The Mammoth Mountain Bike Park is set to open off the top this Saturday. The Gondola will spin first thing Saturday morning, providing access to a number of new trails, including the iconic Kamikaze, Off the Top, Velocity, Chain Smoke, Twilight Zone and Beach Cruiser. In total there are now more than 20 trails open, with more coming each week.

Mammoth's iconic Kamikaze run will be open this weekend for the first time this year. It's like riding a terrifyingly fast piece of mountain biking history and also serves as the venue for one of the main events at the Kamikaze Bike Games (Sept. 18-21)

If you're looking for a gentler path down the mountain to get started, Big Ring trail, pictured here, is a great way to see the mountain and get your wheels under you

Lower Twilight Zone, a favourite of many Mammoth riders is primed and ready to go. The jump lines are looking primo.

Another of the classic Mammoth Trails, Bullet Downhill will be open this weekend. It first opened in 2001 to challenge riders for the Grundig World Cup. It features big hits, bigger drops and the rock garden, one of the most technical sections of in-bounds bike park terrain anywhere.

Manzanita offers some of the best view of the Sherwin's on the mountain. The combination of the words "fast" and "flowy" may well have started here.

The Discovery Zone, part of Mammoth Mountain's arc of progression, will open next weekend on June 20. Current trail updates are available on the Mammoth Mountain Bike Park website at www.mammothmountain.com

Rode it Saturday. Did one high speed lap off the top to kamikaze for the view. Then several laps velocity to twlight zone and a short hike to pipeline into shotgun. Lots of residual moisture from snowmelt. Thanks to the trail crew for getting it open early! And yes there is still enough snow to ski in several places. It's Mammoth!

Seriously, isn't Mammoth located in California? They should have been fully open in January.

quesadilla34- OK, so they should have been open at the very latest in mid-February...

You'd figure at least a person from Cali would get what I'm saying. Oh well, I guess not everyone is in tune with the historic/disastrous dry spell their own state is having Smile

Yes, made fun off of a tragedy. Go to hell, I'll see you there.

It was covered in snow 3 weeks ago....

Bahhhhhh someone from Cali..... That's the beauty of the state! Deep pow all winter in the sierras.... and amazing riding year round within a couple hours!

 ^^^^ i get ya. Sometimes it's a tough crowd.

No, we get it. It just wasn't relevant Wink

Here's the deal. Total snowfall on Mammoth Mountain (measured at mid-mountain) was just under 20 feet this season. It snowed over 4 feet in April/May, and the ski area was open until Memorial Day weekend. Compared to 2010/2011 (55+ feet) that is not a great year, but it's still a crap load of snow. So I guess why no one from Cali is cracking up at the drought sarcasm (and yeah we do get it), is that the mountain was covered with snow (and skiers) for the last 7 months and there is still snow on a lot of trails for the crews to remove. I guess you should have been there in January to understand how whacky it sounds to say they should have been open for biking.

mammoth- You get that I was joking around and yet you still felt compelled to explain the snowfall totals and to point out what I said was inaccurate even though I was not being serious at all? Seems about as legit as getting defensive about something so obvious that you can see snow-covered peaks in the pictures about Mammoth opening up early Wink

Well about as much snow as they could get for having an average temp. of 98 degrees during the winter...

 now THAT. is funny

 just.... stop... talking....

Scott-towns, cuban-b pretty much hit the nail on the head, the wasnt any implicit relevance, so no one cared because the joke was so far away from the truth in that the fact mammoth isnt effected. It just didnt make sense to make the joke if it didnt concern the area, of which i am in fact up to date on and is why i understand the climate better, rather than worse, than you. Your "joke" was equivalent to satire without a society to base it off, so thanks for being wrong at every chance posdible

 The moon is open!

Somewhere on the planet a bike park is opening. Where you ask? That's unimportant. Look at these photos instead. Wink

They NEED to get skid marks open... Pedaling over to bullet, follow me, etc is lame.... But and however pretty awesome they opened early!
  • 1 0
Yes! Pedaling actually provides a nice break from all the bumpyness tho haha, but i agree. And they stay open fairly late into the season up there too, so its extra fun all around up there!
  • 4 1
Woohoo! Time to start using that season pass!

Can I get a woot woot!!

Maybe time to put the moto away for a while and flog the DH sled. What's up with that manzanita?

Mammoth 2.5 weeks from now!! How does it compare to big bear. That is the only other place I have been.
  • 2 3
 You'll forget big bear exist

Snow Summit is a joke compared to Mammoth

It's like comparing Snow Summit to Mammoth for skiing/snowboarding...

Snow Summit and Mammoth are a joke compared to Northstar. Snow Summit is great if you are within a couple hours, and Mammoth is fun every once in a while but nothing spectacular. Mammoth is very spread out, the best bike there is a slacked out trail bike because of all the pedaling between trails. If Mammoth is running both lifts, not just the gondola, its a little better.

big bear is nothing to shrug at since it's so close to LA and they're building more trails. but if you were to compare, i'd say herzalot hit the nail on the head in terms comparison - I ski at Snow Summit and of course prefer Mammoth, but Mammoth is 3X the drive. while snow summit is not as expansive and built up and mammoth, it's still not bad. Mammoth is just bigger, more trails, more variety of built vs natural terrain, more elevation change meaning longer runs. Northstar is good too, but compared to Mammoth they're similar - I would not say Mammoth is a joke compared to Northstar. I'll admit that Live Wire is better than any run at Mammoth but other than that, they aren't far apart in terms of quality and fun factor.
  • 1 1
If you need a trail bike to pedal around to the downhill trails at mammoth...you're doing it wrong.
  • 3 2
Wow northstar's opening video and article shat on this... step it up mammoth
  • 1 4
They'd have to hire riders from North Star to ride for them
  • 2 1
Like @ivcrider? I hear that guy shreds
  • 1 0
O Yes, this is great news... Life is good and time to hit up Mammoth!
  • 2 1
I miss Mammoth so. There just isn't an equivalent on Texas...
  • 2 0
Oh do I feel you. Being stuck in DFW sucks. Is it possible to build your own mountain? xD

I completely understand what you're saying. grew up in so cal and my haunts were the Santa Monica mountains, big bear, mammoth, the occasional trip to the Laguna area and anything and everything in between. I was fortunate enough to be in Colorado for almost 3 awesome years (bruised my ribs at Winter Park), and now i am in GA with orders (Army) for Fort Hood. Not seeing a whole lot there but it looks better than Columbus, GA. Apparently, when I was in TN there was some good riding near Campbell but that was during my 4 year hiatus from cycling.
  • 1 0
Fort hood? I think there is some riding off 281 near by.
  • 1 0
i might just make a trip up there this summer.
  • 1 0
 No mention of Pipeline?
  • 1 0
pipeline was already open if you did not mind a little pedaling/pushing
  • 2 0
they need to make a more direct and downhill route to that area where flow and pipeline start. i hate pedalling my dh bike along that little reservoir and the top part of flow.
  • 1 2
 Woot woot!!
