I set a new negative prop record when I said SS is a joke on it's opening day post. I'm just glad a real bike park is open within driving distance.

"So cal's premier bike park" ..... By default. It's embarassing.

Dear mammoth group. Please fix it.
  • 4 0
30 million people live in so cal, 1.5 hr from snow summit, 6 hrs from mammoth. Define driving distance?
  • 3 1
@yakimonti: 8 hrs is within driving distance
  • 2 2
@NorthcountyAM: don't blame SS. They have submitted numerous proposals for trails and they get shot down by the forest service. But the few trails they do have are spectacular. and have been so finely tuned over the years that they are probably the best things you can ride in Southern CA.
  • 2 0
 @Rubberelli: um...I hope you're joking?
  • 1 1
@Rubberelli: sorry bud. Could disagree more. They can do a muuuuuuch better job with what they do have. It is fun, once or twice a year... I was literally just there and it's not spectacular in any way. Trails are still hammered from last year, jumps with lips for a BMX bike... IMO it over rated.

But, to each their own. Glad you are into it.
  • 1 1
@NorthcountyAM: Westridge is a Freeride jumpline and the lips are built for tricks. If it sucked, Kyle Strait wouldn't be up there as much as he is. I'm partial to Miracle Mile though, which is a straight up DH blast. While nowhere close to.the gnarl of a WC course (which Im nowhere close to being a WC racer either), its the closest thing in Southern California.
  • 2 1
@Rubberelli: ever heard of telonics/PGs/skid marx/Etc....you are high if you think summit is the best you can find in SOCAL.....

Miracle Mile is essentially an XC trail.

I don't take issue with the lips of the jumps at SS, but there is practically no flow. I've never been to a lift operated park that requires so much pedaling in between jumps with so little reward.
  • 1 1
@Rubberelli: I'm going to bow out here. There is only a certain amount of nonsense I can tolerate.
  • 1 1
@nvranka: can we go ride bikes? Lol
  • 1 0
@nvranka: I lnow them all, but none have the length amd varied terrain and features, as well as speed as MM. You're high if you think a track you can do over 40mph on is an xc trail. But Skidmarx is total endurro, a bunch of pedalling and about 30mph tops. Has there ever been.a.race.on any of the ones you mentioned? MM was a WC track back in the day.
  • 1 1
@Rubberelli: you have to be trolling me, there's no other explanation.

I'm done
  • 1 1
Anyone who says lips are for tricks about Snow Summit don't know know the difference between a DH and SS bike between your ass and a whole in the road. (Or maybe they do doo) Don't feed the trolls.

Why do so many people complain about trails at bike parks? Just be thankful your are able to ride a bike in the first place and not stuck in a wheelchair or worse born with a deficiency that wouldn't allow you to enjoy the freedom of riding.
1. Try be thankful for the people who build trails for you
2. Try grabbing a shovel and rake and instead of complaining start digging
3. Count yourself lucky you have the time and chance to ride

I went for my first Kamikaze Games last year and had a really good time! The drive (from the SF Bay area) was a decent one but it was rad! If you drive through Yosemite it'll be a extra $30+ FYI. I would suggest checking it out sometime if ya have the chance!
  • 1 0
I drove from SF too - I love Tioga Pass and all, but try the Sonora Pass (Highway 108 outta Modesto) someime - it's free and also insanely scenic with autumn Aspen? colors and boulders galore - incredible near the summit on both sides. Then just shoot down 395.
  • 1 0
@endlessblockades: I will definitely have to check that out this year when I head up! Good looking out!

When I headed out I went out the way that goes to South Lake Tahoe I cant remember the roads off hand but it was really scenic and went through some rad mountain passes, actually pulled the bike out of the back and hit some roadside chunk a few times!

If you go through yosemite late enough the ticket window is closed and it's free!
  • 7 1
Might be going in a couple weeks! First time too. Hope it's as good or enter than SnowSummit

Snow summit is a joke compared to mammoth! Have fun! Sorry, accidental fast finger neg prop Frown
  • 6 4
@NorthcountyAM: +1, Summit is an absolute joke, you'll enjoy mammoth as long as you're OK with loose techy riding
  • 2 0
Are there good bike park-esque jump runs here? I can't seem to find many pics or videos showing anything substantial. The comments are saying this is better than Snow Summit, but the pics and videos are showing otherwise. Any unbiased people ridden both parks? Is the main difference just the amount of trails?

I get the season passes to both. Mammoth last summer (first week of August) all the technical stuff lead directly into litter boxes which sucks for maintaining speed. The pumice stone deteriorates into sand very quickly. Lower skid marks was hub deep sand pits on the switchbacks. There was one trail that was so beat leading into 7 bridges, that the buried electrical cables were coming out of the trail like a trip-wire. I've never ridden a park in such poor conditions. Snow Summit maintains their 2 runs, but they need to build more trails and more technical stuff. Mammoth needs to learn how to maintain their plethora of trails.

100% yeah, Pipeline which is a super fun jump trail, much wider than the trails at summit. There is also twilight zone, recoil, and some other stuff. Summit is fun, but Mammoth is just a whole different feel. Its nice to have more than three trails to ride and not have some 15 year old kid screaming at you very lap.lol I really enjoy both parks, and would highly reccomend you ride mammoth if you have never been there.
  • 3 1
@dmag310: Cactus is an idiot. Mammoth is awesome. Tons of jumps (pipeline, chainsmoke, twilight zone, etc.). And tons of super technical stuff. If you can't handle the pumice, that's your problem.
  • 2 0
@smgishot13: I didn't say I couldn't ride it. I just was being truthful about the shitty condition of the trails. Mammoth was in much better conditions 3 years ago when I rode it.
  • 1 0
Ya, was there end of August and there were a few metal water lines coming up out of the dirt in some weird spots. Mainly metal pipes and electrical wire. No big.
  • 3 0
I'll probably go, but only cause I live 45 minutes away and I have a season pass. I certainly wouldn't pay full price for a day pass to ride those few sections.
  • 2 0
You live in Bishop? How's that?
  • 1 0
@scvkurt03: great if you love rock climbing and hate traffic! Just don't move here single.
  • 1 0
@unrooted: HAHA good one. I got a speeding ticket in Bishop and the cop practically asked me out on a date.

mammoth has a bit of everything, rad park over all! I suggest hitting PIPELINE, TWILIGHTZONE, SHOTGUN, and BREAKTHROUGH!

Just rode Mammoth today. Super bummed! I had fun last year but I think I just didn't know any better. I can handle the kitty litter. I can appreciate a 2 wheel drift but the trail maintenance is non existent. After riding Angel Fire, Keystone and trestle this summer Mammoth was hardly worth riding. Recoil is closed due to "run off damage" and the bike park has been fully open for more than a month! Before I came to Mammoth their website showed some new trails that are also not open yet. According to a bike patroller they should be done in 6-8 wks. Doesn't snow start falling in 8 weeks? It seems clear to me that the management is not serious about having mammoth be a world class bike park. Also the mountain is so large that you cannot lap the trails. For example pipeline is a fun trail, although it looks like no one has done anything to the lips of the jumps in over a year, but in order to get to lap it you would need to endure a wait for the bus, a bus ride, a gondola ride, a mile of XC fire road then 2 miles of a super beat up blue trail for 1 mile of fun jumps followed by a cruse down a condo lined road for another mile to start the "loop" over again. It takes an hour to complete this if you are fast going down.
I spent more time waiting for a bus, riding a bus, riding a tram than I did riding my bike. Honestly. Fore example I have a problem with my hands blistering when I gravity ride but this didn't happen last year or this year when I "rode" Mammoth because I don't actually ride very much. Maybe Mammoth can rescue itself but I will not be riding there tomorrow as I had planned nor will I be returning anytime soon. Stay away for know if you have any place else to ride

Rusty is the man. Juniper is the most underrated trail on the mountain
  • 2 0
Totally. There is never anyone on it and it is a blast for trail bikes. Plus it is in some really cool scenery.
  • 1 0
I hear that they won't be opening the entire mountain until after July 4th because they are still allowing skiing on the upper half until then. I hope they only charge half as much.
  • 2 0
How many bike park's summit is over 11,000 feet? Sure it's volcanic moon dust, but it's our volcanic moon dust.
  • 2 0
Cant beat those views from the summit
  • 2 0
Flow to pipeline to shotgun is the best trails
  • 1 0
Especially compared to N*, you can have a lot of fun on a trail bike at Mammoth. High volume tires are your friend!

Loose is fast, and on the edge of out of control.
