NS Bikes just released the first public photos of their prototype downhill bike! They've been working on this exciting new project for the past year or so and here's what they had to say about it. Let's just say that WE TOO are extremely excited about this! We want to know what you guys think about it!

''NS Bikes is pleased to announce a recent signing of Hubert Posmyk from Gravity Group as our first DH rider. Here is the official press release.

Hubert Posmyk, 21 years old from Poland, is an exceptional character and amazing style rider who managed to finish 4th during 2012 National Championships as well as achieved some top results on the national level in 2012 despite very little support. It was only a matter of time until his real potential would be noticed.

NS Bikes, a world renowned manufacturer with a strong background in dirt jumping and freeride decided to enter the DH scene, and has been working for over a year on their new downhill bike. It was obviously for the company’s management that it needed a reliable rider able to provide useful feedback for bike development on one side and to secure high level exposure on another side. Hubert was the perfect candidate for the job and an obvious choice for the company.

Hubert will ride on the prototype version of the frame for now and develop it through time with the NS Bikes R&D department.

Here is what Hubert Posmyk says about this new partnership: “Working with NS Bikes in 2013 makes me very happy and motivated to achieve the best possible results. I am also excited to be a part of the R&D team. I am sure we will all give our best to develop an NS Bikes downhill frame that will be able to compete for the highest results which is what I hope to be able to prove this season.”

Szymon Kobylinski, the owner of NS Bikes, commented: “Many people may not know that when we started our company over 10 years ago I was totaly into DH racing, so having a real DH bike come to life today is a very special moment for me. The whole design team has been very passionate about this project and now with Hubert on board, I'm conviced that we will deliver a world class product next year. As with all our products, we are aiming to provide the best race-day performance combined with everyday usability and reliability.”

Look at the pivot between the seat strut and the chainstay ahead of and below the rear axle area of the dropout. That's called a horst-link. It was designed by this guy named Nicolai while he was employed by Amp Research in the early 90s, filed for a US patent by Horst Leitner (owner of Amp Research) and became known in the bike industry as the horst-link as a result. Any 4-bar bikes employing horst link dropouts had to have a license from the patent holder to sell their bikes in the USA or they'd be sued. In/around 1998 Horst Leitner sold two of his patents to Specialized bikes, including the horst-link patent, who licensed it to certain brands (KHS for example was one) but denied it to many others (GT for example). That's why many brands available in Europe or Canada, did not sell the same full suspension bikes they offered outside the USA, to customers inside the USA. They either couldn't get a license, or didn't want to pay the royalties for the patent that Specialized wanted. With the patent expired, anyone can now sell horst-link bikes in the USA.
