17 Race Bikes - RockShox Enduro Challenge

by Mike Kazimer
The first stop of the RockShox Enduro Challenge took place this weekend in Mt.Buller, Australia, and a number of high profile riders, including a few who are typically found on DH tracks, showed up to participate. Photographers Jason Stevens and Jaime Black were on the ground to document the race rigs of the pros.

Sam Hill
RockShox Enduro challenge
It will take more than an enduro race to convince Sam Hill trade out his flat pedals for clips. His Nukeproof Mega AM is rolling on a Mavic CrossMax XL wheelset, with his drivetrain, suspension, and brakes handled by SRAM.

Jackson Davis
RockShox Enduro challenge
Specialized's Enduro 650B was a familiar site at the race. Jackson Davis is most often found on the DH circuit, but decided to try his hand at enduro racing for the weekend. His bike is nearly identical to the S-Works version we recently reviewed, except that the stock Slaughter semi-slick rear tire has been swapped out for a Butcher.

Kaine Canan
RockShox Enduro challenge
Kaine's ready for anything with his Fox 36 equipped Rock Mountain Altitude Rally Edition. A thumb remote on the right side of the bars lets him quickly choose between Climb, Trail, or Descend mode on the Fox Float X rear shock.

Chris Panozzo
RockShox Enduro challenge
Chris Panozzo was riding a Santa Cruz Nomad fully decked out with ENVE wheels, RaceFace SixC carbon cranks, and a RockShox Pike up front.

Jerome Clementz
RockShox Enduro challenge
Jerome recently picked up a few new sponsors for the 2015 season. Troy Lee will be providing helmets, while Alpinestars will be taking care of clothing. In addition to his front suspension, brakes, and drivetrain (note the new direct mount front ring) SRAM will also be supplying wheels, and his Cannondale Jekyll will be rolling on Michelin tires.

Ryan DeLaRue
RockShox Enduro challenge
Yep, it's another Enduro, this one equipped with a CaneCreek DBAir. Highlights include a SRAM XX1 drivetrain, ROVAL wheels, RockShox Pike fork, and a Specialized Command Post.

Michael Ronning
RockShox Enduro challenge
Michael Ronning was once a familiar face on the World Cup DH circuit in the late '90s and early 2000s, and he managed to pick up 5 Australian DH championship wins along the way, but now he's trying his hand at enduro racing. His Giant Reign is set up with a DT Swiss XM 1501 wheelset, RockShox Monarch Plus Debonair shock and Pike fork, and SRAM XX1 drivetrain.

Paul van der Ploeg
RockShox Enduro challenge
Mountain bike eliminator world champion, Paul van der Ploeg, stands with his Giant Trance Advanced. He's 6'4" tall, which helps explain the seatpost height. Schwalbe's Rock Razor semi-slick keeps the rolling resistance down, and a RockShox Revelation is matched with a Monarch rear shock.

Mike Jones
RockShox Enduro challenge
Sam Hill's young teammate on the CRC/Nukeproof squad, Mike Jones showed up for some off-season training with his NukeProof MegaAM.

Rick Boyer
RockShox Enduro challenge
One of the few riders not running a dropper post, Rick Boyer's Santa Cruz Bronson wasn't lacking as far as the rest of his components go. The 150mm bike was set up with ENVE wheels, a RockShox Monarch Plus RT3 shock and a Pike up front, SRAM Guide RSC brakes, plus Santa Cruz's own carbon handlebar.

Richie Rude
RockShox Enduro challenge
Richie Rude's stealthy 127mm Yeti SB5c is race ready with a burly build that includes a Fox Float X rear shock and a 36 up front, plus Shimano Saint brakes to keep this freight train under some semblance of control. Maxxis Minions are mounted to DT Swiss wheels, and Thomson handles dropper post duties. A Shimano XTR derailleur and cassette are paired with a Renthal chainring and an e*13 chaiguide.

Jared Graves
RockShox Enduro challenge
RockShox Enduro challenge
Graves also chose to run Yeti's SB5, although his Fox Float X gets the RAD treatment - being the Enduro World Champ has its perks.
RockShox Enduro challenge
Shimano's narrow-wide rings still seem to be a work in progress - Graves was running a BlackSpire chainring to go along with his XTR drivetrain.

Troy Brosnan
RockShox Enduro challenge
Troy Brosnan stands with his SRAM and RockShox equipped Enduro 650B. He'll be clipping into HT's X1 pedals with those Aussie green and gold Specialized SFO shoes.

Matthew Dodd
RockShox Enduro challenge
Matthew Dodd's aluminum 160mm Devinci Spartan is set up with a Magic Mary / Hans Dampf tire combo, and Crank Brothers Mallet pedals. In a combo that's pervasive at this race, a RockShox Pike is found up front, and a Monarch Plus shock is in the rear.

Dean Lucas
RockShox Enduro challenge
More often seen aboard his Devinci Wilson on the World Cup DH circuit, Dean Lucas was also aboard a Spartan for the race.

Graeme Mudd
RockShox Enduro challenge
Another downhiller giving enduro racing a try, and the proud owner of one of the best last names for a mountain bike racer, Graeme Mudd's Orange Five was set up with a Gamut chainring and guide, RockShox suspension, Specialized tires, and a SRAM 10 speed rear derailleur.

Rhys Atkinson
RockShox Enduro challenge
One more Enduro, this one of the big wheeled variety and piloted by Rhys Atkinson, to wrap things up. Roval carbon hoops, a CaneCreek DBInline rear shock, and a whole lot of seatpost showing.

Mike Jones, the man from Wales, runs a jacket racing enduro in the middle of the Aussie summer....
  • 11 3
It was cold today. It made it to 22. Jeans and a jumper weather. Colder in the hills.

But if it reached 22 in Wales it's considered acceptable to walk around with no t-shirt on.

I think it was about 4 degrees up there on Friday. Brrr!

22 degrees in Wales is a heat wave! Old people are told to stay indoors to avoid death by heat stroke.

whats up with his seat height? doesnt look like he'd be able to reach the pedals with the seat that high. and chris panazzos seat is just ridiculous high, guy looks tall as hell but his seat still comes up to his elbows!

What's the big deal? If he was on clips he may have come 3rd!! I'm this day and age racing on flats is a disadvantage. Hence why the vast majority of racers at this level are clipped in. This old obsession with flat pedals is very boring.

Sure I like looking at pretty bikes from a distance, but why bother with the words, why not just give us "everyone is riding whatever their sponsors told them they could ride", and then get into the interesting stuff. We all knew Sam would be on a nukeproof mega, that's a given. I want to know if he runs a DH bar width, I want to know if anyone is running procore, I want to know how many bottomless tokens he has in his pikes. What doesn't provide much interest is describing the picture in front of you, and then showing us the picture anyway! Get out there with a tape measure and some scales. I (don't) pay good money for this service!
  • 2 0
They go into the pits and look for cool black box stuff eventually. Maybe not as thorough as we all night hope, but it's something.
  • 10 0
@L0rdTom - It's still very early in the season, and most racers are running setups that are basically stock builds. The prototypes and special one-off components haven't really emerged yet. Rest assured that as the season progresses we'll be delivering you all the tech-geekery you could possibly want.
  • 34 1
 That rocky mountain. Dang.

  • 10 1
Haha buying bikes when your 6'4 sucks, I look ridiculous riding my new reign, and it's XL. My sis in law actually asked if I could get a bigger size
  • 3 1
Its good to see PVDP out on a longer travel bike. I hope he catches the bug and moves to enduro like Carlson did. Would be great for the format.
  • 10 0
Van Der Pheog and Atkinson look like they have each other's bikes
  • 3 2
I'm confused about the yeti build. Relatively little rear travel with 36s on the front + minions strikes me as strange. I'm not having a go at Richie, Jared or Yeti, I just don't understand why for enduro racing it isn't 150/160mm rear travel like its competitors, especially with the rest of the build being burly. Could anyone enlighten me?
  • 5 5
Same discussion like why slopestyle needs only 100mm travel with big drops.
  • 4 1
That doesn't really do it for me. In slopestyle although the drops are big they have big landings, no other bumps between the big hits and as a result the 100mm can be set up specifically for the big hits. Also slope bikes have more even travel than 127m rear and 160mm (I'm assuming) up front. I'd love to know why.
  • 11 0
Bike company's don't seem to realise that people over 6ft ride bikes. It's the same with DH pants, they just hover round your shins.
  • 10 0
Considering that Jared normal rides the SB6c I'm guessing the terrain here doesn't warrant a bigger travel rear end and they have chosen to go for pedalling performance but keeping the burly front end/build will help when plowing into unknown trails at top speeds.
  • 3 2
I think most SS set-ups range from 80-100mm rear and 80-120mm front. I don't think it'd be too wise to put a 160 fork on a slope style bike.
  • 1 1
No believe me not saying do that!
  • 13 0
When it comes to wheel travel, it's quality over quantity.
  • 4 3
Which side of the bike strikes an object? Front. You can boost over things by preloading the front and not worry about the rear travel so much. Tires are a personal decision. I ride minion exos on my trail bike. Grip>weight for me.
  • 3 1
Paul van der Ploeg´s bike looks like he was doing another race.
All sporting burly tires and stuff, while he´s on a 32 fork, NN+RoRa tire combi, xc-ish stem, no piggy shock, etc Big Grin

Shimano is not doing good with not letting factory riders ride their current group of components. Their new XTR 11s was introduced about a year ago, you can now buy it and yet those guys are running an old 10s group with off brand chainrings? really REALLY bad marketing in my opinion.

  • 6 0
Not really. Haha. There's climbing in the timed stages and it takes more fitness than DH. Brosnan commented on his lungs being shot and legs super sore.
  • 11 2
 no women racing?
  • 5 1
I guess not... Oh, wait. Yes, yes there were! 12 of them, in fact! Shocking. Women riding bikes? Imagine that. In fact, a few of the top elite women had faster times than a few of the elite men.

"Over on the women’s podium Peta Mullens took the win, followed by Brodie Chapman in second, Claire Whiteman in third, Jeromes partner Pauline Dieffenthaler in fourth and Sarsha Huntington in fifth." - Spoke Magazine

I was just thinking the new Yeti's look amazingly ugly. Never was a big fan though my bud likes em.
  • 2 0
slowtime - there is no need to agree, no matter what collective says. I always appreciate people having critical opinions on looks of something, because I work with aesthetics and trying to undertsand people's likes allows me to be better at what I do. For instance I think latest Nomad is well below expectations and most of SC paint jobs/graphics ar on par with Kona from 2005; their matt carbon finish looks like cheap plastic. If I buy carbon I want it to look carbony. If you say something short about what you like and don't like without raving too muc habout it, and someone cuts you off saying: "aesthetic likes are like arseholes, no point of talking about them" then he is highly probably offended that his own "fantastic" sense of aesthetics is being put into question, so it is him insecure and intolerant prick.

Now... how did you like the way I masturbate mentally? This snow must melt down, days gotta get longer damn it! I want to ride! Help meeeee!
  • 1 0
What bikes did you compare it to?
  • 1 0
In terms of encarbonishment of the finish? S-Works spec, Yeti carbon bikes, Capra, my Blur TRc from 2011. At least add a bit of gloss damn it!
  • 1 0
Sorry. My comment was directed at @reformedroadie
  • 1 0
First off, Waki, doesn't a collider have to be circular?
That was the old design.

Funny you mention the Carpa, because you can now get an Alu Capra BIKE for the same less than a SB6 frame.

I was at Outerbike and rode a bunch of bikes. Stumpy EVO, Bronson, Trans Scout, Turner Burner, Ibis HDR, Orbea Rallon, etc. Only the Ibis, which has less travel came close to the balance of plush and pedaling the SB6 did, though a better comparison would have been the SB5, which I could not get my hands on...people were sprinting and lining up for them all day.
  • 4 1
Kudos to all these DHers throwing their hat in the ring. Where are the XC guys? I'd love to see what Nico can do...some of those guys have much more than fitness.

I guess you won't like riding in the winter in Canada then...? At anything lower than -10*C the bike doesn’t work too we'll, but I ride anything higher. I know that the fat tyre gang ride in really cold weather, which is great as they compact the snow for the skinnier tyres.

  • 7 0
but look at the height of that post!!
  • 6 1
I've actually wondered why we don't see more pros opting for a normal post at some Enduro races. If the timed stages are mostly down and rugged, then the ability to put the post up quickly may not be necessary or worth the weight and complication...at the end of the stage, just flip the QR and put it up for the climb.
  • 2 0
@b-mack- That's because there are climbing sections and flat sections that are timed where a dropper is used. Those long stages really tax the riders.
  • 1 0
@dualsuspensiondave Well that just shows how much I know about this Enduro thing. I had no idea there were any timed climbs unless they were small ones in the DH stage. I know some stages have flat sections and for that a dropper make sense, but I guess I naively thought there were some races that were mostly downhill. It seems the format is kinda all over the place still.
  • 1 0
Not separate timed climbs, but in the timed stages. Most timed stages are not all DH. One has to understand that we are talking 25 miles or more of riding with thousands of feet of climbing. This can be 3 to 6 hours on the bike per day racing. There is no power left to stand and mash every uphill section. Being efficient, self sufficient, and other strategies are involved in doing really well.

If you notice the two overall EWS winners were on the new Fox 36 fork. The new Fox is way more adjustable and could be also used for freeride/DH. Pike is still a little lighter but Fox is definitely making a well matched fork. The Fox is tipped a little more to the all mountain to DH, while the Pike is a little more Trail to all mountain. I ride the Pike and have felt the new Fox, I think the Fox is good, but for me I'll ride the Pike. It's all personal preference and a matter of what kind of trails or riding you will be doing. Fox may not pay as much as RS for advertisement, but that doesn't automatically mean they make a product that sucks. RS may have paid more for ads and now you'll see a Pike on most all mountain bikes. It's just the way the industry works, so who knows, maybe next year it'll be all Fox.

Simply by pulling it to the side. It's called Specialized Zee. Side-loading cage. I have it on my SJ FSR and it works.

Rhyn Atkison photo is wrong in so many ways. Seatpost should not be up to your chest. So out of proportion.
