Riding With The Hope Tech Crew

Designed, tested, manufactured… keeping it local.

The UK based Hope Technology are now in their 25th year of making high quality bike components. Co-owners Ian Weatherill and Simon Sharp were both high level motor-bike trials riders whilst also working as engineers at Rolls Royce. They wanted brakes for their mountain bikes to match the performance of the discs on their trials bikes…so they made some. Hope just sort of flowed from there as the pair started making other bike parts and the demand for the products grew. That idea of riders making components for riders is still strong within the company today.

Based on the foot of the Yorkshire Dales and the Lake District, Hope are provided with some of the best riding terrain in the UK. Factory riders Sam Flanagan and Rachael Walker were joined by local boy Joe Flanagan as we spent a couple of days checking out Hope’s local “testing ground”. Sam and Rachael picked the riding spots for the few days I joined them. Choosing to keep the trails natural, Sam took us around the Borrowdale Bash in the Lake District – the views definitely didn't disappoint. On the second day, Rachael took us a little more local to Hope as we headed up into Ingleton in the Yorkshire Dales.

Lakes' epics are no trail centre - big climb ups are rewarded with even bigger ride downs - Rach, Joe and Sam work their way up the first climb of many climbs round the Borrowdale Bash route

Could be hard to get back to after a big night out in Keswick town! Just one of the many elaborate houses around the lakes. The house on Derwentwater is owned by the National Trust and is open to the public only 5 days of the year.

As anyone who spends a lot of time in the hills will tell you the weather in these parts is really unpredictable. Therefore packing wisely is essential. Signs of sometimes relentless wind and rain are visible everywhere.

There is nothing like pushing your limits down a decent you don't really know that well. Keeps your riding sharp, but can bite with the first loss of concentration

Unfortunately, that's exactly what happened to Rachael... Damn, shin digs are painful...

It can't be classed as a Lakes' epic, if you haven't had to carry the bike at least once!

Everything from polished, slippy limestone to grippy when-it-wants-to-be slate, can be found on those trails. Just make sure you have a spare tube with you!

The Flanagan brothers will be tackling the 2014 Enduro World Series, while Rachael Walker is focusing on the UCI Downhill World Cups, this year.

This motto sums up what Hope is all about. Hope have got a wealth of riders within the company to test the components, but they use their Factory riders to get feedback on the latest parts. I couldn't help notice a few 3D printed parts on the bikes - take a look at Rachael’s chain device. Sam was also testing a 35mm stem, which Hope are now planning to release in the next few months.

Another team running the Yeti SB66 and killing it. Yeti says it is not producing anymore of these bikes because there is no demand for them in the USA. What is wrong with this picture? The pros love it. the testers love it. But oddly enough people don't want to buy it because of the wrong wheel size. Strange!! Too much worrying about what wheel size a bike is and not how it performs.

Did the Borrowdale Bash yesterday, including all the cheeky bits, got lucky with the weather, wall to wall sunshine! Would also recommend a carry up Skiddaw just wish I had the skills to clear the descent down to Longsight Edge, Ullock Pike Descent is very special, one of the best in the Lakes! They got lucky with Ingleborough, if you can't see Ingleborough from my office window then it is raining, if can see Ingleborough then it isn't raining - yet! Smile

Nice photos!

The Lakes is an awesome place to ride, just a shame that we are not allowed to ride any of the singletrack pictured because it is footpath and not bridleway. Thankfully their is a Borrowdale Bash that is as equally as good and all on bridleway.

I was thinking the opposite - some good tips for cheeky trails there if you know Borrowdale Smile

riding on footpaths is fine as long as you're careful and curteous
  • 3 0
Care and courtesy are required just as much on bridleways or any shared use trail! (And on bike specific trails too, though you shouldn't have to excuse yourself for high speed shredding on those). Riding on footpaths is alas not legal without permission of the landowner. That doesn't make you bad for doing it, it makes the law an ass, but keep being careful and courteous and one day we might get that changed.

Absolutely, I ride footpaths all the time in north wales, and the only time anyone has ever had a problem with it, I was on a green lane anyway, so I had every right to be there in the first place. A smile goes a long way Wink

 Believe me, there are many.

It is a real shame that Hope Tech felt they are above the law and took to illegal footpaths to get these photos. Access for mountain bikers in the lakes is tough enough as it is without this sort of blatant disregard. I really hope that they put right their wrong and make a sizeable donation to Fix the Fells. Please don't go and ride the footpath, there really is plenty of excellent Mountain Biking to be had in the Lake District without resorting to Footpaths. Please Hope, use this as a way to apologise and show us how responsible Mountain Bikers can be.
