Is this the times runs or actually race runs now?

The new ACC - she'll dominate for awhile now I'm sure.

 Dude.....just dude....can't you read?

*In total deadpan monotone* "Rachel won? Wow... what a surprise. I'm shocked."

Well done to Rach. But a 16 second gap is ridiculous. The other women really need to up their game if the stand any chance of beating her. After all this is at world level!
  • 3 1
Yes, but rachel is out of this world fast... mabye we'll have to find ET's sister to compete against Rachel
  • 6 0
8.6 seconds faster, 16 in practice, pinkbike posted the wrong timings.
  • 2 2
Ah fair enough. Still a big gap though.

Rachel has a ton of resources at her disposal for training and access to training locations that not everyone has. Her strength and fitness are on another level and I don't think the other girls can compete with that right now... but the Athertons are the darlings of dh mtb, no denying it, look how they can afford to live. I'm sure she works her butt off to get these wins but you can't look down on the rest of the field for not being where she's at.

rbka- so... you know all the ladies' training regimes including Rachel's?

Sounds like you might be talking outta your bum on this one Wink I'm pretty sure the other WC riders on factory teams have access to trainers and training programs that are not unlike what Rachel has access to... other than that, I don't see what else she has access to as the "darling of dh mtb" that would give her such an advantage, other than extreme dedication which all the Athertons share and is prob. why they're all doing really well... not because they have access to "training locations" that other riders don't.

Well they do make videos and put them on Redbull TV so yes the general public watch and get a good idea of their training. But sounds like maybe you know a lot more than the rest of us on here! ;-)

Rbka, sounds like you've not been to the UK? I was born and spent the first 19 years of my life a few miles away from where the Athertons have come from.....and it ain't Whistler. Anyone who can get to the top by starting their career riding on sheep trails bloody well deserves it. If people want to beat Rachel then they just have to try harder. It's as simple as that!

"and access to training locations that not everyone has" - that comment didn't really sink in when I first read it. Ha hah aah ahahhah ahaha ahaahhaa hah aha hahaha ahaha....... Why didn't Gatto win by 45 seconds then?

This vid might help you understand the condition of woman's DH racing: www.pinkbike.com/news/The-Guts-Behind-The-Glory-Micayla-Gatto-video-2013.html

If the all the girls had proper support so they could focus on racing and not their 9-5 we might see a change. I dunno about Rachel but sure as hell the other girls doing a solid job just to race at wc level and dealing with every day life at the same time.

With that said, it does not take any credit from Rachel, she is phenomenal!

The big question is why the top females don't get as much support from us and the sponsors? Just compare the amount of comments on the ladies and the men's result.

I haven't watched the video but I totally agree. The other women are just not supported in the same way as her. I suppose being part of the Atherton clan is a huge advantage to her and they are a sponsors dream so the money and support they get is better than most female riders can dream of. Perhaps the sponsors need to sort themselves out and start employing these riders properly so they can solely focus on their sport rather than having to do a 9-5 job to make ends meet. After all the bike industry is boyant at the moment to the companies arnt short of cash. This way there will be some proper competition for her as its getting a bit 'Sebastion Vettel' at the moment.

A few seconds with teh Google shows why Rachel gets the support that she does. In three years she went from National Champion, Junior World Champion, European Champion, World DH Series Winner and World Champion! Everyone else can moan all the want but they are not the ones getting the results.

Yeah she is awesome! Still I want moaaaar!!

Woah, didn't notice all the hate I got on that one hahaha. Well, Ragot went to school as a full time student in the off-season and only graduated last year, Tracey Hannah works full time in the off-season as a dredger in Aus, Micayla Gatto works at Bean Around the World Coffeeshop, Lululemon and as a spin class instructor.... These are just the examples I know of from following them on twitter/instagram. Hell, even Clare Buchar doesn't have a World-cup ride anymore -- she and Kovarik have their own racing/coaching company and she also has a design business on the side. Their focus can't be on their training and RECOVERY FROM TRAINING (which is equally important) full-time when they're also juggling these other jobs.
The Athertons have a full gym AT THEIR HOUSE, they have access to physiotherapy, massage therapy, cryotherapy, etc as needed (other athletes have to pay out of pocket for this). Did you see Tracey Hannah's at home gym? It's 3 machines and a couple of free-weights. In terms of locations what about those amazing jumps in her backyard?
Just saying. Don't talk down on the other women because Rachel's situation is very unique.

The amazing jumps that the Athertons themselves only recently had built, and are open for everyone to ride, including some of my mates who recently went to check them out? I've not stalked Rachel enough to know for a fact, but I'd assume when she was 16-19 years old she'd have had some sort of job / education, and as I've previously stated she would have been riding on mediocre trails on rolling hills. She went out and EARNED her victories. Whatever she has now is a direct result of those victories (i.e. not 5th or 6th places....) so if she NOW has better training facilities to others due to being BETTER, then really it's just tough shit for everyone else.

I agree with everyone about the extra support that Rachel gets and it shows in her results. The sponsors need to start taking note of this and giving their world cup racers full sponsorship, full wage and proper training and coaching. Otherwise they will never see their bikes regularly on the top step on the podium if they dont it will be a GT all the time (well as long as she rides for them). These bike compianies "have" the money to do this especially the big brands. The only girl that has really been knocking on Rachels door is Manon Carpenter and hopefully she will regularly start beating her from next year. Again she is very well supported so it just goes to show if they have the back up it is possible.
