After having an epic qualification run in the Urban Downhill event in Taxco, Mexico, things took a turn for the worse for downhill racer, Marcelo Gutierrez. A slippery corner sent the pro rider straight into the ground in one of the fastest sections of the track, and he took a direct hit to the head. Fortunately enough Marcelo was able to walk away from this one, only with a small but serious injury to one of his fingers on his right hand.
It was the last race of the season and it was supposed to be one of the most exciting urban races of all: The Urban Downhill in Taxco, Mexico. After a season in Europe, it is really great to be running back in Mexico again, a Spanish speaking country. The public in Mexico is so warm and create a totally different atmosphere from Europe; you can really share the world of Downhill with the crowd. Unfortunately in the qualifying round I had a bad crash.
After lots of training I felt ready for classification and wanted to push a little harder to measure the speed (the track was only finished on the day of the race). So it was a big shock to fall and it didn’t look good! I was initially pretty stunned because it was a direct blow to the head against a wall/concrete staircase. I did not have a serious injury but a phalanx of my right hand took the impact and I have no clue how it’s going to turn out. In any case, I couldn't compete further; I was taken directly to the clinic.
Taxco was the closing chapter for me in terms of international competitions. I have to thank you all for the support during 2014. They have all been a great motivation. My sponsors Giant, Redbull, Universidad de Manizales, TLG, Herragro and Moveo that are allowing me to compete in all these races - A big THANK YOU!
