Pin in to win it. Racers were getting after it today. Freshly manicured berms were an invitation to give er on Sea Otter s DH track... But I think I could count on one hand the number of riders I saw actually practicing with a DH sled. Sea Otter s track is much more suited to a modern AM rig with good angles than a full squish sled.

Its not a legit dh-track. Funpark for the travel challenged AM crowd? Pb and industry trying to redefine what dh is?

maybe it's lined with the same kinda advanced foam that's in POC armor and absorbs impacts? a new kind of compression suit? it can't be for speed's sake.

Who can remember when all DHers wore speed suits before they were band? Yes given a choose everyone would where Lyra!

I pulled the following quote from the article you shared - "Fair enough to Tracy if she wants to do that to win, but for the sport and the longevity of the sport, to wear cool race kit and to make an image for yourself is more important than the odd win here and there," said Atherton. I don't think everbody would "want" to wear one. More like they would feel forced to wear one if they weren't banned because you would have to have one to have the competitive edge. I for one am glad they are banned. Can you imagine if MX guys wore spandex to be faster. Ha!

ah the 90s. such an uncomfortable time for us all!

I'm sorry, but those Troy Lee clown suits all the DH'ers wear are almost as stupid looking as that dude's lycra suit. Let's face it people, there is no such thing as a cool looking cyclist. WE ALL LOOK LIKE F'ING DORKS!!! If you believe otherwise, well... ignorance must truly be bliss.

 *almost* but not quite there.

Not a fan of the harlequin pj's either, but at least their roots can be traced back loosely to Palmer, who was/IS cool. Whereas skin suits go back to roadies... which have nothing to do with DH.
  • 9 1
....annnnd of course Palmer or Tomac wearing skinsuits at Mammoth doesn't count, not to mention Nico Vollouz...Smile

I ride road and mountain. No one, and I mean NO ONE, is as stressed or judgmental about appearances as DH riders. Not by a long shot.
  • 2 1
Whether Palmer wore a skin suit or not does not negate my point; he began to bring dh away from the roadie influence and at least align it a little with moto.

Everybody is judgemental - to whatever degree depends on the situation and the people - not the clique. When I see a group of roadies out hammering away in baggie shorts and t-shirts, then I'll believe they're not stressed about appearances. Its a bug that everybody has... vanity knows no bounds Smile
  • 2 0
Cargo shorts and a tee shirt is perfectly acceptable to wear
  • 3 0
Too bad more DH riders don't understand the compliment that riding road can have on their well DH performance.
Roadies wear lycra to cut wind resistance and noise, mostly noise at the slower levels, ever ridden with someone with a piece of clothing flapping in the wind like a flag?

The thing that makes me laugh though is cotton T-shirts and cotton shorts on any bike, about as comfortable as sitting on a cactus.
  • 3 1
"When I see a group of roadies out hammering away in baggie shorts and t-shirts, then I'll believe they're not stressed about appearances."

Makes no sense. Why would roadies wear non-functional clothing that makes them slower and makes carrying food/tools/supplies more difficult? DH riders, OTOH, wear their clothes pretty much just to look like moto riders (or to look UNlike roadies). Roadie clothing is performance-driven. DH clothing is image-driven. Not saying skin suits are necessarily the perfect choice for DH, but between roadies and DHers, I'd say DHers are the more image-conscious ones.

IDGAF what I wear on the track, sometimes its a wifebeater and khaki shorts or sometimes its a full TLD kit, I still have fun and shred all the same. But the BEST is when you are dressed like a complete jack ass but kill the competition, then nobody can make fun of your silly clothes. But you better be fast or you will look like a complete clown!
  • 2 2
 @BKM

"Why would roadies wear non-functional clothing that makes them slower yadda yadda yadda..."

You don't think that DH clothing has a purpose? Whether it's full on kit gear or if it's baggier shorts that go past our knees to a loose fitting jersey or t-shirt, I can think of a number of functions the clothes have.

Some who ride like to ride with a thin layer of upper body armor when we go ride gnarly shale ridden courses or mountains. The larger shirt or jersey fits nicely over that. Then, if we take our bikes to a flowy trail with less consequence, we can ride in the same t-shirt without the armor without having to buy a ton of different clothing.

Baggier shorts are nice for movement. Believe it or not, you move a lot in what can be a bunch of odd positions. Some may not like the feel of their shorts attached to them. If they are too small, they actually can restrict your range of motion, especially with the thicker material that some of the gear is made of. Which brings us to another point...the material. DH is subject to major wear and tear on clothing, so why not wear some clothing built to take the punishment? As far as the length of shorts...personally I like them longer because I wear shin/knee guards, and when pedaling or doing just about anything, shorts like to rise up. And they can tend to rise up and catch on the knee pad if they are too short. PITA.

I can also put small things, such as necessary tools, keys, what have you in the pockets that I have without suffering any riding consequences.

Finally, I can go to the bar afterward in my bike gear comfortably, and not make anyone else uncomfortable when I'm ordering a drink next to them.

Each discipline of biking has "functional" gear, but it doesn't mean that any other discipline isn't functional because it's a different style.

I wear so much padding i look like roboco. I'm starting to wish they would just make a robocop looking kit, because that's how twitchy i look riding.
  • 2 1
I've gone the the bar post Road ride in full team kit, no one cares other then the person wearing it mainly. But by "Bar" I mean patio, and by "no one cares" I mean I don't care what the other people there think of my race kit when I'm chillin post 2hr+ ride with a few riding friends.

Wear what ever you want, so long as you understand the difference between "Cotton" and "performance" and how when excercising the only place Cotton has is in the towel you dry yourself off with.

God, how many times did the author need to remind us that mid travel "enduro" bikes are cool and DH bikes are not.
  • 10 1
This is ridiculous. None of the riders had use for a DH bike because the track was not a DH track. Never said anything about the coolness of DH bikes.

For the otter it's go clips or go home. It's a 2min track that's basically all sprinting.

Is it really necessary to have constant digs at the DH track at Sea Otter? It's already well known that it's not a very steep or rocky/rooty course, and that it doesn't require a DH bike. That doesn't mean it doesn't take skill to go down it, and it also doesn't mean that it's not fun.

Amazing how no one cares about Sea Otter weekend when there was a World Cup going on, poor scheduling and unfortunate for the Sea Otter event, but I know I haven't given it a single thought until 2 days later which is a bummer because usually this is an awesome event to check out and read about. It probably still is but without MANY key people being there to race and just show off then its just not as exciting. Basically I'm saying that when UCI puts a schedule out they stick to it and don't change so events like this can get full attendance by riders and spectators.
  • 1 0
The UCI obviously doesn't 'stick to it' when it comes to their scheduling -- they're the dopes that moved PMB's date, not the Sea Otter orgs. It's a shame they felt it reasonable and acceptable to conflict such an awesome cycling event... While the 'DH' course isn't all that great, SOC is an amazing weekend for cycling and it would have been nice to have the usual crowds, competitors and spectators there.
