Just another "nice" day in the office for Rachel Atherton... another "W" notched.
Remi Thirion FINALLY making a step onto the podium, and a huge step it was. Thirion has been knocking on the podium for a while, but to take a win--the first French win since Fabian Barel's win in Maribor back in 2009--was huge!
Rachel on top; Manon Carpenter in second, Myriam Nicole in third, Emmeline Ragot taking fourth, and Florian Pugin taking the last step on the box.
Mens' s Podium: Remi Thirion with the "W", Gee Atherton in second, Sam Hill in third, Steve Smith for fourth, and Troy Brosnan (with his second podium in 3 races) taking fifth.

Good to see Hill stayed up in the top and Stevie!!!!!! I didnt see what his quali was but hes been riding really consistently so far this year. See you boys in Whistler!
ok all im saying is gee was 1st by over 2 seconds remi was very good down the last section but its very possible without the mistake that gee may have held on for the win.
Remi deserves that win 100% - the balls he showed were massive, i am sure there should a shot on the internet with him dragging them behind his bike while coming through the bottom section - insanity, but risk to reward were measured perfectly.
lets not forget that he had to put the whole thing together - remarkable performance and unbelievable commitment, savage course.
Sam had a look of "wtf do i need to do to get the #1 spot" - his run was remarkable and it was so damn close between the 3 of them, Mt St Anne babay - bring it!
my reply was a statement in general, not aimed @ you future. if in fact yours was aimed at me.
i am not sure that Gee lost all the time in his moment - the line he took was slower regardless of the slip, now don't get me wrong Gee is sharing the same flag as me so i was rooting for him and always will over anybody, although i really wanted Hill to get it as a long time supporter and because Hill getting another win is so good for the sport in general from a fan perspective.
oh man, Gee looks PISSED... he's also putting his arm around Steve but appears to be refusing to do the same to Remi haha. He's still obviously gonna win the WC overall.
hes won half of the rounds and placed second in another. pretty much he has to stay on his bike and pedal and he'll be good. maybe before this race it was questionable, but not anymore... imo at least
KEEP PINNING IT GEE!!!!!!
Trying to watch it live on the big screen with the surround sound cranked up made me want to use the chainsaws on there f-king hands so they couldn't make any more noise. So, so annoying.
I was about to make a comment on this, it goes completely against one of the awesome parts of the sport which is the fact that these guys don't need an engine in their bike to go fast!
Ok i too like chainsaws but i only say its annoying as hell because they are at the finish line for probably 3+ hours revving the crap out of them, at least walk the course and do it. Im sure the crowd and hotseat wanted to blow their brains out.
We are all getting this for free courtesy of Red Bull and one issue albeit an unfortunate one and a lot of you are bashing Red Bull. Let's all be grateful that we have this free coverage. Just imagine if we all have to start paying for it just like other sports out there.
Redbull is providing a great service. At least we don't have to deal with all of the adverts and everything else that comes with it being broadcast on mainstream television. Would much rather put up with the occasional technical difficulty.
I didn't think of that but that is exactly how it works. I interned for a satellite communications company in college and that's exactly how communications satellites work. Each satellite has a certain amount of transponder space and its rented out in blocks.
Thirion is not any underdog, now he got works BOS suspension and a support from the factory that NOBODY have or will have this season. During his training sessions he was using a telemetry device to dial his suspension and I suppose the BOS genius himself was reading the datas.
A decade ago SUNN riders smashed everyone on the wc scene because of their suspensions ... and they were designed by the same man. Nico vouilloz was dialing his suspensions the same way and we all know the result.
Give thirion some credit though the guy hit his run spot on and smashed that track he was visibly faster than everyone on that bottom section raw skill right there doesnt matter how much fancy suspension hes got.
@maxhajdu23, go talk sh#t on vital, we don't need your negative crap here. a top 10 is nothing to sneeze about, and he's young and relatively new to the sport. let's see you beat him.
@sicsoma I wasnt saying that a 10th place finish is bad or that he is slow hes still insanely fast just like the rest of the WC riders thats a good spot to finish I should have been more specific I meant that he just doesnt have the podium speed anymore.
Unlike most here, I think that Gwin is performing poorly primarily because of his bike. For whatever reason (geometry, leverage rate, size, etc.) the guy has no confidence in his equipment, and confidence equals speed. Sucks to be working in the Specialized marketing department right now.
Troy doesn't seem to be having any trouble with his equipment so I don't think that the total picture at all. Its just easy for people to blame the bike.
Thats the dumbest thing I ever heard. Last I checked, Troy and Gwin weren't the same person. What works for one does not necessarily work for the other. If Gwin is so conifdent in his machine, then why is he continually trying different sizes and now altering the frame itself?
Really fast crash, over the bars, head first into the dirt.... Im sure they'll replay it again sometime tonight. It's pretty much your worst nightmare!
You can tell that the first time his head hit the dirt it blew the wind so much out of him that he could not even protect his head the second time it hit the dirt. If he does not come out of that with a concussion he is darn lucky.
CG recently died from a nasty DH crash and it took best part of a year to get sorted so it's no surprise he is retiring - he has recovered, he wants to race enduro and have fun.
LEGEND ! never forget, and for anybody that doesn't really get how much he has done - go look at the last 20 years of DH, freeride, 4X. He has been in it through all the progression of modern equipment and has always been up there. Party animal !
I think he might have meant the guys who posted up the results on the text feed while we were waiting for the footage to come back on line. I guess they thought they were funny.
I'm sure it helped smooth out some of the roughness but it was his line choice and balls-out riding style that ultimately won it for him. Fair play.
His line missing out the deep rut a few corners before coming out of the woods was amazing.
Well said dirtydee, give the some credit. I'm sure BOS suspension works really nice but straight lining a section everybody else treated as 3 corners took a lot of skill, balls and imagination. Well done Remy
So to summarise, red bull are apparently going to loose some PB fans as they broke transmission but hey let's be glad the coverage isn't owned by Murdoch & Co! The French have a new DH Hero. Sam Hill, good to have you back on the podium it's been too long! Bike manufactures will scrap the term bottle cage mounts as they will now be known as Data acquisition system mounts!
YEAHHHHH !!!!!!!The froggies are back in business !!here we are !!!!!!!!Hell yeah !!!I jumped of hapiness when I saw Hill was over !(but I would have liked to see him win !) Thirion no podium in his life and suddenly, beating the monster Gee(sus) !!!and all other monsters !!HO MY GOD !!This is insane !and....of course "LOOK AT THE TIME !!"
Was hoping for Hill taking the win but I'm happy for Thirion, good to see some change at the top. Well deserved win, he was pushing hard through the entire of that insane run!
@chaindriven , while Gwin does look very serious at times he DID talk to others on the podium. Pay closer attention to the feed if you want to criticize tiny inconsequential things that riders do while they aren't riding. We have all seen that stern look from Gee Atherton when he wasn't winning races. Some of these guys are just fierce competitors and people are different in general. Perhaps we should stop portraying OUR chilled out happy go lucky local trail riding camaraderie on to top paid internationally endorsed professionals? Give it a rest and enjoy the race. Respect their abilities, we aren't and most likely will never be friends with any top tier riders.
Joey I respect their abilities very much and I did enjoy the race quite a bit. Excuse me for having an observation. If you would like to pay "closer" attention to the feed how about letting me know how much time he spent talking to others and how much time he just sat there like a lump on a log.
@chaindriven , Didnt mean to jump on you. Getting on Gwin for being himself is getting old. Let me put it this way...they all conversed a little bit. Troy and Stevie seemed to talk the most. Really they all looked nervous because they knew there were some really fast guys up top. Also, that delay probably had them over-thinking, maybe.
Gwin + bad karma + Specialized (Podium kryptonite?)= 10th place. those are facts , not disrespect , when a rider that dominated the wc last year struggles this hard you have to ask yourself why that's all .
I think it's absolutely halarious that gwins selling more sessions after he left trek. Should have honoured that contract... Scumbag. Again awesome to see Steve smith doing well and it's always great to see the most talented rider maybe ever on the podium again even if its only a third.
@thenotoriousmic - have whatever opinion you want, but at least get some of the facts straight before calling someone a scumbag. Gwin did not break a contract with Trek.
Lets he honest we don't know for sure but we all know its pretty likely he did. You don't see a team like trek behaving the way they did unless there's a large amount of truth in it.
I just can't believe that Gwin has dropped off so much this year compared to the last two years... I have to believe that its the bike... I just can't believe that everyone else jumped up their game in one season as well. I think that the Demo is a fine bike but this has to show that it just isn't the best bike for him. I like Gwin so hope he finds how to ride that bike like he rode a session soon or I might have to right him off.
MoabRover, we all know now that Aaron did not have a signed contract with Trek but he did have have agreement with them AND left them without a top pilot at the worst possible time of the year...Kinda like giving your 2 weeks notice to your employer before quitting. You dont have to do it but you do it do leave in good terms and for future references, its call professionalism...Aaron hasnt done that.Whatever bullshit happened between the 2 , one thing is for sure, Gwin did leave the team mid december letting a lot of good people down and creating a real shit show...We'll probably never know what really happened but personally? I think it was extremely poor judgement of him to do that and its hard not to think he simply got greedy . . .sorta kinda looks like a scumbag move from where I stand ;-)
this going out too all you know it all, armchair quarter backs, don't turn are sport b.s. talk show ball sport, this is MOUNTAIN BIKE WHERE YOU NEED 2 BALLS,that being said every rider that came down this REAL MAN'S TRACK need to be respected,it not a bike groom green bike park,so quit the bull s,,,,.and be happy you got to see it from lazy boy with a pop in had.once again these men well do respect.on any sunday,,,,,.
Martinexzorlando, not too br a dick but I watch the race rebuilding my fork and then hit the bike park, did 12 laps...Conditions are extremely rough and rode hard all day..Why is it that people on here think that we necessarily aren't good riders or ride at all when we post comments ??
BTW that course look like a lot of fun...not to take away anything to those riders but I wouldnt exactly say it takes balls to ride something like that...racing down at mach1 , sure, maybe? but still, Ive seen FAR gnarliest track in my time
tuumbaq,so you road track's,ya this course looked fun,but when your raceing at the PRO LEVEL ITS a different game, your mind and body are set for mach5,ya when there's no tape and human cheering, anyone can ride this TRACK,i'm not hateing on you tuumbaq, but some of these cats typeing here must think and do some home work, and i've been on track with tape and human's cheering, and some of these pro men,its a high you can even put in word's 2,i've seen the level of this sport, any time your in cali hit me up or not,i've been on 2 wheels since 1976,i got in the game late, any ways, bottom line this sport rocks, and all the rider's are real human's,so any hater's out there, first walk a mile in the person shoe's before you talk.
I have no idea what you're saying but I love you all the same. I was riding my BMX in a drainage ditch from a nuclear power station... I'm not even joking I'm a full mutant now these downhill racers are pussys!
Remi was blowing off many of the rutted out lines and just smoking! Gee was hell on fire up top, but just had a bit of tough luck at the bottom. Stevie hanging right in there. Sort of a bummer for Hill and Minnaar. Hope Cam's ok.
I guess with Barel and CG retiring from World Cup DH it was time for another French man to step up, Remi's lines were so dialed and in control he reminded me of Nico.
Thought Gwin would do better with the longer rear end, hopefully he'll get his old speed back with more time on it and just focusing on the tracks.
Remi's line and speed exiting the woods at the bottom was something else, then he doubled the flat bit at the bottom that everyone else struggled with. Amazing.
Great to see him in a shirt with FOX written all over it in huge letters and a tiny Boss logo.
I guess the telemetry paid off.
That was worth waiting for.
That FOX jersey is the standard jersey that has "FOX" printed there no matter what team you are on or if you bought it at your local shop. It is not a sponsor "location" per say. Even if that were true what percentage of team contributions do you think Commecal receives from FOX and BOS?
Its total crap some guys and girls are out there weeks on the course b4 the race. I know it gets cut up etc but its still shit gee arrives 4 days b4 the event. Commencal made in Andorra, remi rides a commencal, remi wins! He was pinned for sure but I bet he's had weeks on track. For me the skill is to learn the track in the same time as everyone else. Then the fastest guy or girls wins fair and square
Fair point but any/all riders could have gotten there earlier if they truly desired. There were other race obligations true but some teams were there since late last week. There was a huge gap since VDS, enough for any european rider to get to the track at least once. We drive that far for races in the USA weekly.
I think it was Hill who said that the track had changed a lot since it was first rideable, and that no one had a clear advantage by riding the track prior to the WC event.
What I'm saying is no riders should be aloud to ride the course any earlier than anyone else. If your telling me a rider who spends 2 weeks on a course compared to someone riding for 4 days on the same course doesn't have a advantage then I feel you don't actually ride or race bikes!
Ohhh no.... I hoped for it the hole day. Then RedBullTV problem and then this result! BUT Sam Hill you are the best so ride on and ride safe. It´s the fairest sport, so congrats to Remi Thirion. He worked hard for this like every Rider. I grant to you! (Don´t know if this is right) Sam Hill will be 1st this year. And thank you RedBull for broadcasting every race well.
PiNkbike jinxed Hill. I just had to say it. But man the results are downright incredible. Gwin finished 2 seconds up on Hill's quali which proves he's still on it..Brosnan also getting solid result.. Great 3rd place for Sam! But man Gee is just relentless this year. When Gee became world champ in Val di Sole I thought he won just because Hill crashed.. It appears that in time he has proven his worth. Good job Gee! And to Remi, what can I say?? Congratulations!! What are the UCI standings now!?
She caught up to the rider ahead of her. They do not wait until the previous rider is off course to start the next. Usually the starts are at a 30sec interval.
She crached during her quali run so she had not a good start list. and because she's fast, (like an other frenchy from the same team today...)she chatched the one in front of her . What a shame for her !
i dont think is the (data game) in this race , i think that remy winning is 100% a rider winning (ok with a good bike) and is a little normal a very good result for him especialy after his great run in val d isole (sorry for my english)
It wasn't a technical issue. The broadcast was allotted a finite amount of time on a particular satellite. They ran out of time due to the course hold and having to get Cam Cole off the hill. The fact that it was only a 15 to 20 minute black out before getting the feed to a different sat is pretty impressive actually.
So no, it wasn't a technical issue. They were victims of circumstance.
cam cole's left shin looked a bit bendy to me!no one wants to see a crash like that, heal up soon!
swenduro you sound like a redbull shill,i appreciate the free coverage of the world cups but the coverage has been pretty bad for the last 2 seasons, glitching when theres only a few riders to go,cameramen zooming in on trees for 20 seconds during a winning race run etc,but at least they have cuningham/lopes doing the commentary, albeit warner being toned down a little bit and less one liners than the jamaican bobsled team.
No offence, but since this is a mountain bike web, and since that this is a very important event I think it's pretty obvious that you DO NOT have to be here until you have seen the race, because they want to be updated to follow the pace of the events.
Sometimes I can't watch it live so I watch the replay. If they post the results on the homepage then I don't get the thrill of seeing the results unfold 'live' while I eat my brekky.
Pinkbike, please don't post results on the homepage. You didn't do it for any of the other races this year.
When this article was first posted they listed the results ON THE HOME PAGE and THEN they changed it so the results weren't listed after an hour i.e. an hour before you guys saw the front page. Isn't it obvious what has happened here? How stupid do you think we are?
Casey brown, and Miranda Miller are both injured. Dont know why Miss Gatto was a no show. Its really to bad that there isn't more support for these women! Most of them are more or less self funded.
You come to a mtb news website the day of a major race and complain about spoilers.... Even if you start reading the title you can tell what its going to cover and stop yourself.
rerbull, why do always mess up the broadcast when there's only ten riders to go? and tell the cameramen to stop zooming in on kids for ten seconds when danny hart is just about to do a whip! rant over.
As usual in his interview he was humble and acknowledged that others are doing a better job than he is but he still gets idiots hating on him. He wasn't making any excuses or trying to take away from anyone elses achievements. He's a great rider and sports person.
"would of done alot better if i just did better" thats what I hear. Racing is top to bottom and being able to stay in control of your bike is a big part of it.
And...? What's your point? Every single rider who is interviewed says the same thing. If anything Gwin was trying to not make excuses like that and was making a point of how he has never had more fun on a bike than this weekend. Stop nit picking problems with things he says.
lets not forget that he had to put the whole thing together - remarkable performance and unbelievable commitment, savage course.
Sam had a look of "wtf do i need to do to get the #1 spot" - his run was remarkable and it was so damn close between the 3 of them, Mt St Anne babay - bring it!

The French have a new DH Hero.
Sam Hill, good to have you back on the podium it's been too long!
Bike manufactures will scrap the term bottle cage mounts as they will now be known as Data acquisition system mounts!
You definitely missed the best end to a race this season!!!!
Very happy to see that CRC/Nukeproof may have been just what he needed.
Thirion no podium in his life and suddenly, beating the monster Gee(sus) !!!and all other monsters !!HO MY GOD !!This is insane !and....of course "LOOK AT THE TIME !!"

Same results and some riders will complain, starting with Thirion teammate for not receiving the same support from BOS.
Finally the bike and the components will make the difference like they used to. High five to Olivier Bossard
