Building bikes is all fun and games and may sound like an easy thing to do, but does everyone really know how much works goes into building a bike? Here at Oneplanet Adventure I had the opportunity to follow bike mechanic Rhys Evans as he builds up this brand spanking new V10 Carbon, and in what better way to show that build than with a timelapse.
Ah you are right sir. I didn't blink but I actually did look away for a lil bit. Got interrupted and caught the very last bit right before he took it off and the pedals are in line with the crank arm and didn't look like they were there. hah oops. whatever still a good video.
Wait, it took that much time to COMMENT the VID? That much Talking back and forth to (doing who knows what). Come on man, an experienced NERD can have the COMMENT WRITTEN, and POSTED in less than 30 min, and have the POST tuned to the VID'S style in another 30-60 min. Just seems like this was a lot of pussyTALKING around just to make a COMMENT. IMO if you can't POST a top end COMMENT in less than an hour (at most an hour and a half), then something is majorly wrong with your MARBLES. None of this lunchtime stuff. I guess it's cool for the NEG PROPS, but man, multiple TIMES REPEATING it, plus lunch, come on now. I guess this is why NERD TROLLS are paid pretty low wages comparing to the rest of the world's jobs. COMMENTED... done... next.
I did a literally pro grade COMMENT on my lahar in an hour, and had it tuned exactly how I wanted it in that timeframe, and that wasn't some generlically made v10, it was a one off, custom made COMMENT.
I liked it. I orginally thought it was going to be more simple - i.e. one aspect of the build, which would have been good, anyway, but I am glad it had more.
The hacksaw going through the steerer tube was my favourite bit, followed by lunch. Which it was.
rfffr: I work in a Bike shop I would love to see you build a brand new bike in less then a hour first off every parts is in packages every tool has its own place as you need a tool you put the one you were using away or your work space gets all messed up you need to have every part on the bike right you need to center things like stem/bars seat crank if its outbored chain guide you are always taking off packing gresse on parts like chain witch also needs sized to work right you need to cut stuff like bars and fork find the right headset stack combo I think you need to also count for doing a good job on a build if you can build a brand new bike in less then two hours with all new parts from frame up you need to be the first one to ride it and I hope it's down a hill
1. Your not making any friends here due to your negative comments slagging off others work. 2. If you can build a bike in around 30 mins from scratch then i reckon you should make a video and send it to Guiness book of world records.
Until then just grow up and have a little think before you make yourself look a little bit stupid.
The v10 looks mint, very nice component selection too, nice job.
When I see such movies, the whole work at the workshop in States or close to, I want to take my stash and move away and start a new life, new job as a mechanic, hone my skills and be very close to the latest in MTB. Hate to eat the seconds here.
I was up at Coed Llandegla when they were building the wheels for this beauty with those Chris King hubs, sexy! nice work chaps wicked video, and the cafe is that good!
Pretty sweet. I like the part where he puts the chainring on the wrong side of the crank at first and then it's magically on the correct side a second later. I do stuff like that a lot, but I guess this makes it okay...
Wait, it took that much time to build the bike? That much walking back and forth to (doing who knows what). Come on man, an experienced mechanic can have the bike built, and riding in less than 30 min, and have the bike tuned to the riders weight and style in another 30-60 min. Just seems like this was a lot of pussyfooting around just to make a video. Even the pinkbike troll can do stuff faster (for those of you who know who he is. He works for the Whistler resort as a head mechanic).
i think you should take it easy, it's just a well edited video that also shows how does this onplanet thing work with riders being able to eat or read a mag after their ride:P
Since when does a build have to do with riding. You get it done. Then go ride. If your working for a shop and can't get shit out quick, that's laziness.
And some people enjoying taking time to build something jim? Seriously, enjoying building a bit because it's a specific type of bike. It's a bike. Put it together, get it rideable, end of story. The v10 IMO isn't anything beautiful. It's a production bike, plain and simple.
Nothing about taking it easy. It was an opinion. I just think if your a mechanic, you shouldn't be taking lunch breaks mid build, and doing dozens of other things while the bike is being built. I'd expect this kind of vid for a prototype fab vid, but just an assembly... come on.
rffr, what is your problem? you can build a bike fast? great, go start a competition of timed assembling or something. this vid is enjoyable in every way and it is not supposed to show super-speed.
so unless you want to say something constructive, STFU and come back when you are more positive.
@rffr - saying a Santa Cruz V10 carbon isn't anything special because it's a 'production' bike is like saying there's nothing special about a Bentley or Maybach or Ferrari etc. I've seen backyard hotrods that look and run like shit and they're 'one off customs'
rffrr, some people respect and admire the quality of the parts and the Engineering that goes into a bike, hence taking your time to build it to take in the sheer amount of design, testing and production to get the bike to a stage when it can just be pieced together
rffr guy is really harsh, he must have gold teeth or his eyes are brown. Now for my self, it takes me quite sometime to build a bike maybe a day or two.
@rffr If the guy want to spend 2 hours building his bike it's none of your business! You are paying his wager? I guess not. Some people like to "feel" the build. Obviously he was taking easy while doing the video! Do you think it would be better have a 30 seconds video with a ultra-fast-sloppy build? Come on... stop trolling!
Has it occurred to you that he perhaps built the bike around other jobs? And maybe the lunch thing was for artistic effect? Maybe they did the whole build in one hour and then had lunch and just edited it to look like it was a break mid build. When you saw the mechanic segment in Life Cycles, did you think "bloody hell, forks serviced, wheels trued, drive train serviced in 5 mins? He must be some kind of super human being!"
That was a fantastic and highly creative video. I have nothing but praise.
Troll calling the kettle black. Obviously if you did a time lapse of a 1-hour bike build, you would have a very short, uninteresting, piece of garbage video (I'm glad you're not a film maker). This was an awesome video and props to One Planet Adventure for letting me chill out on my lunch break if only for a moment!
LOL at all the people calling me a troll. it's an opinion. If you want to state your opinion, do it so below, instead of call me a troll. And Artistic effect.... really?
Like said, this is what I thought. Man you guys seem to have such a hard on protecting people you don't even know. If you don't like my comment, ignore it.
Troll wise, people who reply to my comments are the trolls. I just put my opinion down. I wasn't replying to anyone else trying to provoke them.
And who said 30 seconds pelleg. It shouldn't take 2+ hours to build a bike. It should take about 30 min with much care put in, and that's it. If he really wants to dial stuff in, he'd be re-reaming everything etc, which then an hour would make sense.
O and Michael, it's not a special bike. It's not hand made. It's not made by someone locally. It's a mass produced, Taiwanese piece of sweat shop labor. Lahar, BCD are 2 100% handmade (not produced in Asia) carbon bikes, and Intense, Foes, Older Tomacs, Yeti's etc are truly handmade locally bikes. IMO these are "special bikes" These aren't Taiwanese mass produced bikes. Anyone can send a spec to a sweatshop company in Taiwan to have something made, but it takes a special company, with special people to make something truly considered more than a bike. Any by sweatshop, I mean a company that pays their people less than 5$ a day work wise. IE, ALL THE COMPANIES IN TAIWAN WHO MAKE BIKES. Simply put. There is no 8-50$hr pay over there. Why on earth do you think the carbon bikes, which takes much more time, and skill cost the same as the hand made locally aluminum bikes?
i love fiddling, assembling and disassembling, know how it works, do it paciently, enjoying it, i couldnt do a full build, shure as hell i'm not a bike mechanic, i just like my bike to work when i'm riding it and know whats happening, what's wrong in taking a bit more time to fuly apreciate one of the important aspect of our sport?

Its nice to see things so close to home.
Shame he didn't go for a spin around the car park at the end tho.

Sweet video

Let's not feed him eh?
Thanks for the Vid, not what I expected. Was pleasantly surprised.
