Whistler s Alpine Back In Action - Top of the World 2014

Posing in the alpine - behind is the Curtain Glacier

On July the 12th, Whistler's Top of the World trail opened again to the relief of those who've been trying to figure out a way to escape being parboiled in the mid 30 degrees (90 or so in freedom units) heat of the valley trails. This heat's had the effect of melting out snowpack in record time. The trail is in great shape and even gets dusty as you get lower.

Top of the World is an alpine trail starting from Whistler's peak and descending 347m to the trails of the Garbanzo Zone in 5 distinct segments. It's now possible to get a one ride ticket from Guest Services for the price of $ 32 if you don't have a Whistler Bike park pass. If you already are a pass holder or have some sort of day ticket then the Peak Ride ticket which allows you to access TOTW's alpine goodness is $17. From July 11 to September 21, you can top off your WBP experience by venturing into the alpine to smell the flowers and try out a new experience.

WBP's trail crew has done a lot of work on the lower section of TOTW. 23 culverts funnel water off the trail surface improving drainage. It's a stunning amount of work which will no doubt be appreciated by laundromats everywhere.

Subalpine berms

I close with this plagiarism from a previous article:

"Top of the World can be best thought of as an experience and not just merely a trail. If you're a rider who doesn't care much for externalities such as alpine views (not judging - just making a statement) and are motivated solely by the experience of riding a bike, fast, then the Top of the World's point will probably be lost on you.... If all you really want to do is smash some berms brah... well then, as I said, lower trails are in great shape and the dirt is as tacky as I've ever seen it. That's the beauty of the Whistler experience - there is and will always be something for everyone."

Ontario may not have the mountains and the riding as they do out west, but I don't know how someone can leave the great lakes and Georgian bay. If you have a car, there is many places to ride in Quebec and New Hampshire that don't cost you an arm and a leg and are extremely underrated. Mind you, if you live in Toronto its probably time to uproot.

you just said it... "Ontario may not have the mountains and the riding as they do out west". /end of thread. We have lakes and oceans as well.

Clearly you haven't explored the sea to sky. Pricey yes, but small compared to how amazing this area is. Could never imagine living in ontario again, not to mention living near pretty little to no elevation.

I had two friends take me on this during my first trip to Crankworx. I was relatively new to mountain biking, and did it on a 6 inch transition gran mal with a coil that was for a 300lb guy so it almost felt like I was on a hardtail. I got down fine, albeit my hands were extremely sore from being over the bars too much (I was a newb). It was a great experience though and I want to do it again next month, some spectacular views. Bring a camelback! Big shout outs to the Whistler crew for even making something as amazing as this possible.

Every enduro rider would like to ride that track in a life ! Such creative building these guys must have had full motivation to begin building there... It LOOKS like its just about removing rocks ... But nô !

Is this trail limited to the enjoyment of enduro riders? We're call mountain bikers bro!!
  • 8 2
People need to stop get their panties in a bunch over the word enduro. Is it a bit more pedally and tight than a typical DH track? Enduro seems like as good of a word as any for that style of trail.

 I'll enduro your mom!

@Ejbluth - haha, you don't wanna to that.....
I ride an Enduro (Specialized) does that mean I'm a Enduro Rider?? I'm sooo confused..........

I rode the TOTW in 2012 on a Demo - I would have preferred a 6inch - more agile and light.....
