Gnralized hit the nail on the head. Moto shops make single digit % markup on bikes. Take a snowmobile for example - the sell for 11k and the dealer cost on them is around 10,600. Motorcycles are even less. I used to work at FLY Racing in college trying to get the MTB department off the ground. FLY is a Moto brand and structured their pricing off moto shops - 35% margin. Most Bicycle shops wouldn't even talk to me since we weren't keystone (50% margin).

Press Release: REI is Exclusive Retailer for Ghost Cycles in USA
i HATE REI. they support closing down the outdoors to dirt bikes and snowmobiles. used to buy a lot of stuff there and now i avoid it at all costs. only thing i go there for now is rope and nylon webbing if i cant make it to the local supply house before they close just to be clear - REI SUCKS!!!!!!!

that would be awesome to see Gwin on Intense. Doubt they could afford to pay the big bucks that specialized if shelling out though ...

Taxes are based in overall net income. As a racer I'm sure they have a TON of travel expenses. Every meal they eat, every thing they buy can be written off as an expense. For all but the top riders (who get absolutely everything paid for) I'm sure they'll be able to keep most all of the prize money.
