The Scottish weather definitely has a sense of humour. After grim tales of impending apocalypse today, of torrential ran, 40mph winds and winter temperatures the race organisers were left with a stark choice last night. Risk dangerous weather or pull the pin and cut the race short. In the end they erred on the side of safety, cutting the unpopular stage six (and the very popular stage seven) from the race, but extending stage eight to start from the top of the hill. Come this morning the town awoke to the rain lashing against rooftops, but it had no conviction, subsiding by mid-morning and eventually even giving way to blue skies. For the fastest riders this still meant around 15 minutes of timed stages today and with the fresh, deep mud waiting for the in the forest, a test for even the best riders in the world...

The strong winds and sideways rain forecast for the day never really materialized but the overnight deluge of rain still turned the race into a slip and slide.

This is what fresh loamy dirt looks like after a night of rain and a few hundred racers. It s quite safe to say the conditions on Sunday could not have been any more different to the dusty and tacky tracks ridden one day prior.

Local lad Gary Forrest did not have a good weekend. He went down awkwardly at the start of stage one in practice suffering compression fractures in five vertebrae and cracking rib. With six weeks in his brace and then a long rehab to get back to strength that looks a lot like his season written off for this year.

If it weren t for a one minute time penalty picked up at the start of stage one for missing his start time we would be talking about Rene Wildhaber s first top ten of the season. After his injury at the start of the season he looks to be gathering momentum for and with six weeks before the next race in Samoens he has plenty of time to put the work in to get himself back to the front.

Mark Scott this weekend showed the form that many in the UK have known he has for some time now. Over the winter he has been putting in the punishment with Alan Milway who also trains the Athertons and today that hard work began to pay off with his best ever result at an EWS - 5th.

It s been a long time coming. Justin Leov has been so close since last season denied a couple of wins by cruel little twists of fate. Today is finally came good for him sealed with his demolition of the entire field on the final and longest stage - putting 10 seconds into second-placewd Richie Rude and 23 seconds into the then-race leader Florian Nicolai.

About the Photographers

Matt Wragg • Age: 32 • Years Shooting: 3
Maybe best-known as a long-standing member of Pinkbike's European editorial team, Matt is also a successful commercial photographer. As the first English-speaking photographer to follow and document the nascent European enduro scene, he was shooting enduro well before it became a marketing buzzword or a shade of blue. Today he is still one of the few photographers to make his living following the discipline and has built up an enviable client list that includes many of the top teams and brands in the world.

Dave Trumpore • Age: 35 • Years Shooting: 4
Dave spent the bulk of the past 17 years racing professionally before realizing that despite qualifying for the random World Cup final here and there, the next generation was just way too fast and way more talented. Upon hanging up his racing boots in 2010, it would be a few years until Dave picked up a camera and started shooting the odd race here and there as a way to stay in touch with all the friends he had made over the years, and the rest as they say is history. In just a few years time his photos have graced the pages of just about every MTB magazine and major media outlet, while his commercial client list includes a who's who of the cycling industry, and he is lucky enough to shoot regularly with some of the best riders on the planet. Currently at Pinkbike, Dave shoots the Downhill WC and the Enduro World Series as well as contributing to the occasional editorial story.

I think we should all give a massive slow clap to @MattWragg and @DaveTrump for the incredible coverage from the last two weeks. I think it's nearly impossible for most people to comprehend how hard it is to shoot photos all day, then edit and post incredible images within a few hours after the event is over. I think Pinkbike is miles ahead of all other action sports websites (not just other mtn bike sites) when it comes to the quality of images seen here. We are all way too spoiled to realize it.
And cut them a break on the grammar and spelling mistakes; I'm honestly surprised they're still able to string sentences together with the workload they're dealing with.

or what is actually interesting is that half the bikes on the podium had head angles of 67 degrees!
  • 1 0
headangle means nothing since 67 is enough. personally i think 66-66.5 is happy medium . go too slack and it gets sketchy on corners/uphills

That red Trek line of bikes are so sexy
  • 2 0
Yeah, I love the solid red. The first MTB I bought was a Trek in red with white letters/accents like this. I bought it solely because of that. Good to see it's making a comeback. Specialized's new Demo comes in a solid red now too and it looks amazing.

Can someone please clarify: seems like some people are doing the downhill stages in a full face helmet while others are wearing their xc lid? Is it optional? I thought all riders had to wear a full-face lid for the descents? Just curious.
  • 2 0
 Full-face optional at Tweedlove
  • 1 0
It depends on the round : in Scotland the rule was : helmet mandatory at all time (including transitions), full face optionnal

Great pics and summary! Anyone know where we can find some video coverage of the event? Looking for more than a 1 minute recap.
