2014 Race Face Next SL Crank

Race Face has made their flagship carbon fiber Next SL crankset even more versatile for 2014. Their new 'Cinch' interface, an interchangeable 30mm spindle and chainring mounting system, allows for a wide array of possible setup options. Riders will have the freedom to run anything from single, direct mount chain rings to more traditional two and three ring setups. The carbon fiber cranks, which are manufactured in Race Face's Canadian facility, are completely hollow, and use a 30mm diameter aluminum spindle made from an alloy that only recently became available for commercial use and claimed to be 20% stronger than 7050 alloy.

Details
• Intended use: XC Race/Trail/Enduro
• Claimed to be the lightest production crankset on the market
• Removable spider offers the ability to convert between existing chainring standards while remaining flexible to future developments
• Sizes: 170, 175mm
• BB options: BB92, 68/73 BSA, PF30, compatible with 190mm and 165/170mm fatbike standards

• Weights: 175mm, w/o BB - BCD 64/104mm: 535g (22/36T, 24/36T), 540g (24/38T), 585g (22/32/42T, 24/32/42T). BCD 80/120mm: 545g (26/38T), 560g (28/40T). Spiderless direct mount: (26,28,30,32,36,34T) 425g (28T)
• Price: $459.99 USD (armset), $599.99 (2x/3x)

The growing popularity of 1x11 and 1x10 setups spurred Race Face to introduce the Cinch interface on their Next SL crankset. A lockring that uses the same spline pattern as a common bottom bracket took holds either a single chainring or a removable spider onto the crankarm for a light, simple, and strong mounting system. Race Face's direct mount Narrow Wide chainrings are the ideal complement to the cranks, providing extra chain retention due to their varying tooth dimensions.

Everything from the number of chainrings to the color of the crankarm bolts can be customized on the Next SL cranks, allowing riders to easily achieve their ideal configuration.

Race Face Turbine Wheelset
Race Face Turbine Wheelset

That's right, Race Face is rolling into the world of wheels for 2014 with the introduction of their Turbine wheelset. Available in 27.5” and 29” options, the aluminum rimmed wheels are intended to be able to handle everything from XC riding to enduro racing. To help increase the stiffness of the wheelset while keeping the weight at a competitive level, each wheel uses 28 straight pull spokes with brass nipples, and uses custom sealed cartridge bearings. The wheels are equipped with a 9 or 10 speed compatible three pawl freehub body, but an XD driver is available for riders running cassettes that go to eleven. Race Face has even added a little note onto the rim strips that reads, "Oh this is awkward...I didn't think I'd see you again," in an effort to lighten the mood should riders find themselves fixing a flat on the side of the trail.

Details
• Intended use: XC/Trail/Enduro
• 27.5" (650B) or 29" options
• Tubeless compatible 6061 alloy rim
• Front hub: 15x100mm, 28h straight pull, cartridge bearing, 6 bolt Disc

• Rim dimension: Height - 19.5mm, Outer Diameter - 25mm, Inner Diameter - 21mm
• XD eleven speed driver available as an aftermarket upgrade

I'm disappointed. Those wheels look really great too.

^"Custom sealed cartridge bearings (F+R)"for the wheels? Oh noooo.... Sick cranks though!
  • 3 2
they should have hub only option!!!

I can name at least 1 sale they lost with that decision. Industry9 must be happy about it though, they get get my $ instead.

So what are those little allen keys for on the non-drive side ?
  • 2 0
 spacers maybe?
  • 3 1
I thought that but can see no need for the allen bolts
  • 3 0
Those 650b wheels are not that great, Race Face. I can/will still buy what I need from DT Swiss.
I like the stealth look of your stuff, though.
  • 1 0
@bigburd: Probably something to adjust width if there's a little bit of play, like on previous generation of xtr cranks. Unless spindle is interchangeable as well? Not sure what to think of that sentence: "Their new 'Cinch' interface, an interchangeable 30mm spindle and chainring mounting system"
  • 5 5
new wheel disorder 27.5 ... i told it before.. they will slowly move further and further away.. till your kids wont know what 26" is..
  • 9 1
I would have bought this wheelset as soon as it would have been available - but there's no 26" option?! I don't understand this trend... everyone may ride 650b or 29ers, but at least I still want the option for classic and durable 26"-wheels. Don't try to force people into larger wheels.
  • 21 3
if we stand together.. some companies will fall.. and the good ones will survive.. its called natural selection.. marketing can't do shit if we dont participate..

I see a Raceface rep answering a few questions in here.....Would be nice if he can give us a proper respond to why RF doesn't want to offer a wheelset for 26 in bikes.
  • 1 0
i heard that race face was doing these about 2 months ago and i wanted to get a pair but i guess not anymore......really Race Face no 26inch version?!?!?! there goes that!
  • 23 1
Ok.....about the wheelsize choice for the Turbine wheels. This is the first wheel we have ever done - and since this is more of an XC/Trail/Enduro wheelset we went with the 2 bigger wheel sizes. We understand that there are many riders who still are and will ever be rolling on 26" wheels - we are not forgetting about you. This is our FIRST wheelset....we will be looking to adding more wheels to our line and these other hoops will address many of the concerns that are being brought up here (ex. a 26" wheel). We love all the feedback and the passion that all MTB riders share and display...it reminds us of the passion we bring to making RF gear everyday. Thanks!
  • 4 0
ok that works for me. thanks for the info Raceface-suit. i was starting to get worried there.
  • 7 0
The reply is appreciated Race face! Nice to here from the manufacturer's point of view! And get some future product insights..

It is fine RF. You May make up for it by producing a cheap 26" SixC wheelset. Smile
  • 4 0
That's what I was thinking, it's their first wheelset and there's going to be a learning curve. Better to start out with a wheel that "doesn't" have to be as durable, gives a bit more leeway. Hell, I'm just happy RaceFace is still around......they were making bad-ass stuff before it was cool.

Ya, and first impressions are the most important, so I think you sold your soul RF, and for that reason I am no longer a fan RF. I have so much invested in 26in wheel sets, 20mm hubs and tires, and frames that go with those things. Make no mistake RF you are part of the movement to make 26in wheels obsolete. Remember this RF BC Canada (where I'm from) is the heart and soul of real mountain biking and 26in wheels belong here.

i think its a nice comment by raceface-suit..

but i do keep in mind,.. you are not the boss.. just the media connection.. real decisions are made way up the ladder,..
if the company is in any way working properly.. "they" will listen to your feedback.. but in the majority of the cases, management doenst give a flying shit about the lower levels of the company.. and since i can remember you gone out of business and taken over for a reboot.. the company who owns you makes the shots.. to make money.. thats why you were given a reboot.. just for the name.,. brand names are worth money .. simple as that..

 RIP 26in
we all hate it but it seems the writing is on wall. '13-14 will be the last year that 26in wheels are mainstream. I for one can't wait for all the clearance discounts on forks and wheel-sets before I land that sweet job and promotion and can drop fresh no questions asked $$$ on a shiny clean off the floor 27.5in rig
  • 35 1
Let's see some SIXC wheelset...that's what I'm saying!!!
  • 26 0
These are amazing looking! The idea of not having a limit to chainring size due to the BCD is interesting. You would have complete control over your 1x11 setup.

flag c25porter (Aug 26, 2013 at 16:58) (Below Threshold)
I have a bling ring on my X0 SRAM cranks, this isn't a new idea. Also the offset teeth com from XX1. That being said, I like both ideas and think Race Face did a good job with this setup, SRAM has some good stuff, an obviously worth mimicking (not necessarily copying)
  • 21 1
Narrow/Wide tooth profiling is not a Sram only thing.
  • 1 1
Who else beside SRAM and now Race Face has successfully marketed and continues to sell a narrow-wide chain ring and or spider less front chain ring? Not hating, genuinely want to know my options.
  • 2 1
@c25porter I think MIddleburn and Renthal make one? not too sure right off the top of my head though, and whether these are available in the US are anyones guess...
  • 7 0
 wolftooth
  • 4 0
Wolftooth were the first to use the narrow/wide tooth pattern (after Sram). They do 104mm rings down to 30 tooth and a Spiderless rings for SRAM GPX Cranks.
  • 11 0
In addition to Wolf Tooth, MRP, North Shore Billet, Absolute Black, and e.13 all make spiderless chainrings.
  • 4 0
Narrow wide has been used for decades in motorsport; the debate as to who invented the concept is ongoing as no one knows.
  • 3 0
Spiderless cranks are so clean looking, much appreciation for the styling.
  • 2 0
I jumped on the narrow/wide program and sold my chainguide a few weeks later. I just bought another chainguide yesterday after dropping my chain for the 5th time. It's a nice idea, but you still need a guide if you like it rough.

Thankfully nobody on the board of directors for the worldwide mtb marketing machine decided to forcefully eliminate chainguides from the market.
  • 1 0
kramster, the key for me is a Sram X9 clutch rear deraileur. I have ridden some pretty rough places without a chain guide with no problems, also just a MRP bling ring, so not even Narrow-wide. For a while I was waiting for the chain to drop off, but it just hasn't yet.
  • 1 0
I've got a saint clutch and dialed in the tension quite high. I wonder though if a longer cage would help as my nomad has a fair bit of chain growth and in the small cog it is not under a lot of tension. Could be better with a medium cage. But I've decided that going from never losing a chain ever, to even maybe, is unsatisfactory.
  • 1 0
I think the Narrow-Wide solution+clutch mech+a really minimalist chain guide alike Pauls offerings could be the ideal solution for me and my Blur as chaingrowth is also rather long for me.

Saying that, I still have a triple upfront, so what am I talking about.
  • 21 1
I'm pretty shocked that RF would skip a 26" option especially since they could use the same rim extrusion and just roll the rim to 26". It's not like they had to invest in a carbon mold. I get that many of the new bikes sold are 27.5" and 29" but these are aftermarket wheels and most of the bikes out there are still 26".
  • 24 10
Wheels are able to handle anything from XC to enduro. Unless you ride a 26. I know three people with Bronson's. One has converted it to 26, the other is about to go back to a Nomad, and the third said he would get a 26 Nomad if he lived where I do after riding here all weekend. Neg prop til you drop if you don't like the truth.
  • 1 0
Really curious and interested in converting the Bronson to 26. Do you know why he's doing it?
  • 5 2
He initially built it with 26 while waiting for his wheels to arrive, then spent a month on the 650's and never felt comfortable on them and decided to go back to 26. Another friend just yesterday rented a 650 for the day and is now looking for a 26. First hand experiences I've come into contact with are crashing and burning. I've yet to try one I like as well. I'm sure they excel at something that may resemble mountain biking and I'd rather have one over a 29er, but you can't tell me that the only people in the world left who want to buy a wheelset are giving up on 26.
  • 7 5
That is silly. The times I've demo'd a 650b I couldn't feel the tire size whatsoever. Coming from a Nomad myself, the bronson, rocky altitude and norco sight really didn't feel much different (tire size) in technical terrain. You think enduro riders are riding 650b's for marketing hype instead of actually trying to win with 26'ers?
  • 7 1
Look at the top 3 results on the Crankworx Enduro. All 26" all the time.
  • 13 2
KDM I expected a 650b sympathizer to come here and call bullshit. True stories from 3 owners. Do whatever you want with that information.
I think what you are missing here is that some people don't give a shit whether it is 1% faster or not (and the jury is still out) and some people think that the "not much" difference that you yourself claim to feel is an unwelcome. Many people can feel one click of rebound, 1 degree of head angle, 10mm of stem length, 2 psi of tire pressure, thin grips vs fat. You really think we cant feel wheel size?
Keep your 650 if you like it. I really think you should be able to choose. Just let the rest of us do the same.
  • 5 1
Can we agree that Nico Vouilloz can be taken as an expert with whom none of us can disagree? if yes, the keep on reading. He said that 650b wins you 1 second every three minutes comparing to 26". That means it is very little for anyone who does not fight for top ten spots. So little that it is plain truth that the whole recalibration of industry was unncessary - and that is what I think pisses off most people. not whether it was good or not, but that it is a fkng waste.

Whether reference to Nico has any relevance, it is not important at all because there is no other quality reference... Until then the Jury's out, and every 650b lover should prepare himself for a situation that they might never return.
  • 2 0
Funny, I don't own a 650b and I didn't sympathize. Just stating the obvious, you and your buds must have a lot if money to blow if you think converting back to 26 will make a tangible difference.
  • 2 1
I must have missed 'the obvious'. Is that the part where someone who doesn't own a 650 is telling me how three guys who own one don't know what they are talking about?

Pretty sure you can sell a 650 wheel, fork or frame for more than a 26 right now, so no need for money to blow.
  • 3 0
The teams running 26" in Enduro are the ones who don't have a production 650b bike this year. Its bad marketing to race on something you can't sell.
  • 1 0
Honestly, I think the naysayers are driving the hype more than anyone else. If 650b provides an advantage on certain courses to a pro-rider than congrats to Stevie and the industry. For the rest of us the difference is marginal, if 650b is right for the particular build then great. When the bike isn't working for you, blaming a marginally larger tire size isn't solving your problem.
  • 15 0
Wow, I was expecting that wheelset to cost much more. Nice to see RF continuing to expand their range. I want to see them drop a hydro brakeset, and possibly tires.

RaceFace isnt stupid. they want to maintain a good reputation with there products and offering a 26 inch wheel would enable guys like myself to end up purchasing them and use them for freeride, dh street or DJ. next thing you know there all kicked to shit and people give them a bad reputation. only enabling a 27.5 and 29 keeps the wheels limited to an AM style rider. In my opinion that is a smart move for someone just getting into the game of wheels.

I am not talking out of my ass, I've been playing with all wheel sizes for 3 years and as of 3 weeks ago, I refuse to demo, or try any companies bike in a 26" model.

I'm bummed no 20mm front option.

  • 1 0
A set of wheels that cost $600 should be dedicated to one aspect of mtb. They are too heavy for xc and not wide enough for all mountain. I like the look of the cranks but way too rich unless they are proven performer over many seasons
  • 2 1
Why does the paragraph say it has aluminum spokes with brass nipples, then the spec list says stainless bladed spokes? 5x100 front axle? I don't think this article was ready to be posted yet. The cranks look really great but the narrow rims just don't do it for me. Why would a manufacturer abandon 26" wheels, but go with 21mm width rims?
  • 1 0
I'm with you on this one. Apparently the "Inner Diameter" of the rims is 21mm also!
  • 1 1
 Yes. RIM DIMENSIONS: Height - 19.5mm, Outer Diameter - 25mm, Inner Diameter - 21mm
  • 1 0
25mm is the outer WIDTH and 21mm is the inner WIDTH. They have nothing to do with the diameter of the wheel.
  • 1 0
Cranks are kind of similar idea as the e.13 and FSA BB386 in that they allow easy conversion for all available standards, it means no more worrying about having to invest in new cranks if you change your frame. And that wheelset is exactly what I am looking for on my new trail build - be nice if the were 100gm lighter mind you
  • 1 0
Manufacturers making 26 inch frames/bikes/gear are gonna be busy people in the year or two I reckon. Seems like 27.5 and 29er supply will be much greater than the demand for it. When will they get the picture? Most common defense of 650b: "it doesn't feel any different".... So why bother in the first place?!
  • 1 0
The cranks are very cool! I always loved a spider less chainring set up. I'd never purchase the wheels though. $600 for a non UST wheels is bonkers. Plus I won't convert to 27.5 anytime soon. No thanks raceface.
  • 4 1
I wonder who makes the wheels for them? I would love a wider rim, more like the Syntace wheels.
  • 2 0
Hey Raceface-Suit: I've seen those cranks up close and they look sick! What would you say to a 200lb rider using them as a daily driver on the shore? Yea or nay?
  • 2 0
"Intended use: XC Race/Trail/Enduro". Personally, I would say nay(even though I love RF).
  • 1 0
I read the intended usage, but I'm wary of sacrificing too much strength for weight. A lot of the Enduro dudes are smooth, 160lb racers, so I'm sure it would be awesome for them. If it were a SixC crank, that would be another story.
  • 10 0
We have no weight restrictions on any of our cranks - including these new Next SL's. There would be no sacrificing of strength even with the lightweight nature of these cranks - we engineer them to be quite strong. You can run them on the shore - we have been testing them on BC trails for months! Anywhere you see a trail crank like XO, XTR or XT is exactly where you can run Next SL without any strength sacrifice....the strength to weight on these cranks is off the charts - and they are super stiff too!
  • 1 0
Excellent! Thanks so much for the response. I'm running X0 cranks right now with no problems, so I may look into a set of these.

Aren't the wheels just Sun Ringle that came stock on the Rocky Bikes this year? 28 Spoke hole, straight pull spokes, on the generic sun hub.

Look identical, if that's the case I'm pretty disappointed.

Cranks look slick.
  • 1 0
Not the same wheels at all. Lapierre is the only OE that'll have these spec'd for next year. Rocky was using Novatec hubs too I'm pretty sure.
  • 1 0
All of the parts that they sent me were in sun rims bags. Are the spokes distorted at the one end so they don't spin in the straight pull seat?

 just another in the pipe too long, about to miss the boat so put the cranks out. Great product no doubt.  Well Bmx's did the whole bashguard chainring thing first;

It's actually built into the chainring.

And hope adapted it to 4 bolt, so it should be too long before one is made.

I wonder if they will sell the hubs separately? Would be an awesome place to start with a custom wheel-build. A few more axle choices wouldn't hurt either.
  • 5 3
Why would they name the group set the same name of a notoriously shitty brand of Wal Mart bikes?
  • 24 1
Race Face has been producing cranks with under the name NEXT for 15+ years. Those Walmart bikes can go suck an egg!
  • 23 2
because nobody buying those cranks has even heard of Next bikes.
  • 1 0
If you care so much about the name... scrape of the "NE" and you will have an "XT" crankset and can feel cool again... while still having a solid kick ass crankset. Weeeeeee!
  • 3 1
Nice. But how about an aluminum version for those of us who can't drop that much on a crankset.
  • 3 2
If these came in 165mm I'd buy a set for my wife tomorrow. Surely it's worthwhile someone making a 68mm/165mm spiderless crankset for trail use?
  • 2 0
I'm 5'8" and I'd buy a set for myself too.
  • 2 0
Any chance the cranks will eventually be available in 180 mm? There are lots of tall riders out there....
  • 1 0
All I think when I look at those cranks is, Jack of all trades, master of NONE. It's just a way to mass produce and cut costs while jacking up the price.
  • 3 0
Mate, people were talking Jacks and Masters thing about 6" bikes not more than 5 years ago. And look what happened... Sorry but specialization is currently considered as "outdated" in all disciplines of life. And for a good reason because specialty is a bubble that is often confused with not being able to do much at all... Like a DH bike... Does one or two kinds of riding well and does not do other at all. Masters are nerds and nerds suck...

Calm down everyone, its an xc/trail wheelset. when they come out with an atlas wheel it will be available in 26". everyone needs to relax on the whole thing.
  • 1 0
Cant speak about it; those rims, Ive seen 650b, I have not rid'n, nor had a chance to compare them!

The crank looks strong and lite!
  • 2 0
i hope the wheelset comes in other color schemes as well.

When is this available to purchase? With the new fat skinny tooth pattern do you need to buy a new chain and cassette?
  • 7 4
 No 26"? WTF?
  • 1 0
Oem sales...most new bikes will be 650. That way shops don't need to stock 26/29..maybe?
  • 1 0
 No sh*t!
  • 2 0
So how are these cranks different from my X0/Wolf Tooth setup?
  • 2 0
Same setup as of this week! It's awesome! I'm loving it, and as long as i live in Michigan at least, I don't plan on running front derailers or guides ever again.

150g lighter, interchangeable spindle (for people that want to go to FatBike spindles), made in Canada and a longer warranty.
  • 1 0
Makes this the clear choice if one is on the market for a new setup.
  • 1 0
Raceface says they offer 24/36 chainrings in BCD 64/104mm. Anyone know if they will work with a Shimano XT 2x10 setup?
  • 1 1
Nice looking wheels... but I'm not buying a new bike to use them. Surprised there isn't a 26" version... maybe 'coming soon'?
  • 1 1
pinkbike is reserved for shreders and bikes that go hard. 29 and 27.5 is for ppl that cant roll over things good enough with 26, so GTFO!
  • 1 0
Thank You! I have been waiting for a cheaper set of enduro wheels that I won't crumple a season in
  • 3 0
 No 26", no buy.
  • 1 1
fuck you raceface and all you other stupid companys with 29ers and 650b!!! I will never ever buy a pair of wheels in any other size than 26!!
  • 5 6
$600 for cranks? It doesn't matter how light they are if they're more than twice the cost of other lightweight durable cranks on the market.
  • 6 5
I agree, stupid expensive...you can buy three for the price of one, i dunno about you but weight doesn't mean that much to me!
  • 5 2
 but they're raceface... aka good
  • 2 1
I believe aka is a truvative brand Wink
  • 2 1
finnrambo they'd have to be exceptionally good before I'd even think about dropping $600 on a crank. They would have to never break, save over a half pound on my bike, be the stiffest crank on the market, and also look damn good. That's a lot for one crank, and I already don't think they look that good, so they have that working against them.
  • 4 0
The Next SL cranks are the lightest production cranks available ...they are super stiff and will save 1/4-1/2 pound on your bike when compared to most XC/Trail cranks. We think they look pretty damn sexy too....but of course looks are in the eye of the beholder. Plus the cranks are made in Canada using materials from the USA.

I don't think I've ever seen a brand of crank not broken at one point or another. I've broken an XO, E13's and Shimanos, but my SixC cranks are by far the best I've ever owned in terms of quality and looks. They shaved a ton of weight off of my DH bike and I can't wait to get these Next cranks on my XC bike.

 will the cranks fit bb30?
  • 5 0
We will offer a spacer kit to allow our 30mm spindle to work with bb30 shells.

Same setup as of this week! It's awesome! I'm loving it, and as long as i live in Michigan at least, I don't plan on running front derailers or guides ever again.

  • 2 5
I am truly disappointed at you race face one of the brands that has always been there since the beginning you are betraying us true/legit mt.bikers... f^%ck 650b n 29gayers.
  • 2 0
We are not betraying 26' wheel riders. This is our FIRST WHEELSET...we will be releasing other wheels down the road that will offer choices for 26" riders as well. We appreciate our fans dedication to RF and the growth of MTB.
  • 1 1
 the f*ck 26"????????
  • 3 5
why wouldn't they have a 26" option? isn't that limiting their market???
  • 1 0
a little bit but it won't hurt their oem market
  • 2 4
