Reaching the Boiling Point: Lenzerheide XCO World Cup, Elite Men and Women

After the thrashing the XC racers gave themselves at Worlds last week, they were at it again here in Lenzerheide this weekend. This time, they were racing at 1,500 meters of elevation and like last year at Lenzerheide, it was hot. The forecast was for thundershowers today, but they never materialized which meant racers were out in the blazing heat and powdery dust putting themselves well into the hurt box. Ice was in high demand to keep cool during warm up, and the call-up boxes were nearly completely covered by umbrellas.

Jenny Rissveds has had an impressive season so far, and today she took her first win as a pro. Rissveds passed Annika Langvad on the last lap after leading for most of the race. Jolanda Neff had a tough time here last year but redeemed herself today on home soil taking third place. Nino Schurter played a little cat and mouse with Kulhavy on the opening lap, but then turned up the gas and took off for the rest of the race passing a few back markers in the process. Julien Absalon took second for the men and Maxime Marotte continued his top-notch season with another third place finish. Now that the dust has settled the racers can take a few weeks off before MSA and then it's off to the games.

A whip like that on the last lap, after the effort a race like that takes; yah, I'd call that confidence!!! Schurter is the boss... I don't think I can whip at all with my seat cranked up like that...lol

Schurter throws better whips on his XC bike with the seat jacked up than most of us on our dh rigs, respect!
  • 14 0
 i can't even whip! Frown

Great. Some ass clown complains about there being too many Batty pictures in the last set and now we don't get any. Thanks a lot, ass clown.

Look on the bright side, we got pictures of Jenny Rissveds now.

LOL... was wondering where she was!

@pedrocaio182: Damn, how did I miss her? Google images first pictures is ridiculous.

We did get one pic of America's Emily Batty in training (Kate Courtney) in the U23 photos. Emily finished Top 10 and her fans want to see her!

I can climb 1500m and still whip it better than you..... Schurter

How Nino doesn't get people paying attention to xc I will never know...so awesome!

 I'm loving this coverage!

Yeah the whip is sick but I recommend watching Nino on lap 3-5. It's totally ridiculous how fast he's going up/down and especially through the flat tech.
  • 3 0
Yeah he has some insane flow. Watching him reel the leaders back in after that clip-out during the start was pretty impressive too. Dude is (almost) untouchable.

Much respect to Absalon and Marotte too. I think Absalon knew he wasn't on Nino's pace that day, but his last couple laps were beastly. Felt awful for Marotte as Absalon just blasted right by him - he put on one hell of an effort and we're going to see a lot more of him in the future.

XC = represents youth and spirit , THE BEST part of my life...
  • 2 0
yup. i spent my late teens / early 20's racing XC at National Level = great memories

then DH and FR came along and changed everything!

 Holy XC whip Batman!
  • 8 0
 N1NO's mid-race whips.
  • 4 0
i think XC riders deserve way more respect. i wouldn't ride half they stuff they do on a hardtail, let alone without a dropper!
  • 6 0
 N1NO is the XC KING~
  • 2 1
Nino is a hell of a rider, imperial on climbs and the best on the downhills but...

MY GOD that guy is cold and not funny !! A true Swiss man.

The best of the best would be Schurter on the track and Kulhavy/Fontana/Fumic/Hermida (pick the one you like) when the race is over to make a bit of a show... Smile
  • 3 0
If he can do that on a xc race and a xc bike just imagine the day that he decides to go Enduro....... Cheers
  • 4 0
 N1no! best!!! Smile
  • 3 0
 LOOK AT THE WHIP!
  • 2 0
Would love to see more coverage of XC racing like this!

Does anyone know what the cooling fluid is that nino is putting on?
  • 5 0
 It's a bit jizzy ain't it.
  • 1 0
@deepcovedave: Thats what I was thinking but thought someone might actually know
  • 4 0
Clearly it is freshly flown in milk from Lewis Road Creamery...
  • 2 5
Nino can change the sport - make it more aggressive so everyone sees the advantage a FS and dropper, he rides a 27.5 wheel set, now all he needs to do is get in some baggies and he'll be a rock star. (Okay I know he already is)
  • 10 0
Hes on a 29er and rides a rigid post
  • 9 0
Except he doesn't use a dropper and now he rides a 29er.
  • 1 1
@vRidge: Maybe not this course but he's used the dropper on other courses. When did he go 29? He said he preferred the 27.5 because it was more agile.
  • 1 0
 Where is the rainbow Jersey?
  • 1 0
He's the point leader in the world cup standings that's why he didn't wear the rainbow jersey, same as Langvad in the women's race.
  • 2 1
 no emily batty
  • 3 6
Whip vs. Scrub? Arguably both have a place, but a scrub that much more impressive and practical.
  • 1 3
He had moved back to 29er, and left the kid wheels behind for now.
  • 3 0
Seems like he could win on 24" wheels. I watched the race on TV and all I can say is wow....he is dominate.
