Mountain Creek Bike Park in Vernon, NJ is proud to announce the Grand Opening of their new Lower Greenhorn trail this Saturday July 18th at 10AM. Lower Greenhorn completes the resort's new, nearly 2-mile long, top-to-bottom beginner flow trail. The culmination of two years of construction totaling over 2,500 man and machine hours and requiring more than 1,200 tons of dirt. The new Greenhorn trails were specifically designed to introduce new riders to the thrills of gravity fueled mountain biking by using the pitch and grades of the terrain to naturally control the rider's speeds. This new trail is a long awaited addition to Mountain Creek’s trail offering opening the world of downhill to all levels and types of riders.

"I'm super excited to see our guests riding this trail. The resort and the Trail Crew worked long and hard to bring these two trails to reality and it's definitely something I've been wanting to see here at the mountain for a long time. We have a great group of instructors and lesson programs here at the mountain and now we've given them the terrain to take those experiences to the next level. I can't wait to get out and ride it with the guests" - Marc Tremain, Mountain Creek Bike Park Operations Manager.

Mountain Creek Bike Park is open Daily through September 7th and Friday through Sunday until November 1st. The #1 rated Bike Park in the Mid-Atlantic by the readers of MTBPark.com and the closest lift-serviced Mountain Biking to the New York City and Philidelphia metro areas.  OK, neg prop away...

But shouldnt ALL riders, beginners especially learn to mountain bike on natural terrain (singletrack) vs buffed out freeways....I mean, c'mon guys - we ride mountain bikes with suspension for a reason...I could ride this mamajama on a crossbike....

great work by the ways guys. thanks for putting in the sweat and blood into our sport.

While it would be great if everyone started learning by riding natural terrain in the woods, it's just not every going to happen. As long as Joeys know there's a place to take their girlfriend for a cool date with no pedaling involved, you will ALWAYS have beginners putting themselves (and seasoned riders) in serious peril.

I totally understand why a lift served mountain would want a place for the newbs to go and stay more or less out of harms way, and out of other riders' way.

Besides, it's always been said that pump & flow are hugely important aspects of gaining and maintaining speed. Can't hurt for 45 yr old dad and 9 yr old son to at least start learning that early. Oh, and did I mention these kinds of trails keep them out of our collective way?
  • 16 3
Oh, and I should add that Mountain Creek is a massively underrated place to ride.

It stomps most other parks in the nation for sheer variety and quality of trails & features.
  • 16 3
New riders should learn to ride on natural terrain, with only front suspension, helps them learn to pick lines from the beginning. Start by teaching your kids this way.

And taking your girlfriend out for a date mountain biking (if she doesn't ride) is the best way to get rid of your girlfriend.

If every single trail on the mountain was this groomed and smooth it would be an issue. As long as there is variation and there is good representation of trail styles and conditions, no foul. Although, I do feel a smooth, wide trail like this should lean towards safe pump and jump progression with rollable tables and doubles like @ctmtb98 mentioned in his comment. Same should be said for rough singletrack trails too. The more the merrier and have trail styles for each skill level.
Take BMX tracks for instance, safe for a huge age range, options in approach for every skill level, and builds some of the most important bike handling techniques at speed. A ton of MTB pros cut their teeth in BMX. Dirt jumping spots in BMX are usually nut up or shut up situations which is intimidating and injury prone for younger riders.
All that being said, all skill levels should be accommodated, BUT it is up to the rider to keep pushing their own progression. Some people are too reserved to progress and some people are too vigilant in forcing nothing but gnar. Neither is good for the sport whether you're 20 years in or 20 days in. Veterans help and teach the newbs and newbs ask for help and follow some veterans down some slightly more advanced trails. Nobody wants the sport to get watered down. *Just my opinion Wink *

Eh, its two different types of riding. Lift serviced bike parks are always going to be buttery smooth with no actual technical skills involved aside from knowing how to hit a jump. That's fine with me because bike parks were only exclusively gnarly or tech/natural early on before flow trails came about. Simply put- if you're going to a bike park aiming to ride techy/natural stuff then you're doing it wrong... or you're going to Whistler.

OK, not trying to piss anyone off, just my a*shole opinions - here we go again...

Eh, I get it...bike park ≠ trail riding. Just think it's a shame to remove so many natural features, rocks, roots, and to make the trail so wiiiiiiiiiiide. Mountain biking is supposed to be rugged, hard, and challenging (that is something that should be highlighted to those looking to enter our lil sport- not minimized to increase the market for the big brands)....make ride around options whilst maintaining the natural chunky shit to show the newbs what they should be working up to.

This is probably why I don't dig most parks. It's completely different than single track riding or secret spots. I'll never be a storm trooper wearing a coordinated flouro kit, just a random dude wearing OLD ragged non Mtb specific clothes so that I can afford my bike which costs more than my car.

Rubberside down putos.

@ledude I'm assuming your name is in reference to THE dude, so I made this up real quick: www.pinkbike.com/photo/12461442

If you've ever been to Mtn Creek you will understand why this is a good trail to have. That close to NYC they get a ton of first time riders. Seen plenty of people there with Wilson's and I-9's out to give it a try. Looks like a good warm up though. Props to the trail crew!

different people enjoy different type of trails, while some people enjoy flowy and gromed trails, other people enjoy natural featured trails, some people enjoy all kinds, there isn't really any rules as of "how mountain biking should be".
  • 1 0
biggest issue with this trail is that you can't ride out the stigmata roller anymore...granted, the wood on that is getting pretty sketchy but that roller is probably the sickest thing at creek and this kills the line out of it.
  • 1 0
Skiierman! I hear what you're saying but we've actually got a ton of techy/natural trails! (I would say a majority actually when compared to flowy jump trails). This trail was built exclusively for beginners to have an easy way down the bottom half of the mountain. You gotta come back east one of these days and come shred!
  • 1 0
@hatton I haven't been up there is a few weeks. Where exactly is this new section? It's difficult to tell from the videos.
  • 2 0
@KottonGin - you got half of the reference...yes, half homage to THE dude...also an homage to the tank of a bike the 24 ledude - fcdn.mtbr.com/attachments/downhill-freeride/271781d1181771569-24-le-dude-frame-24-ledude_profil.gif.

I've faved your foto....=)

PWUUALLLL!!! Oh yeah I don't doubt it at all. My point was that bike parks are heading into the direction of flow/jump trails and if you're heading to any bike park, you shouldn't expect most of the trails to be tech. It would be like getting disappointed because he went on an XC ride and there wasn't enough DH. BTW heading back to NH!
  • 2 0
@ledude Glad you got the demeanor of the comment/pic, was definitely a friendly gesture! I totally missed the 24bikes reference. Same company with the devil head mascot that did the tank of a hardtail the leToy. Never owned a leToy but damn DJ hardtails have come a long way.

New riders should bushwack their own trails on full rigid bikes like we did in the 80s n 90s. Ride open slopes with hidden water bars and gopher holes. I look forward to adding some groomed runs into my mix on the few days I get to go DH.
  • 18 1
thank you trail crew for your hard work on this trail and the updates on the rest. you guys have been very busy this year and it shows by how good the trails looks.
  • 15 0
This is clearly stated as a "Beginner trail"! People can't just start off on Ripper!
  • 8 4
This trail is too heavy for me. Is there an easier option I can learn on?
  • 4 1
half these guys talking shit wont hit ripper, 99, bmw, jack, outlaw.
  • 1 0
@Allmountin - your local neighbourhood should have a wide selection of sidewalks, ranging from purple squares to double pink diamonds.,
  • 16 1
All the hardcore bitches on the PB forum can be a special kind of stupid. IT'S A GREEN TRAIL.
  • 14 1
hopefully this means no more smoothing out/de-rocking good trails, i enjoy the new drop into tempest but i personally liked it better when the bottom before tombstone was natural.
  • 7 0
Yes I will agree I do miss the the chunder in tempest..... But the amount a speed is just as fun!
  • 17 3
Back in my day we didn't have trails. We rode through bushes and over jagged rocks and off cliffs, on fully rigid bikes, with wooden tires, up hill both ways.
  • 9 4
 sorry your day sucked
  • 11 1
For all the haters, you obviously don't know MCBP. For rookies, kids, tourists, Etc, there is only 1 easy trail from the top to the bottom. That's it. So that forces anyone who wants to ride chill, warm up, practice skills, etc. to share trail with the aforementioned groups, which frankly is semi dangerous. Not only will it take traffic off the "real trails" but also improve the quality of these trails since he brake dragging slow riders will likely take the new trail.
From mid-mountain to the bottom, the "easy" trail Domboo is not all that easy once you consider a beginners skill set.
And there's plenty of gnarly trail on creek, more that enough to keep experienced riders excited. Ripper!!!!
  • 15 3
Cmon guys. Clearly this is the perfect trail for a World Cup race! #CreekUCIDH2016

Flow isn't just for beginners. I've been riding natural trails since 1988. Now my battered body somehow made it to 50 and I love a fun, flowing trail. Ride what you want and let others enjoy what they want.
  • 2 0
 That's what I'm talkin about...
  • 10 2
are there any jumps or is the whole thing a smooth fireroad?
  • 3 0
Judging by the name I don't think the jumps if any are big.....
  • 14 1
 green·horn (grēn′hôrn′)
n.
1. An inexperienced or immature person, especially one who is easily deceived.
2. A newcomer, especially one who is unfamiliar with the ways of a place or group.
  • 4 2
yeah but I mean small jumps make things more fun for a beginner too, maybe even rollers beginners can have a ton of fun pumping into, but fun for experienced riders to double
  • 2 0
I agree ctmtb98 - it should be a Beginner/learner trail - they make the things wide enough, for a few small drops, jumps etc... Tell me what kid doesn't love jumping his bike at any age. My kids would have been bored to death on this. Then they go to a more advanced trail, and find it's difficult - no progression from most beginner to intermediates.
  • 2 0
There are plenty of options to ride where the trail is easy and there are beginner/small jumps. This is not that trail
  • 1 0
Optional features like tables and hips that let you up your ability and comfort level gradually would be cool.
  • 8 0
I feel more no gnar hate is on the way...
  • 7 0
Would be a good warm up to get your day started.
  • 6 0
Beginner trail is fine, but why does it have to be so wide..?...seems like a waste of man hours.........
  • 2 0
I don't get the negative comments. Here's a bike park with a trail crew who worked their butts off to open a trail that can help to get more people into riding mountain bikes and there are "riders" who don't like the idea? Hmm... I wish there was a trail like this when I started riding mountain bikes.

Keep up the fantastic work, MCBP Trail Crue!
  • 1 0
 Thanks @Ferds
  • 1 0
Keep up the good work guys and this looks like a fun warm up lap. There are plenty of other trails if you are not into buffed out trails , plus as someone mentioned earlier it keeps the little kids and beginners out of danger to themselves and others. Every mountain bike park will have trails that are from beginners to expert, otherwise it would be very stupid on their end.
  • 8 4
Freeride ain't dead!! But it sure seems singletrack trails are!! What is with everything sidewalk wide or bigger?
  • 6 1
It is a green trail not a black diamond. It is for beginners but doesn't mean everyone can't have fun on it
  • 4 1
 Maybe its dual purpose=4across racing.
  • 1 2
That would be great but unfortunately that won't happen. Wish even a DS course.
  • 7 2
I guess I missed the part where it said this beginner trail was replacing all other trails on the mountain.
  • 2 3
For all you bitches complaining about no single track, take your trail bikes and drive 20min to Wayway, get your out of shape asses kicked seat bouncing down those trails, then come back and take your rightful place on Greenhorn. Then someday maybe you'll be able to ride the rest of what's at Creek.
  • 5 0
 Haha!! Yeah us bitches!!
  • 4 0
"What is with everything sidewalk wide or bigger?"

because the width of a mini excavator is about 5 feet. They make narrower machines, but they don't do nearly as much work. Its a trade-off in trail building productivity vs trail width when it comes to machine made trail.
  • 4 1
blast-off is correct. Our machine is actually just under 7' wide... We plant grass seed on the entire trail surface with the intent on a singletrack line being burned in. This trail will not look nearly as wide by the end of Summer.
  • 4 1
All you guys Talking Shit smh, this is the perfect type of trail to bring my 5 year old son and 13 year old daughter to ride at.
  • 6 1
 yeah... hence the name "greenhorn".

dang, never thought I'd see so many whiners within a group of such free thinking people. most bikers I know are... socially adaptive, underground, subcultural, free thinkers.
  • 1 0
No way dude, your 5 year old should be learning on technical single track, on a hard tail. No machined trails or rear suspension until he turns 30.
  • 1 0
well, I guess it sounds proper, when I was kid we were riding trails on BMX... and I didn't consider a full squish until about 35. but, what's wrong with a nice groomed trail, where the chance of injury is greatly reduced? not everybody is trying to become the next tinker juarez.
  • 1 0
Are some riders out there thinking that making our sport more inclusive somehow hurts the sport? Get over yourself. People will still think you're cool and core, when you tell them you ride harsher trails than that. If you're upset or offended by any honest enjoyment of any trail or riding, you don't get the spirit of what we do.
  • 3 0
I bet the braking bumps will be unbearable within a week. Regardless, sick build and I can't wait!
  • 4 0
did you plant grass on the trail on purpose?
  • 4 0
You had me at two mile downhill.
  • 2 1
windham's new flow trails are both 3 miles long
  • 1 2
That's why they didn't get a WC race for 2016, every trail there is a flow trail
  • 1 0
@dchill Windham? You mean the place with the only World Cup DH track in the states? I rode their Citizens DH trail and that aint no sleeper either. 2 flow, 2 gnar.
  • 1 0
then how come they lost the bid again if it's a wold cup caliber track?
  • 2 0
They didnt lose the bid, it was the UCI's doing.
  • 1 0
From what I was told UCI wanted a more difficult track. They were afraid that with such a fast track athletes would be seriously injured
  • 2 0
Ripping roots out makes me wanna cry Frown
  • 1 0
Now rallying up that trail in a side-x-side would be so fun!
  • 1 2
That is the most ridiculous thing I have ever seen! DH bikes are you serious...? You should be on a tri-cycle or an e-bike on that sidewalk lol
  • 6 9
Sweet looking trail. Not sure why the frack there's a train of dh bikes going down it though.

"Sic DH shred on that flow trail brah...." said nobody ever.

I welcome your feedback.
  • 10 1
Who cares what they're riding? The riders in the vid are actually the trail crew responsible for constructing this trail. Most of them do not have multiple bikes, some don't even own their own bicycles and simply rip around on our fleet of rentals. We thought it would be cool to show the guys enjoying the fruits of their labor prior to opening to the public. Sorry it offended ya!
  • 4 2
Such a stupid, cunty comment Wasatch
  • 2 0
Honestly that should be called a road not a trail
