100% Speedcraft Sunglasses - Review

Ride 100 Speedcraft Sunglasses review

The 100% Speedcraft sunglasses were a common sight on the enduro and DH race circuits this past season due to their distinctive and slightly outlandish look that gave photographers a good excuse to zoom in on athletes wearing the new shades. The Speedcraft's unique shape is partially based on the designs found in the company's goggle line, giving the glasses a wide field of vision and a large amount of coverage to keep dust or mud at bay. To help prevent fog or condensation from developing on the single lens, there are two small openings between the lower portion of the lens and frame junction that are meant to help improve airflow.

There are six different possible frame colors: orange, red, yellow, cyan, black, and gunmetal, along with a wide array of lens tints. Each pair of sunglasses comes with either a mirrored or a smoke colored lens, plus an extra low-light lens. In addition to the extra lens there's a slightly smaller nose pad to help fine tune the glasses' fit, a cloth bag, and a zippered hard case. MSRP is $195 USD for the mirrored lens option shown, or $175 for the smoke colored lens. There's also an SL version of the Speedcraft available that has a smaller lens profile and forgoes the air scoops at the bottom of the lens. www.ride100percent.com / @ride100percent

Performance

I ended up using the grey low-light lens for most of my time with the Speedcrafts, since I mainly ride in thickly forested areas with more shade than sun. The grey tint proved to be a good match for these conditions, allowing for enough visibility in the darker portions of the forest, while also minimizing the amount of squinting that occurred when popping out from the trees into clearings with direct sunlight. The Speedcrafts did fog up slightly in a few instances on long steamy climbs, but the fog stayed mainly at the very upper portion of the lens, and as soon as the trail pointed downhill and the airflow increased the fog disappeared.

Compared to a more traditionally shaped set of sunglasses the amount of extra protection provided by the Speedcraft is instantly noticeable, making them a good choice for rides where the amount of flying trail debris is high. Swapping lenses is a quick and simple procedure, and while the shape of the lens means you probably wouldn't carry a spare in your pack, making a last minute change before heading for the trails is easily accomplished.

Even on rougher sections of trail the sunglasses remained securely in place thanks to the shape of their arms, which extend past the ears and slightly curve towards the back of the head. Although this length does help keep them from moving around, it can pose a problem with some helmet designs depending on the positioning of the retention system - there was a degree of interference with the Troy Lee A1 and Kali Maya, but I had better luck when running them with a Giro Montaro. In any case, bringing your helmet along when shopping for a new set of sunglasses is highly recommended.

Pinkbike’s Take:
bigquotesI'll admit, the look of the Speedcraft sunglasses isn't one that I'd typically gravitate towards, but they do stand out from the crowd, and riders that harbor rock star tendencies will surely revel in the extra attention that results from donning these shades, while also benefiting from the excellent field of view and protection that they provide. - Mike Kazimer

...Now how do vents at the bottom of the lens improve ventilation over leaving out that material entirely?
  • 7 0
If there wasn't material down there, they couldn't call it a vent! It would be free air. NOW, it's special 100% air because it has passed through the Stargate that is the 100% frame vent.
  • 2 0
Hi @Bluefire, those lower air scoops increase ventilation to reduce moisture on the lens and keep your skin cool, limiting fog issues.
  • 2 0
And you can stick your weed in it dude.
  • 2 0
notice the vents are "intended" to improve airflow.

I have been running these shades for over a year and LOVE them. At first people looked at me funny, but I would never hesitate to rip them off my face and hand them to any haters to try on. EVERY SINGLE TIME they would laugh, ry them on and say "daaaayyyuummm these are great" the wide range view is incredible. Better than goggles.

We couldn't say it any better! Thanks @livehardriderharder, it only takes one ride to be convinced!

After nearly twenty years, I finally found the best sunglasses for mountain biking: protective, light, solid and great field of view . These sunglasses are the perfect complement of my Racecraft googles.
  • 2 0
How about some decent Px sunglasses for those of us that are forced to wear contacts on a dusty, dirty, gritty trail. Not the $500 ones that I'll break in a year.

How on earth all of these horrible fashion looks are coming back (mom jeans, these glasses, leopard tights for girls and camo).
These are the type of item that are hot this year and just as quickly they became popular they will go out of fashion where they belong.

  • 7 3
 I dig them. Gotta have.
  • 11 2
You are looking at the same pictures as the rest of us aren't you?
  • 9 3
@Kiwiplague You clearly take your eyewear too seriously, these glasses are ridiculous that's the point. They're kinda awesome and they have a shitload of coverage too, its almost like wearing goggles.
  • 6 0
Not at all, I'm guilty of wearing some pretty hideous eyewear myself over the years (was there any other kind in the 90's?), but if you want goggle sized eyewear, then get goggles. At least they don't usually charge you $195 for the privilege.
  • 2 0
I have a pair and gotta say are amazing. Yes they are a little expensive but you're paying for that 100% name. (which i dont mind doing as I love the brand) The long lens version is so good and totally blocks the sun out even on the sides and the lens is such good quality so no more squinting on trails or road rides.

That said some of my mates think they are stupid, but I like them so am not that fussed.
  • 1 0
@ joepuddle. I know, right? i have a pair too and paid a bit more than retail. Well, actually a lot more than MSRP lol! I saw them and knew the name and knew they'd be wick. i had to order from overseas as nothing available in North America when I needed them many months ago. After taxes and import duties to Canada I'm into mine for about $380USD (~$9000CAD), but they are the best sunglasses I've ever owned.

You will never see these at a downhill event.
  • 1 0
@Nobble nailed it. Pretty much all the benefits of the goggles with the breathing advantage of the sunglasses.

Previous posts have got it wrong. These are Oakley BLADES. Not factory pilots, not radars Smile

 But they're still cool!
  • 2 0
Pretty sure these are the same shape as the Pilots, the Blades were much straighter along the lower edge. Sadly I'm old enough to have bought both aforementioned glasses new. Phil Anderson was the pioneer for the Pilots cyclingtips.com.au/2014/10/a-brief-history-of-cycling-sunglasses

Uh, No. The bump across the brow is hideous and pointless. This better not become a trend. Let's just say Moseley, Rude, Graves or Clementz don't wear these. If a buddy showed up with these on, I guarantee I'd keep him behind me for the whole ride, so it's good they keep dust and dirt out of your eyes!

A review for glasses should tell if they scratch easy or not.
  • 3 0
Hi @Manx, all our lenses have the Hydrophobic and Oleophobic exterior lens coating which repels water and oil. This specific coating also improve the durability of the lens and its resistance to scratches.
  • 1 1
But if I clean them with my shirt whilst some dust is still on the lens it will scratch anyways, isn't it?
  • 3 0
@Tamasz: The Speedcraft comes with a handy microfiber bag. If you have any dirt or sand residues, please rinse them first then dry, and clean all traces with the microfiber bag.
