Luck of the Irish: Race Day - EWS Round 3, Ireland

May 15, 2016 at 16:51
by Matt Wragg

It's midnight, racing stopped some five hours ago and my ears are still ringing. While last year's turnout was amazing for this race, this year the fans turned it up to 11. There were more chainsaws, cowbells, horns and whistles than I've ever seen at an enduro race. Then there is the fancy dress, usually with some twist that means you wouldn't want your grandmother to see what was being worn on track. Like the Pope with a giant penis drawn on his leg... There are no fans quite like the Irish and I think most people in the circuit would be happy to bring them all with us to each stop. That kind of atmosphere changes a race. All the little niggles and imperfections fade into insignificance as it just lifts the whole event. So much so that riders with mechanicals were going to extraordinary lengths to get back to the pits to keep going just for the fans. More than a few of the top riders earned DNFs, missing stages after problems, but ended up going back up later in the day to put on a show for the fans. While Niall and the crew have undoubtedly put together a slick, professional event, it is the work they put into promoting it, and making sure that people come to watch it, that leaves so many of the riders and media going away thinking that this is one of the best races of the year.

And what a race the riders put on for those fans. In the women's field, Tracy Moseley returned to race for the fans and put on a masterclass in how to dominate an enduro race. In the men's race, well, where do you start? The lead chopped and changed throughout the day as riders' fortunes ebbed and waned. But as the day went on the unthinkable started to become real - local lad Greg Callaghan started to break through to the front of the pack... Hot on his heels were one of the greatest downhillers of our time, Sam Hill, and last year's series champion, Richie Rude, charging from misfortune to smash chunks out of the lead and come within a gnat's breath of upsetting the whole repeat fairytale. While last year's ride from Greg was stunning, he came in as an outside bet, few could dare to hope that he would bring it home. This year there was pressure, and there was an expectation. There were thousands of fans who in no small part came to see him win again. To deal with that in the way he did is astounding, and demonstrates a level of mental strength that few athletes possess. There are scarce few riders in the sport who have ever won at the highest level on their home soil - just ask riders like Steve Peat, Greg Minnaar or Fabien Barel how difficult and special it is to achieve once in a career. To achieve it twice is something even fewer have ever done. Greg is Ireland's first ever professional enduro mountain biker and as the man who brought the fairytale to life twice, his place in history for Irish mountain bikers is assured after today.

What is so impressive about Florian Nicolai s riding is the detail. In this corner he was simply sharper than anybody else on the gas pedalling again while most people would have been getting the bike lined up once more. It s only a fraction of a second but a series of these fractions down the length of a track adds up. He was right at the front today but slipped back to fifth as the day went on.

What can we say about Greg Callaghan? Repeating the win on home soil is unbelievable.

Shock of the day goes to Dan Wolfe. He raced most of the EWS season last year and came away with a bag of fairly average results. He always felt he could do more and showed thay today with a stunning eighth overall from a rider who most readers will probably never have heard of before.

A familiar feeling for Tracy Moseley.

While Greg had plenty of fans rooting for him at trackside today he also had nearly as many family with the Callaghan clan out in full force.

Looks like an awesome weekend going by the number of smiles. As much as i'd love to see Sam Hill ride DH for the rest of my days, wonder if we'll see him on the EWS circuit next year??
  • 24 3
You are unleashing fire and fury with that comment. Pink bikers are going to hate it if he does swap. Time will tell.

Enduro is when all the " retired" downhillers go.

@racecase: Haters are hating because you put your finger on it ... I would add retired or not good enough. Show the "level" on this circuit compared to DH where Sam struggles to do a top 10 at the moment (as much as i like this rider its a fact).
  • 10 4
@Balgaroth: no it's not you don't have a clue what you are on about. Martin maes who still hasn't won an ews, absolutely destroyed the junior downhill field both times he has raced it. He will be racing again next week and I would not be surprised at all to see him get a top 10 in the elites. Richie Rude would be in with a very strong shout of the win, I have no doubt about.

Also, have you forgotten about Graves winning a DH silver medal in 2013? And what about all the dh riders that race and can't get anywhere near the positions they get in DH.

DH probably is the top level but this is not far behind at all.
  • 4 0
@racecase: didn't know Richie Rude was retired at 21 years of age...
  • 10 0
@mike365: I think the reason Sam Hill and Blenki do so well in in endure is because it is much more about technique and speed carrying than DH is.

The Irish EWS was all about cornering ability and not losing momentum. In dh you need big balls and that will gain you time if you are willing to take massive chances. While you need to be pinned in enduro, it isn't the same risk factor and technique is rewarded more.

Sam hill is one of the best cornering riders of all time. In one very difficult berm I was watching he was visibly quicker than the others. His cornering body position was an exhibition and he carried a ton of speed out. I bet rat boy would have done well in Ireland too.
  • 4 0
@racecase: at first you could throw that in because of voullioz of barel (hardly field stacked full of them), but now it's its own beast, Maes is a brilliant example: amazing skill combined with a fitness level that can piss 100km in a few days and still smash the stages at race pace. Love downhill but I'm loving Enduro too, hey it's all mtb racing init!? Props for the bait though ;-)

So much respect for Steve Smith everywhere and from everyone.. Life goes on then.. You are not forgotten Stevie.

Can't believe Greg pulled it out of the bag again. Amazing result.
For those who know Dan Wolfe the surprise was his average results from last year. This guy is an amazingly talented rider.
I was out with masters, between practice and liasons in the race i had chatted to a bunch of the pro's, All down to earth guys and gals more than happy to shoot the breeze on the peddle up.
The format where a Dad of four ( mtb end user) can shoot the breeze on his way to stage 6 with Jarred Graves on his way to stage 2 is pretty unique.
My family came up to support me and we all stayed on to see the pro's.
My kids where blow away by the displays of raw power and skill.
Then the was the alien with the anti gravity device Florian Nicolai pointing into the crowd off a booter on stage 6 and Greg Callaghan doing similar.
They will never forget that and the subsequent Roars.
The Irish round of EWS really is something special

Suggestion - Would love to read more of the stories behind all the mechanicals and such. Like where/under what conditions Rude flatted, and what it took to get down that stage. Guessing he wasn't running procore (who is?). And same for Beerten - why did she end her stage 2 early? (what is stage 2?). etc etc. Just some more context for everything.

Great coverage though!
  • 9 1
I was marshal at the bottom of stage 2 and four or five of the pros came down on flat tyres including Richie Rude. After the top section of rocks and open mountain it was a long physical run through woodland. Riders were coming down and huffing and puffing - you could hear the breathing before you could hear the tyres. Richie whipped off his rear wheel and put in a tube. There was no stress or impatience - himself and Josh Carlson and two others were all fixing flats at the same time. Scary moment when a twig went into Greg's rear wheel and snapped as he passed the finish gate on Stage 2. Sounded like it had gone into the rear mech, which would have been game over.
  • 9 0
Stage two started at the top of the hill. It is open mountain conditions, rock and peat. Soft and hard a ying and yang of conditions so to speak. Over the previous days practice the soft gave way to the hard ie holes formed in the peat and exposed even more rock. The start is techy almost Trials'y and right out the gate a you hit a compression which you had to bunnyhop out of up onto a rock slab. Speed and aggressive riding was the key. By race day there where rocks exposed in what had been previously a peat compression. It was a case of hit them fast and hard to make your line and possibly puncture or do what i did and not risk the puncture so early, not bring enough speed to carry over the top rock into the next section and OTB. It was a fine line.

He's the first professional rider from the Republic of Ireland, both Ben Reid and Glynn O'Brien (who was also pro) are from Northern Ireland.

All this flat tires will have many racers considering procore, super gravity, double down, or full on DH tires. Maybe they were already? Anyone know what guys like Richie Martin and Jared were using?
  • 7 0
Richie was using a minion on the front with an aggressor on the rear with the new maxxis double down protection sidewalls. Jared looked to be riding 2 cut down Specialized HillBillys, Vouilloz also punctured what looked to be pretty much a XC tyre on the rear.
  • 2 0
Richie uses double down. Punctures still and always will affect racing.

lol remember 2 years ago in France when Justin Leov smoked everyone on day 1 by running DH tyres when half the field flatted on lighter tyres. Then on day 2 he chose lighter tyres, flatted and lost what would have been his first ews win.

To be fair. Theres more rocks on stage 2 alone than there were on all of the Rotorua round last year. I think its fair to say no matter what they were running there were always going to be a few punctures

 @dh1stan:
I live here and carrick is my local, until I went tubeless with magic Mary's f/r and a ton of gunk,I was constantly flatting all over the hill!! It changes so much with weather/traffic there's always something ready to flat your tire when you think your safe!! I suffer the drag etc on th climbs for the protection going down. But yeh those exposed rock/peat scrip s can be lethal!!

In some sports (like sailing for example) you compete all stages and then you can discard your worst result.
The final result comes from the rest ''best'' stages.
Maybe this format can have a good application in EWS.
Just saying....

Except they are timed stages so this absolutely cannot work unless they ride the stages more than once
