Video: Valentina Hoell - The Next Downhill Superstar

In September we met Valentina Hoell, a 13-year-old downhill racer in her hometown Saalbach-Hinterglemm, Austria. She lives in mountain biker’s paradise: endless trails, downhill tracks, high mountains and deep forests, a place where you can count falling stars and hear the sound of cowbells. Valentina lives with her family in the famous "Spielberghaus", a rustic lodge in the Austrian mountains. Nothing around there but nature.

Vali is an exceptional talent in downhill racing. When she was three years old, she got her first bike without training wheels. She even 'competed' at the Scott Junior Trophy and made her first experiences in racing. Now she is rushing trails and downhill tracks faster than any of the kids at her age. At this year’s iXS Rookies Cup she had best times (amongst the boys), was even faster than all women and beat the locals in the Crankworx B-Line Kids Race in Canada. This girl has got talent and also the attention of bike manufacturer YT Industries! They closed a six years sponsorship deal at the beginning of this year. But it is not a classic sponsorship – Vali has more rights than duties - no musts, only cans.

In Saalbach, Valentina has the perfect conditions to live her dream. With the local guys she shreds through the forests, the girls at her age are not as fast as she is. Her father can’t teach her anything new, therefore they decided to work with a professional trainer: "My father always gives me advice, but I rather trust the pros", Vali admits and grins. Valentina knows a lot of them: Cam Zink, Tibor Simai, Antje Kramer, Angie Hohenwarter. They all believe in Valentina and her potential. So how will she continue? Valentina dreams of a career as a downhill pro and wants to compete in the World Cup. She gets every support from her family, friends and sponsors, it does not matter what it is – 800 km shuttling to the next race or a big hug if the results are not as good as expected. Racing consists of good and bad times – that is something she still has to learn. More races, more competitors!

YT announced Vali’s entry in the team with a press release titled: 'YT gets the Downhill World Champion 2022' Quite a strong statement, even Valentina was surprised but also happy. But as you all may know: It is quite difficult to predict the future of 13 years old girls!

Looks like her brutal training regimen is paying off. ;-) I am a fan of the Vali girl, and can't wait to see what she will do in the sport!

Come on USA - we must have 5 or 6 girls among our 300+ Million people who can compete in Women's Elite World Cup Downhill! Jill Kintner won't be around forever!

We do, but sadly they often end up quitting the sport for some reason once they hit high school. Hormones, peer pressure, whatever it is... I know two young rippers personally who hung up the bike right as they were about to really make waves.

@b-mack that makes a lot of sense. To be a pro cyclist for a woman means to put off having a family and the female body is much more delicate and prone to injury. Female DH'ers are guaranteed to have scars from broken collarbones alone. Just look at Tracey Hannah! Broken femur!

The problem isn't the girls, it's everything/everyone else that refuses to back them including manufacturers; see my FB post to Specialized here: www.facebook.com/specializedbicycles/posts/10152836372677579.

@mbrianmills That's a sad truth too. Look at the big teams out there like Santa Cruz and Specialized...not a gravity pro woman in sight...and it's not like they don't have the funding, just no desire to field women. The injury factor is a big one too @orastreet1... My sister was winning most of her sport class races and ready to go expert when her third collar bone break required surgery. Sold the bike and didn't look back after years of DH. It's obviously a combination of factors, but regardless, I'm sure we would all love to see more girls ripping up the DH circuit.

Yet another woman who'll be calling out "on your right" as she sails past me on A-Line. How cool is that? Enjoy the ride, Vali!

The look of determination in her eyes when she is riding tells the story. Im looking forward to watching her kill it in future races. Why do I have a feeling I would be passed by a thirteen year old girl if I saw her on the trails Smile

She probably got put of biking for life after all the comments that this sites users left behind and the following shit storm.

good question. She was with the UR team then injured? I was stoked to see her do well in races. Hope she's ok.

She had a pretty good bonk to the head a couple of years back. Pretty sure that put her off gravity racing permanently.
  • 6 2
She'd probably be even faster if she didn't run bars that were wider than she is tall

So freaking amazing... Watching this is like a dream come true. Chicks on bikes from a young age and coached and encouraged by a community?? YESSSS. Smile

What a great future she has!

She looks like she's riding a 29'er, proportion wise! Will she keep the proportion the same as she grows, and we'll see two nines in DH?
  • 2 0
Yup, just another rider who's faster than me...
  • 1 0
So rad! Wish her the best.
  • 2 2
She's driving with her hips and looking ahead, not bad upper body stability, future ahead she has! All the best of luck!
