You definitely need a MTB. While its mostly fast double track, CX bikes with skinny and fragile tyres wouldn't survive. There were some really rough sections and a few days had some technical riding. HT or FS is debatable though. HT is fine, but FS would certainty be more comfortable for such a long race. MBC was epic, I loved it. If you want a race that doubles up as a unique experience I can certainly recommend it.
