Results: Mens DH - Hafjell World Cup

Sep 15, 2013 at 6:54
by Matt Wragg
Stevie Smith repeats in Hafjell as Atherton falters! In a nail biting finale, Stevie Smith takes his second consecutive win, both in the series and at Hafjell. Gee Atherton made a small mistake in the rocks, dropping him back to 12th. Danny Hart put in his strongest ride of the season to claim second and Andrew Neethling scores his best ever World Cup result with third. As it stands it's going to be a nail-biting fight between Smith and Atherton for the series overall title next week in Leogang!

  • 46 0
He ripped that rock garden better/smoother than any other rider... unreal
  • 50 0
Yeah happy to seem him get closer and closer to the top! I feel like he's perhaps waiting on one last big win to have proper closure on his amazing career..I hope he does!
  • 6 1
@ spicy mike, +1 on that bro!!
  • 28 2
I hope Steve Peat gets some serious recognition from our country for what he has done for our sport when he eventually, god forbid, retires. 6th! and still a major force at his age, beating people half is age is nothing short of amazing.
  • 18 0
steve peat is truly inspirational. no reason to stop riding with the way he's going.
  • 4 0
bloody good result for the brits 4 top ten, but well done stevie
  • 3 0
I don't think any DH racer is good enough for UK national news, they never show our sport. I suppose peaty's career is nothing compared to say a snooker player!
  • 1 0
Happy to see Peat ripping a gnarly track like that and making top ten. Im equally happy to see Smith take the win by almost 2 seconds. He is such an awesome guy with a long career ahead of him, just so exciting to watch on a bike.

"wetter than a dolphin with a bladder infection" Awesome. Chainsaw!!!!!

The track is damper than Prince Phillips underwear.

I am soo rooting for him, I hope he is as nice in real life as he seems in his interviews. He looks so unassuming, on the podium playing around with Danny Smile GO GO STEVIEEEE!!!
  • 20 1
Trust me he is, my mate met him in morzine and he took their family pictures for them, they then realized who he was. Legend! Stevie is THE man, he deserves an overall.
  • 4 0
Yes Stevie, so stoked!! Plus Mark Wallace in 3rd for juniors. Good day for Devinci and Canada
  • 3 0
Just plain old "Steve" hey guys, Stevie makes him sound like a kid on a school bus who licks the windows with a helmet on.
  • 1 0
^ HAHAHA... But in all seriousness, he will remain Stevie in our hearts forever Wink

So happy to see Hart back on the Podium. I guess he really is the king of mud.
  • 11 4
going by the last two races it seems stevie is the mud king right now
  • 26 1
naaahhhh, this was dryer than a nuns clunge for Danny
  • 3 1
Stevie is just king of everything! Hart continually proves his prowess in the damp, just look at results and weather conditions.
  • 4 1
I hope it pisses hard at Leogang race day. Hart will destroy that track.
  • 1 0
The weather in Europe is wet at the moment. My phone says it will rain there all week but get sunny on Friday. But the weather apps are never right. I do think it will be wet tho
  • 4 0
Portugal is sunny as hell. WC could use a race here sometime :-)
  • 43 3
Wow Stevie!!!! Only 17 points back going into the final race, watch out Gee here comes the mustache!!! Smile
  • 2 0
Anyone know where you can find the scoring rules? Tried Google but couldn't find it.
  • 1 0
 Try UCI website

I am completely torn. I am happy to see Gee back on top and doing his thing along with his Sis, especially after having a rough streak and of course what happened with Dan. But man is it incredibly exciting to think Stevie might take the overall. My heart really started to race, literally, when I realized that.
  • 1 0
Gee won the first 2 races, then came 2nd twice, then was a non-factor at Worlds, then this at Hafjell. He's on the decline and Stevie is gaining momentum! Stevie is taking the overall next week!!! Wink
  • 24 0
i must say! Hurray for sir Steve Peat!!! great job m8!
  • 18 0
Massive props to Red Bull again for what had to be the best coverage of a race in the history of this sport. Ok, there have been some more exciting actual race runs on some previous coverage, but considering the weather, the quality of the camera work, the amount of cameras, the replays, overall, it makes this sport look so damn good.
  • 7 0
The hanging camera at the start section was AWESOME.
  • 20 1
I feel real bad for mic and gee though. Would gave been nice to see them perform at 100%
  • 8 2
I wouldnt suggest they weren't at 100%, just possibly pushing a little too hard.
  • 9 1
To be clear, what i meant by 100% is for them to have performed flawlessly, without crashing,
  • 12 1
It'd be a weird sport if everyone performed flawlessly, without crashing, all the time
  • 20 0
I can't be the only one impressed that Gee can stop for tree hugging and still finish 12th. Sets up perfectly for what basically amounts to a winner takes all showdown in Leogang!
  • 3 1
Piks: that is true.. However by not crashing you get a better idea of what they would be capable of when they put down a solid run. More exciting in some ways
  • 2 0
I hear ya. Nobody wants to see a race outcome determined by a crash. But like @tkrug said, how hard you push and how much risk you take plays such a big part. When you're in in for the points or overall, maybe you only ride at 98% for consistency. When you're a hunger young gun with nothing to lose, maybe you ride at 105% for a win. Gee knew Stevie's time, and maybe that played into how much on the edge he rode. To me, that makes it all the more exciting!
  • 1 0
Not at all AllMountin. It's impressive. What track was it that Gwin had his "off course" on where he had to run back UP the track and still ended up winning?
  • 20 2
Ladies and gentlemen.... THE CANADIAN CHAINSAW MASSACRE! STEVIE SMITH!!! Atta guy, props on represesenting Stveie!
  • 17 0
Gee, if you're a gentleman, you gotta marry that tree now.
  • 5 0
 hahaha!
  • 16 1
 Nice run Danny!
  • 14 0
watch out for that Gee, oh I mean tree
  • 1 0
Gee, Gee of the Jungle, watch out for that tree...... oww!!
  • 10 0
4 out of 5 rainy runs, the mustache has been scientifically proven to provide over 173% boost. Stevie and Danny know this.... and now so do we.
  • 8 0
How can all these DH race fans not know that Gwin didn't race? Great race today. Sick track. My shoulder would have exploded had I had hugged a tree like that. I wonder if Gee drives a Prius? I was bummed for Mic - he is giving it everything! Congrats Stevie - been rooting for him since Seasons...
  • 11 0
 Gee watch that tree!!!!! Frown
  • 20 0
Yeah what a fucking beast ! he took that full in the chest and just carried on....my chest would of imploded

Congrats to Stevie, killed it again, must be wishing he rode his Wilson at Worlds and not pissed around on gimmicks! What could have been. Just on it at mo on tha Wilson. Peaty keep saying it true legend as a sportsman let alone in DH, totally amazing result and well earned, inspiring! What happened to Hill disapointed to see him in 15th, but crap happens that why its called racing, theyre are no what ifs!
  • 3 0
How the hell can gee come to a complete stop in the rougher part of the course, where its so hard to get back up to speed and still finish 12th! Beating the likes of Sam hill by 3 places. Absolutey amazing. Stevie nailed it again, every line to perfection and Steve peat 6th and easily the quickest through the rock gardens. Great race.
  • 7 0
Hey Gee, go hug a tree!
  • 3 1

So... I've been up since 5am GMT and never saw the race broadcasted. I've been watching red bull tv waiting for it to come on. But all I see is the Sebastian Vettel bullshIt on repeat. Glad you guys got to watch the race.
  • 1 3
Bwahahaha. Your parties suck mtbbiker! You missed out big time!
  • 1 1
It wasn't on the TV app, which is how I usually watch it too. Watched it through the pc, great coverage and commentary as usual.
  • 2 0
I watched on the RedBull app no problems
  • 1 0
How can I get negative prop for a factual statement. It was not on the Samsung Smart TV Red Bull app, and as the OP stated, Sebastian Vettel and Baumgartner were on repeat, and that incredible deaf motor girl. Fact.

Regardless, the coverage was superb. And I hope Gee can finish up, hasn't he qualified first in all the World Cups so far?
  • 2 0
mikecawsey -- her name is Ashley Fiolek. I hope she someday switches to dh she's fucking awesome. And no - Gee didn't quali first at all the wc's, he crashed out at MSA which is why he was down before the rain started for the top guys.
  • 2 0
