Outerbike 2013 Randoms

Many riders have at least heard of Eurobike or Interbike, the yearly trade shows intended for bicycle dealers and those involved directly with the cycling industry, but Outerbike might not be as familiar of an event. Now in its fourth year, Outerbike takes place just outside of Moab, Utah, and is aimed squarely at consumers, giving them the chance to try out the latest high end offerings from a wide range of companies. Three full days of demos gives riders the opportunity to narrow down their options, and to start scheming how to save up enough pennies to purchase one of these top tier rides.

photo
Once the Outerbike gates open it's a mad dash as eager riders sprint towards the booth containing their ride of choice. The guy dressed in black on the left looks to be doing some kind of ninja heel click move as he nears the Ibis tent.

photo
G-Form had rental knee and elbow pads in a distinctive yellow color available for riders in need of protection from the hard desert sandstone. The pads are constructed mainly from PORON XRD, a flexible, lightweight material designed to harden on impact and absorb the brunt of a blow. The retail version is available in a much less attention-grabbing black color for $49.99 USD.

photo
Be prepared. Decked out with a hydration pack, fanny pack, and seat bag this rider was ready for anything.

photo
With up to 6" of travel, a 1x11 drivetrain, and a Rock Shox Pike up front, this bright orange Intense Tracer 275 looked promising.

photo
Western Spirit Cycling knows how to do it right. Who can resist bacon, especially if it's free? The company was also helping to shuttle riders to various trailheads, and offered guided rides earlier in the week.

photo
Look at all that Kashima. Santa Cruz had their full demo fleet available, and there was a constant line of riders queuing up for some saddle time aboard the new bikes.

photo
We first spotted a prototype version of Kali's Shiva full face helmet at the Taipei Bike Show, and after a few revisions the helmet is now nearing production. The sub-1000 gram, DOT certified helmet has a carbon fiber shell bonded to a foam liner that uses pyramid shapes to help spread the impact force to a wider area, decreasing the force that reaches the head. MSRP: $499 USD.

photo
It was only a matter of time before this happened. Unicycle.com had their $865 Nimbus Oregon fatbike unicycle on display, complete with a disc brake. We're not sure what else to say.

photo
Kitsbow's uber-high end apparel line seemed to be a hit with the Outerbike attendees, especially when the temperatures plummeted and a hailstorm passed through on Friday, sending riders in search of more layers and hot coffee, both of which the company was more than happy to provide

photo
GT's Sensor goes up to 27.5" wheels for 2014, with 130mm of travel and their PathLink suspension design.

photo
Reel Cameras is a relative newcomer to the helmet cam market, but their HD Slayer camera is as full featured as it gets, with a 4x digital zoom, an LCD screen, and the option of swapping between the stock 170 degree or a 142 degree lens (available separately). MSRP: $299 USD.

photo
While there might be plenty of eye-catching bikes to ogle underneath the tents at Outerbike, nothing beats Moab's natural surroundings.

Stay tuned for more from Outerbike 2013.

you can see a review of UNI on unigeezer dot com crazy talent.
  • 16 1
 can you use 26er specific wd 40 on a 650b unicycle ?
  • 21 1
No, the nozel wont allow for the extra inches the fluid has to cover, hence it being 26er SPECIFIC. And the shit thing is the nozel upgrades to allow for the switch to 650b wont be released until 2015. Something to do with it stepping on the toes of one of dave Weagles patents so ive heard. Theyre working closely on a collaboration acceptable to both parties as we speak.
  • 2 0
The disc brake is obviously there so you can do can-cans.
  • 5 1
it sucks balls because its not 650b.

I dunno about the Kali carbon helmet and its price tag of $500? Hasn't really been proven yet; Kali seems as though they still have some growing to do as a helmet company before they start asking for that sort of money. Maybe it's just me though.
  • 4 2
Any carbon shell helmet will cost you that much (at least). Only concern: those are hardly all pyramids. Some look more like a broken bag of bugles.
  • 3 2
 They Look Great !
  • 2 0
Sorry, R-Trailking-S, but the very effective, popular TLD Carbon D3 comes in at $450.00... One that has held its weight time and time again. Troy Lee has also been making stellar equipment for a very long time. I can't say the same for Kali, who's now asking us to trust them with our heads.
  • 3 0
I work at a shop that carries Kali. Best few helmets I have owned. Got to be ambitious right?
  • 5 0
some helmets in the Kali line are "in molded" only full face helmets on the market to do that. In molding is the standard with open face helmets...none of us would ride a open face helmet that was built the old way.
Any company pushing helmet technology in any way is a good thing!
  • 3 0
JCSmith: So true! Props to them on pushing it further. Smile
  • 1 0
Well, all the special MIPS helmets and some like this cost a little more... thats what i have been looking at
  • 3 0
I love kali helmets and yes that is a little expensive, but this is a DOT approved helmet. Maybe somebody can help me out with this, but I think DOT approval is certified for motorcycles. If you go look at the TLD Carbon D3, it does not have this same certification, so they are difficult to compare. Everything considered I think its a decent price point.
  • 3 0
Ryancoonya Yes DOT is approved by the Dept Of Transportation...certified for motorcycles. That kali is the lightest Dot helmet on the market.
  • 2 0
I didn't know that! That's awesome. Well then, shame on me for speaking without researching more. Good on Kali for pushing bounds! Smile
  • 1 0
However, as I'm more of a helmet purist of some sort, I think I'll stick with my beloved TLD lid for now and let you fancy kids test out the new goodies. I'd love to see a review sometime in the near future though, that's for sure! Whaddya think, PB?
  • 4 0
I'm a geek on stuff like this... I love Kali products, and they have treated me very well. I have the 2013 Kali carbon DOT approved helmet AND the carbon non-DOT helmet and I have "tested" them both a few times with optimistic results. Price tags are ateep for carbon+DOT but how much is your brain worth? Anyway, for those of you interested in the DOT vs non-DOT rating issue as it applies to mtb, this PB article raises some interesting questions: www.pinkbike.com/news/DH-Helmets-vs-Motocross-Helmets-Which-Is-Safer.html
  • 1 0
aaoliver- Thanks for the article that was pretty interesting. Although I don't completely believe that in a bad crash your head isn't in excess of 75 mph or close to it with a nice rag doll and centrifugal forces to propel your head at a much faster rate. I came straight from moto so I've always had a DOT helmet. I have never really thought about going down in protection, Ive been in some gnarlyyy downhill accidents that never happened in years of moto.
  • 1 0
Ryancoonya- I think the criteria for DOT is 275 g, which is force per unit mass... But semantics aside, your head can't go more than 75 mph unless the rest of your body is.. And I don't think that's possible (except for that guy that rides down the volcanoes) on a bicycle. But on a motorcycle, yes. It is an interesting argument but there haven't been any formal data generated comparing the models so difficult to know for sure. All that being said, I always find myself grabbing my DOT for more nasty riding, and using my non-DOT for stuff like pump track, dirt jumping, DS, mellower DH. I ride moto too and I agree with you, I've never even come close to taking a crash in moto like I have on my DH bike!

"... Nimbus Oregon fatbike unicycle on display, complete with a hydraulic disc brake."

That's a mechanical brake.
  • 8 4
 they never said hydraulic...
  • 13 0
It was edited. Said hydraulic at the time I posted that.
  • 1 0
Look in the background of the first picture. There's another unicycle on the ground and it shows a hydraulic brake lever under its seat. So probably different models available.
  • 1 1
 Oh, snap!
  • 6 3
I wonder where from did Reel Cameras get the inspiration to make their own camera...hmmm...
  • 9 0
do we reely want to go there?

My next bike was going to be a GT Distortion but they got rid it and most of their 26" offerings. So Nukeproof Mega TR for me then....
  • 2 0
Fucking nice GT. Strange to see an Intense with Vee Rubber but the world change and maybe they are doing good rubbers
  • 2 1
I wanna review on the force(carbon) please. How does it climb? Frame weight?
  • 1 0
vee rubber is excellent traded my kendas in for vee rubbers

I remember when Maxxis and Kenda tires only were seen on sub $300 bikes. Things change

 Dat Tracer tho.
  • 7 6
So how do you use the brake on that unicycle?
  • 19 1
You pull the brake lever on the seat.....
  • 2 1
they have a brake lever under the seat.
  • 43 0
the brake is just a way of introducing your face to the ground. Faces brake well.
  • 11 1
the dick brake under the seat
  • 29 3
who wakes up one morning and says "yea I need to ride a unicycle off road." Not a friggin bicycle but a one wheeled contraption. Don't get me wrong it takes a lot of skill. But in all honesty fisting probably takes some skill too and I sure wouldn't want my dad watching me do either.
  • 7 1
Some people are actually pretty damn sick at mountain unicycling.
  • 7 0
to this day the wildest thing i've ever seen on the trail was a group of four or five unicycles going down the gnarliest rock trail i've ever ridden, it was intense enough on my two wheels. that was a crazy day
  • 3 1
Can we have fights on the trails, damn, two wheelers, damn, unics.
  • 2 0
Its used as a drag break when descending, takes load off the legs. That's what they tell me anyway...
  • 2 1
I personally like the reflectors on the fat uni pedals.
  • 7 0
 That's interesting.
  • 1 0
 The intense tracer is LEGIT
  • 1 1
Tracer looks sick. 6 inches of travel.27.5 wheels Nice. 1000 dollar drive train? No thanks.
  • 1 0
A Shimano XTR 2X10 drivetrain will cost you $1700 retail. XO 2X10 is $1249.

XX1 is $1232. XX1 and XO1 are in actuality less expensive than a top of the line Shimano XTR or SRAM XO 2X10 setup. Each individual part is more expensive, however you don't have to buy a front derailleur, front shifter, or chain retention device.

Upgrading your current drivetrain to XX0 or XX1 is a very expensive decision. However, I wouldn't consider buying a new bike that didn't have an Sram 1X11 drivetrain. Less parts to break, and a smoother running system all around.
