AUS-pocalypse Now - WC XC Finals Photo Epic

by Matthew DeLorme
It's been a wild week in Australia. We arrived to find a lush jungle and monsoon rains of biblical proportions. The pits had more mud than a tractor pull arena. It was all slipping, sliding, and fighting the elements. This has been one of the toughest World Cups for everyone involved (including our camera equipment). Come Saturday, the rains had subsided and it was amazing just how quickly things dried out. By Sunday, there were but a few patches of water left pooling on the course, and tires could finally roll without getting caked with 10 extra pounds of mud. Notably absent was Nino Schurter, as he was off road racing. There were solid performances by Aussie favorites and AUS National Champs, Bec Henderson and Dan McConnell, who finished tenth and fourth, respectively. At the end of the weekend, there were no reports of anyone succumbing to poisonous snake or spider bites, nor where there reports of people consumed by crocodiles. Just a bunch of really damp, smelly clothes that are in bad need of washing and camera gear that is in desperate need of some tender loving care.

They are absolutely bananas for Dan McConnell and Bec Henderson down here.

Despite all the stories we have heard about how dangerous things are in the jungle we ve seen plenty of folks walking about throughout he undergrowth and climbing trees with bare feet and and not a care in the world.

I have a lot of respect for XC. These courses are almost as challenging as the downhill courses, plus they still have massive climbs to do as well. These guys and gals are in ridiculous physical and mental condition to even do these races.
  • 30 1
True this - that shot of Eva Lechner at the top looks as gnarly as an DH I've ever done.
  • 8 0
Very well said Sax. Just looking at these photos and I've seen how gruelling XC can be. Without a doubt these people are within the fittest in the world. 28 Wins for Absalon, The guy is a machine !!! Congrats to him.

That is a gnarly course, Respect

Scrolling so fast looking for Emily.
  • 2 4
Gah! Why are they riding hard tails?!?! Don't 100mm travel bikes pedal pretty good nowadays? Insane.
  • 80 5
It would be interesting to see more side-shots of the racers, so we could see the type of bike and componentry they're riding. How about mixing it up a little from the standard head on "determined racer face" pics?
  • 14 0
Im no pro, but i bet it's pretty tough to get clean side shots at the speeds they are riding.
  • 16 2
Because faces of pain tell a story, not Specialized or Scott decals?
  • 4 2
It's not the bike it's the rider.
  • 3 3
Yes, but enough of the same pic over and over again, more than a few and it turns cliche. Give us a few then mix it up. It's not that hard to get a decent side shot, particularly if they're climbing, and especially if you have a half-decent grasp of your camera. The old "profile of a grimace of pain" is just as evocative as the full frontal. I could care less about the decals, but with the front view, you can't even tell basic stuff like wheel size, drive train configuration, hardtail vs suspension.....not simple decal details but fundamental ride set-ups.
  • 9 11
"Not-the bike, the rider." What a firking ingenious and well-thought out original concept. That's never been said ever before. Pat yourself on the back da Vinci. How about, it's the bike AND the rider, and it would be nice to get a little insight on both. S'all.
  • 2 0
cerealkilla, I hear ya dude. Went back over the photos from this piece and you're right, they are all pretty much the same. It's just lazy editing. Like you, I would also like to see a good profile shot of the bike, get an idea of what makes them so special, different to my old trail beast.
  • 26 0
Absalon is such a beast! I couldn't believe how he was clawing his way back to the front after he flatted. Well deserved win for Julien.
  • 4 0
ya id love to learn about his nutrition...crazy looking veins there!

flag ThirdderivativeS (Apr 27, 2014 at 17:07) (Below Threshold)
Claws his way back in WC race after flatting. Totally not doping, never.
  • 5 0
His wheel change took maybe 30 seconds max and was passed by only a few guys in that span. Its not like he came back from the flat and had to make up 10 minutes. There was very little opportunity to pass on this course and he was able to hammer by guys on the climbs at just the right moment. It was very impressive to watch.
  • 1 2
Fair enough on the context, still don't believe he is clean. 30 seconds plus spots is a lot to make up, nobody in a WC race is going to move over so you can go right by. Glad to see this get coverage.
  • 5 2
But ThirdderivativeS does raise the topic of doping in XC - which seems to largely go unmentioned in mountain biking. According to Michael Rasmussen's book, Yellow Fever, all the top pro XC guys have been doping for ages. Not trying to be a hater, just realistic. Look at the XC pros that have gone on to success in road cycling: Ryder Hesjedal, Michael Rasmussen, Cadel Evans, Tom Danielson, Floyd Landis...four of those five (the exception being Cadel Evans) have admitted to, or been busted for doping. Just sayin'. And where was Schurter this weekend during an XC World Cup race? Road biking? "The average salary of a UCI ProTeam rider (road) was €264,000 in 2012"
  • 1 0
Togeone, Thank you! This was largely my point.
  • 1 1
but thirdderivatives raises the topic of doping in XC and not in DH. This means xc hating.
Oh and xc racing and road racing are really not the same thing; not the same exercise duration, not the same muscles involved, and shifting bewteen climbing and downhill are more frequent in xc.
  • 1 0
I did not bring up doping in DH because this is not a DH racing story. It is about XC which is what I race (both short track and marathon) and enjoy most. Thanks.
  • 1 0
I don't see what kind of drug could be used in ecksee. Steroids are for big muscle (it would match better for dh i think), and EPO is used for exercise with long duration like 4 or 5 hours (and long climbing in altitude) like road racing.
(+ I don't really like guys accusing someone of doping without any proof)
  • 1 0
I don't know much about the specifics of doping, but, this is from Michael Rasmussen about Seamus McGrath, Chris Sheppard and Ryder Hesjedal, in 2003, as XC mountain bikers:
“They stayed for a fortnight. I trained with them in the Dolomites and taught them how to do vitamin injections and how to take EPO and Synacthen.”
Rasmussen claims the riders left with haematocrit values of over 48%, close to the limit of 50% and achieved excellent results.
“Chris Sheppard was sixteenth at the World Championships, Seamus McGrath was sixth or eight...and Ryder Hesjedal finished second. Hesjedal would have won Olympic gold if he hadn’t punctured just before the finish. In 2012, after a number of good years on the road, he won the Giro d'Italia.”
  • 1 0
hum, i hope these things are far from mtb nowadays

black and white holeshot pic: looks like there are some serious problems on the right...
  • 5 0
Haha I didn't catch that the first time.
  • 1 0
It looked like one of the guys during the start tagged the wall with his handlebars and, well, you saw the outcome.
  • 15 0
Interesting that Gould is running a dropper.
  • 1 0
yeah, like the only person running a dropper
  • 4 0
I was just going to ask if anyone else caught that! I think riding xc with a dropper would be sweet, but I wonder what the weight penalty is. 200-300 grams or so?
  • 4 2
Weight Installed (cables, remote, fluid) is actually upwards of 650 grams!
  • 1 0
That can't be the net weight difference. I put lighter wheels on my XC bike AND a Giant Switch and came out UNDER the original weight. And my lighter-than-stock wheels are not super light.
  • 3 0
Reverb non Stealth 31,6 x 420 complete with remote etc. = 550g, Stealth is about 60g heavier.
New Ultimate Carbon 31,6 x410 complete =130g
So u have around 420g weight difference.

Lets get some video footage of these re-occurring tech sections on the xc courses!
  • 10 0
Yeah I'd love to see how these folk are riding through them, their line choices and style for getting through tech sections on saddle-up big-wheel hardtails.
  • 1 0
Get the footage rights and you can, otherwise ^^^
  • 16 2
More Batty and less of everyone and everything else.
  • 10 0
Emily always wins, no matter where she finishes!
  • 2 0
I find jolanda neff or maja w. equally attractive
  • 6 1
 You shut your whore mouth!
  • 2 0
Julien is a looker, def bone if I was a chick
  • 5 0
I couldn't believe it when I saw the majority of the riders riding hardtails down those rock gardens... Makes me re-think my "necessity" for a long travel bike.
  • 1 0
Just took my freshly built steel hardtail out today and I totally agree. I plowed through the same rock gardens as on my 160mm travel Kona and barely noticed.
  • 1 0
Well, now that 160 forks weigh close to 4lbs, ill take it.
Sure I can ride the same stuff on a 130 bike but def not same pace/control as 150-160ish
  • 1 0
There is a point to that.....though the setup needs to be dialed.
  • 5 0
So XC, DH and Enduro are all the same thing as I suspected. XC you were lycra. DH a full face helmet. And you do Enduro cause that's just so cool.
  • 5 0
XC - No visor. Enduro - small visor. DH - Visor the size of a big rigs bug screen!
  • 5 0
I see Pom Pon is a XC fan. Third on right from the swiss flag in the pic of Absalon crossing the line.
  • 2 0
Wow, that's a good catch man. Nice observation.
  • 2 0
They are secret lover, it's the kind of love that trancends the wheel size debate.
  • 1 0
Sorry guys, no kiss and tell Wink

So stoked for Ems….. hells yeah Batty Canadian pow!!!! Not to be a flag flogger or anything but the lady can fu*&in ride. Pretty cool she wears the maple leaf on her sleeve. I wish I was half as wicked as she is.
  • 2 0
The flag on the sleeve indicates she's '13 CDN XC champ. Same for all XC & DH nat champs.
  • 1 0
Look at Absalon's arms/forearms… no fat, here, even compared to the other pro riders! BTW, Nino Schurter is getting ready for the Tour de Romandie (road race), which starts this week.
  • 1 0
The most interesting point is the adjustable seatpost that G.Gould has used!! (can be seen on the photo). Things seem to be changing in XC mentality...grams for descending skills
  • 2 0
saw the whole action.I want whatever absalon is taking! He's such a monster!
  • 3 1
What's the deal with Schurter doing road races rather than world cup xc? Already conceding to Absalon?
  • 5 0
Road racing is where the money is.
  • 2 0
There's nothing to concede, nino has nothing to prove. The guy is also into enduro and road cycling. Kulhavy or Sauser both race road, from time to time. And then there's the base training which is best on road..
  • 1 0
Given Schurter's accomplishments in the World Cup, I'm sure he feels that he has the flexibility to do some of the other things he wants to do.
  • 3 0
It's a long way to go to Australia so he's riding some road races at home for Orica Green Edge. He's already done the Cape Epic this season and will race XC all year. Just how he decided his program should be and most XC racers ride some road in the season. He'll also ride some Enduro. Mixing it up!
  • 1 0
What the hell has happened to Fontana? He got a bronze medal in the Olympics for pete's sake, why is he not getting results anymore?
  • 1 0
Dude, think. They train to peak at the Olympics for those years, not for the 2nd WC race so early in the season.
  • 2 0
Nice pictures. That's why I love XC.
  • 2 0
Last Pic.... EMC lol.....;p Einstein's Theorem to Predict the Winner!!! jk
  • 1 0
sure looks like a lot of bar top controls/levers in the pic with Georgia Gould.
  • 1 0
Looks like a dropper post on Georgia 's bike , isn't it ??? Proof if it has to be made that this XC was pretty well DH orientated
  • 1 0
Typo on the bit about Nino not being there.

Also, Nino raced road instead? What a major let down from my favorite rider.
  • 1 0
Still can't believe these guys aren't using dropper post and tackling the dh part of the course.
  • 1 0
That's usually an indication of a good xc course.
  • 1 0
Black and white pics always look cooler.
  • 1 0
So intense and competitive. Looks great.
  • 1 0
 Where's Kulhavy?
  • 1 0
 10'th.
