industry. Would be awesome to see him in the future of our sport in that type of way

Maybe Cam can sign the bruised ribs that I got at Northstar! haha Awesome video - I would love to see more of these personality pieces, so many great athletes.
