Cam Cole Retires from International Racing

In a statement released earlier today on his website, he has announced his decision to retire from World Cup racing to focus on studying full time:

Cam Cole contemplating how many more runs to take for the day. I know the track now but if the weather keeps up it will just keep changing. Not sure I want to be wet all day only to have to learn new lines tomorrow.

Well it has been a bit quiet on the news front for me. It is that time of the year when deals for the coming 2015/2016 seasons have been finalised and the public is waiting and speculating as companies endeavour to build anticipation prior to releasing team details.

I have some news about my future as a professional athlete on the world cup circuit. I will not be riding for a world cup team next year or racing world cups. At 26 years old, for now I have made a decision and I am committing to a career after racing. It was a decision that I was prepared to make when I realised my situation. Moving into the 2015 season my main goal was to find a team that had good bikes and products and I was committed and believed I would be back on the podium this coming season. However, after many emails and conversations I found there were no vacancies on any of the top teams for the coming season. After having raced for some of the best teams during my career you begin to understand that the systems and processes that these top teams have in place, and the finer details that receive attention, all really put riders in the best position to make the most of their talent and the hard training undertaken in the off season. I have loved racing at the highest level, along with the ups and downs that come with the risk taking that is required to be at the top. I love to push myself to the limit, which you may have all noticed, I am sure that this will carry me through this next stage in my life.

I love biking and racing too much to stop, so I’ll be at local and national events moving forward and who knows about World Champs. I have partnered with one of New Zealand’s leading bike brands and there will be some news about this in the coming weeks. Otherwise I’ll be fulltime at the University of Canterbury and I’m looking forward to the challenges that studying will offer.

I have to thank a few people who helped me out in many ways during my time racing overseas. Starting at the beginning with Lahar and Aaron Frankiln who took a risk with me as an underdog to win the junior world champs title in 2006. Winning world champs as a junior kicked things off for me, and since then I have learnt a lot about being an athlete and getting to the top in my sport. I have enjoyed many good times along the way and have to thank Mum, Dad and my family, Reece Mcleod, Lester Perry, Aaron Fernandez, Skinner, Baron, Mavis, Gary Wolf, Christopher Warrick, Hulen King, John Kirkaldie, Mark “Fitzy” Fitsimmons, Nathan Rankin, Jason Marsh, Hamish Ferguson, Katherine Prumm, Justin Leov, Simsy and Red-Dog, Bass Man, Dodzy, Sabrina Jonnier, Luke Strobel and his family, Peter Valance, Andy Ward, Rob Warner, Chris Kilmurray, Matt Clarke, John Oldale, Laurent Delorme, Jack Roure, Loic Bruni, Sam Blenkinsop, Thibaut Ruffin and the whole Ruffin Family (I really enjoyed 2014 with you all) and my wife, Amy. Plus everyone else who has made racing overseas such an experience, I know I’ll have missed some of you, cheers.

Once a racer always a racer, but ultimately you gotta follow your heart and take care of the bills. Best of luck!

 @Cam Cole

best of luck with your future.

It takes a wise (and honest) man to know when to change direction, there is a whole world outside of racing bikes, and I hope you enjoy riding bikes and doing some occasional races for pure enjoyment

I've got a lot of respect for cam Cole and his hilarious dry witty interviews. Good luck in the future. You'll be laughing all the way to the bank at 40.

Indeed!!!!! Like music, mountain biking is like " food for the soul," I know that it is not an easy decision especially with someone of your standing in the mountain biking community, albeit being young and at the top of your game.

It really takes a special breed of man to step down from the pursuit of more podiums and refocus himself towards a more important priority in life. My respect to you Cam.

Pinkbike Kickstarter to fund his racing season....? Rider entirely funded by the Pinkbike community, could be pretty cool!

Man is never too old to learn something new, especially if that new knowledge creates wealth!

I'm surprised and a bit sad upon reading this. I hope this is a Mick Hannah-style retirement, and we see you back in a year, bigger, badder and faster than ever!

When you think about it, its not the most surprising but I think you're right. Maybe he'll be back in a season or two and if not, I can bet we will still see some awesome bike porn.

Like Warner said: "this man has had more comebacks than Rocky!"

2nd place at fort bill WC wasn't he - and arguably but for a whip on the Nissan jump might've sneaked the win

What you have learned racing at the world's top level, doing well, and having success, can't be taught in University. Real world experience is invaluable. You are very well positioned for continued success. You will continue to be an inspiration for young racers.

I'm sure you're right, he obviously hasn't thought this through at all, and upon seeing your comment, he will of course agree with you and change his mind. Oh wait...

And the award for totally failing to read/comprehend the comment before posting a shitty response goes to.....well, pretty much everyone on the internet actually.

Whenever I think of Cam Cole I think of Fort Bill 2010 (?) when he lost out on the win to Gee by fractions of a second. He did a MASSIVE whip off the arch jump which surely cost him the race win, but that whip was far more memorable.

Good luck in the future.

That's our boy! Always the professional - worked so hard and took the racing serious. Cam really put NZ MTB downhill on the map after winning the Junior World Champs in 2006 and gained tons of respect all around the world. We are so proud of him and will miss the middle of the night watches of WC races and Rob Warner's greetings.

I hope somebody steps up to get Cam out to France for World Champs. Just get him out there for that one race!

So he will be riding for Zerode im guessing during the nation series??? my guess that could still be awsome for him to be on a home grown bike
  • 2 0
" A leading NZ bike brand" I don't know of any others than Zerode!

I like to believe that the best racers do eventually find their way to the top teams but I do wonder if some potential top guys slip through the cracks. Cam seemed on the cusp so while its a bummer to see him go, he seems pretty ok with it. Good on ya!

Cam - just want to add my support and congratulations on moving into your life's next chapter. You'll no-doubt get a great deal more out of your tertiary education, having had time to appreciate it's value, so good luck with that! I still remember that Crankworx way back when you and Strobel barely had a Looney between you and I squared you guys away with lift tickets for a day so you could shred. Good times! Schralp-on!

Good luck bro. Catch ya later!

Props Cam. Spoke with you for a bit at Windham in your pit. Fully support this decision. You can ride and race the rest of your life. Who cares at what level, it's still racing. Crush school!
