Discoveries are happening all the time... Some things, which we take for granted, have been discovered by a total accident. Some of those are serious, some are silly and useless, when others sneak into our daily lives in order to benefit us without our appreciation or acknowledgement.
From the Big Bang theory, radioactivity and penicillin, through to microwaves, Teflon and vulcanized rubber, Coca-Cola, the Slinky, corn flakes and potato chips - all these things are creations of an accidental event in somebody's life.
I had a chance to experience this kind of situation when I went to Vienna for the Air King event a couple weeks ago... So, what is my own, accidental discovery?
Events are quite stressful times for anyone in the media crew and every second, jump and trick counts and can turn out to be gold, so no opportunity is worth missing. Taking photos with a
70-200mm lens, naturally you’d expect shots to be taken further away... And that's what I was always doing, until that cloudy, Saturday morning in Vienna. I was standing right next to the last jump where many riders did their best tricks. I began getting frustrated that I was missing so many opportunities to get a good shot... Then, unconsciously, I followed with the camera one of the riders flying over my head and I took a snap-shot.
At first, when I looked at the preview screen on my camera, I immediately thought to myself how stupid it was to shoot this way. However, I didn't give up that quickly, I kept trying. Then, exactly on the fourth attempt, Thomas Genon glided over me and I managed to get a clear shot. It was all of a sudden evident that these shots were actually really exciting!
Of course, I can't and don't want to compare myself to such a big discoveries as mentioned above. But on personal level, it felt incredible to go accidentally stumble upon this!
Anyways, it is definitely nothing ground-breaking in photography in general, as similar photos have already been taken in MTB, but yet again, I am pretty happy with the outcome and I hope you enjoy them as much as I do.
I'd rather wear shorts that have by boxers or 6" of arse crack hanging out.
Whos girly now?
Awesome photos BTW!
As much as i think we have great aspects of culture with bikes, skatebaording etc todays culture definately lacks real culture, knowledge and philosophy. On that note you could also say nothing is accidental, for that to happen it all ready had to be a quantified option that existed in our universe.
One of the best ways to become a better photographer is to change your perspective (shot location). Shot #1 and #3 are great examples.
