A deep pool of DH talent has gathered in Rotorua as riders use the Crankworx downhill as a chance to sort out the final details of their bikes before the first round of the World Cup. Brook Macdonald had his Session kitted out similarly to the last time we looked it over, but the rear FOX shock is looking more production ready than ever, complete with an orange spring and a new coating for the shock's shaft, as well as new graphics. The RAD labeling is gone, replaced by the DHX2 designation. Macdonald also still had the SRM PowerMeter that he's been running in the off season as a way to measure the progress of his training.

Connor Fearon's sideways airtime scored him a second place result at the Whip Off Contest aboard a prototype 27.5" wheeled Kona. The bike looks similar to the company's 26" Precept 200 model, although the shock is now mounted atop the down tube, rather than on the top tube. RockShox handles the suspension and SRAM takes care of the 7 speed drivetrain, while Stan's Flow rims are shod with Maxxis DHF tires.

Loris Vergier will be racing in the Elite division for 2015, after finishing last season with both the overall Junior World Cup title as well as a convincing victory at World Champs. His Lapierre DH has 210mm of rear travel via a scissor link driven single pivot design, and was set up with a RockShox Vivid Air. Many riders are running spikes like the Schwalbe Dirty Dan that Vergier had on his bike, since there's the chance that the track could turn into a steep and muddy mess. The dirt was relatively tacky for today's practice, but it's been threatening to rain, and it won't take much moisture to upset the balance and make just getting down the hill a challenging feat.

Wyn Masters is a rider to keep an eye on come race day, when he'll be rocketing down the track on his Bulls DH bike. The bike has a high main pivot that's positioned behind, rather than even with, the bottom bracket, a design that creates a rearward axle. This requires an idler pulley to be installed in order to prevent chain growth from affecting the bike's suspension. For those who were wondering, somewhere along the trail today Wyn broke the backing plate and lost the pulley for his chainguide - the lack of a lower pulley wheel isn't on purpose. Schwalbe's Dirty Dan tires and a Marsh Guard front fender ensure that Wyn will be ready if the rain arrives.

And finally, this just in from Eddie Masters (Wyn's brother).

Stay tuned for more bike checks and tech content from Crankworx Rotorua all week long.

Trek: Give brook a new rear triangle with paint that sticks to the frame!
  • 37 2
He's just that fast, he rides the paint off the thing.
  • 15 10
It seems like Trek need some new creatives in the office and as they have managed to come up with a colour scheme that is more boring than last seasons bike. I like that its simple as I think less is more but surely they know there are other colours in the world than shades of Red and Orange.
  • 2 0
i can't wait to see if it becomes available for us!
  • 7 2
Maybe they should give 50 shades of grey a shot
  • 5 1
 Macdonald don't care
  • 32 1
 "SAY NO TO SLOMO"

amen.
  • 5 2
Brook goes so fast the paint just peels off
  • 3 0
The Trek Factory Racing road bike team also has their bikes painted in that exact shade of color as Brook's bike. I wasn't that impressed with the color when I saw it last season, but it has started to grow on me a bit. That being said, it is a very understated paintjob to say the least.

@heavyp - That is last year's bike. It's likely Brook's "home" bike. I believe the 2015 rigs are all red with white logos.
  • 3 0
The "TREK red" coloured bikes look awesome IMO amongst the sea of uncoordinated, tacky, "enduro neon" colourways

session park for brook? looks like a 6er. those chainstays look aluminum to me...
  • 23 2
Orange cream soda flavored coil. Yummy.
  • 12 0
Brook is looking lean and mean. Definitely lost some weight I'd say. This season is going to be incredible!
  • 5 0
Unless a wc rider flats...I hate when runs are ruined by an efn flat.
  • 9 0
Yeah seconded! Although when Gwin rode without a tyre it was one of the highlights of the season!
  • 2 0
he may be leaner, but look at his forearms
  • 2 0
I was just watching the DH practice and Brook was absolutely pinning it! Definitely on a mission this year!
  • 5 0
You can tell Brook is uncomfortable with the photos being taken of his beat up bike, look at his eyes. It's like he was asked to take his shoes off before he could enter a house, and he realized he has a huge hole in the toe of his sock.

Waiting for kona's new downhill bike.
  • 2 1
Is it me or do those MAXXIS Minion DHF tires on Connor Fearon's prototype 27.5" wheeled Kona look a little bit larger? Maybe 2.4?
  • 1 0
surprised that kona went to a swing link for what looks like a new Operator. Also, looks like they are going back to aluminum after carbon.
  • 4 0
Prototypes are always aluminum (except for that YT dirt jumper).
  • 7 1
I'm not a huge fan of the orange coil, but that DHX2 shock looks incredible! Matte black is always a winner...now you just gotta release that Air DH shock we've been seeing with Fairclough....
  • 8 0
It's a Fauxlins I can just imagine all the brand managers screaming about specialized having yellow springs.
  • 7 0
Fox management: "...quick, we need more dials and put them on the side!"

All kidding aside, looks like it's going to be a really good shock.
  • 1 0
Why is the piggyback offset like that? It looks cool, but could it potentially run into frame compatibility issues?
  • 1 0
The dials are offset so it's easier to reach with a tool on some frames.
  • 3 0
 Wyn using XTR rear mech????
Why he's not just using a saint or zee instead??
  • 9 1
Because of bigger chain retention caused by his suspension system i guess.
  • 7 3
every bike on this page is a single pivot.
  • 1 0
 wut?
  • 2 0
it was supposed to be a reply to someone moaning about the lapierre being a single pivot. I mustve clicked in the wrong place tho.
  • 1 0
Brook's tires say "G-Mud" but they absolutely do not look like some standard g-mud's.

more like a mixture between bontragers g5 and some new spike tire

edit: got it, bontrager has some new 650b g-muds, totaly missed that.
  • 1 0
Anyone has a clue where could I get a jersey like Loris Vergier has? I love the LP on it as its my initials Smile Cant see any Laperrie apparel anywhere.
  • 3 0
That Bulls suspension system makes me think about the new Commençal V4...
  • 2 0
Axle paths will be similar, the Commencal system looks tidier to me, and less dirt chucked in some the bearings/rocker. DHV4 must also be at least 500g lighter than the V3, I'd guess?
  • 3 0
I don't know about the weight of that V4, but the low part of the seat-tube will ad some protection for the system.
  • 5 0
 or a canfield jedi?
  • 4 0
Guys......Check out the JEDI, Canfield has been designing and testing rear-ward travel longer than anyone!!, its pure magic on the square-edges!
  • 1 0
Nicolas Vouilloz's VProcess circa 2002: http://ep1.pinkbike.org/p4pb8550408/p4pb8550408.jpg which was, somewhat, an evolved '99 Sunn Radical, Commencal now gone full circle. Dirt Mag's 20 years of DH bike evolution is worth checking out, incidentally.

When was the first Jedi launched?
  • 4 0
The Canfield F1 suspension platform was first used in 1997 and built into the 1999 Big Fat Fatty Fat. 12'' of pure moto deepness!
  • 1 0
It remind me the bike of Nico Vouilloz by BOSS. I don't think that chain so close of the pivot are good.
  • 2 0
The Canfield is a bit different, it doesn't use a single pivot.
Commençal is probably using what Sunn has developed with the Radical. And it looks more compact than the Bulls!
  • 2 0
Extra pulley is mostly to deal with increased chain growth that would otherwise happen with rearward axel path. It works great and had been problem free on my Jedi for 5 years.
  • 2 0
Is it just me or does that third one look like it took a head on collision with a wall?
  • 4 2
New coating on the shock shaft?

I thought Ka$hima was the best!!
  • 2 0
You can't kashima steel. It's a PVD coating
  • 2 0
Euhh ok , so I have probably missed something with that Kona.
  • 1 1
I think that just might be a 27.5" wheeled Kona Suppressor
  • 1 0
A kona suppressor ? never heard of that .. I am lost now haha
  • 1 0
did you mean a 27.5 precept?
  • 3 0
Like I said, a Kona Precept.
  • 3 0
 Loving that Tee!! ;-)
  • 2 0
Its from Loose Riders, they make good stuff
  • 2 0
OMG...This system on the BULLS Bike...
  • 1 0
Looks f** complicated ... and apperently didn't work flawlessly
  • 1 0
Single pivots or four bar. Take your pick. Shows that there isnt one winning combination for DH racing.
  • 2 0
that lapierre is such a good looking bike
  • 2 0
 Go ride
  • 1 0
stupid question but what does a power meter do and how does it help in dh?
  • 1 0
A power meter measures the power that a rider is putting into his pedals, and in extension his drivetrain and wheels. Basically it gives the rider a metric for how hard he working over a period of time. The use of power meters have gained widespread use on the road and limited use on the xc race scene. As for how the use of a power will help for dh racing, it will allow Brook to measure his efforts during the peddling sections of courses and compare them to previous days efforts over the same section. Brook will know if his fitness or efficiency is increasing over the training because his power numbers would be increasing. Hope that helped a little bit

I sure thought that bulls was a gt fury at first glance.
  • 1 0
Anybody know what helmet Loris Vergier is wearing?
  • 1 0
 100%
  • 1 0
"Bulls", short for "Bullshit". That one's quite the junker. o.o
  • 1 0
I like how the Trek looks but I hate that little shock..
  • 2 1
 Session!
  • 3 5
Wtf is bulls? Complete knockoff of a Canfield Jedi.
  • 3 0
And 3 of 4 are using mallets... where's the crampon mags???
  • 4 0
It's not a knockoff in any way, the jedi uses a virtual pivot like santacruz and quite a few others. The bulls uses a high single pivot. The only thing in common is both have rearward travel and both uses an idler to allow for the chaingrowth.
  • 1 0
Love my Jedi but won't call this a knockoff. It's great having all these companies offering variations of every suspension design.
