Kelly McGarry Signs With YT Industries

Kelly McGarry

Kelly McGarry, the 32-year-old Kiwi who backflipped his way to global internet fame during the 2013 Red Bull Rampage, will be riding for YT Industries for the upcoming season. We checked in with Kelly to find out more about this move, and his plans for the future.

What prompted the move to YT?

I knew a couple of the guys over at YT and had been talking to them as they are fast growing company that are looking to expand to the Southern Hemisphere market where I can be a real benefit to them. I had four great years with Diamondback and I really appreciate all they have done for me in that time, but I am excited for this change to YT Bikes and a new chapter of my riding career.

I really enjoy riding a wide range of bike disciplines but I feel my strengths and passion lies with gravity orientated aspects of the sport; YT bikes is a perfect match to my style of riding and has an epic range of bikes to cater for everything I would ever want to do on a bike. They also have one of the strongest teams out there full of riders I have a hell of a lot of respect for, and I'm honoured to be included on the team and looking forward to a big year of shredding bikes!

Kelly McGarry

What events will you be attending for 2015?

2015 is going to be another big year of riding bikes and traveling for me, usually my summer at home is relatively cruisy in comparison to my Northern Hemisphere season but things in NZ are really starting to kick off, especially in Queenstown where I live, and my schedule is more packed than ever! I am going to be sticking around New Zealand till around May, myself and my bizo partner Tom Hey are going to be building the Crankworx Rotorua Slopestyle course so that should be fun, then I will be competing in the event in March. We also have the Queenstown Bike Festival Slopestyle in downtown Queenstown in March, which we have built for the past 3 years and is a super fun event at night under lights.

When May comes it will be time to get on that big ol' plane and head to USA/Canada /Europe, I will be hitting some events there such as Colorado Freeride Fest, Crankworx Whistler and of course my fav Red Bull Rampage! In between all that I have a couple trips to Europe planned and I'm sure some more adventures will pop up along the way, so there won't be to much time to be working on my stamp collection or foosball career! (*I don't really collect stamps or play foosball)

Any big goals for the season?

I think my goal for the season is to ride more big bikes, its the part of the sport where I am the most stoked, I'm loving the new bike and planning on shredding the hell out of it this year. In saying that, I plan on getting out on some big adventures on my all-mountain bike (Capra) up in them there hills.I guess my other goals would be to do good at Rampage again, the usual goal of remaining stoked and basically punching life in the face!

They're going to have to change the name of freeride to young-talent-industries-ride....
  • 84 1
Seriously! YT have now picked up all three of my favorite freeride riders. They have good taste. I just hope they make strong bikes...
  • 49 1
or YT world tour instead of FMB would tour Wink

This confirms that YT has the sickest freeride team ever, great job YT!

@gabriel-mission9 my noton has held up so well, so much fun! always hear the same good things about others riding yt too, such a rad company!
  • 27 1
Now if I could only get one stateside.
  • 3 0
@zac, I've just got a noton , got a decent one second hand off pb, only riden it a few short times, but love it so far, cant wait for the good weather to arrive and have some proper fun on it.
  • 30 2
@Scotj009 I don't know man, Trek still have Semenuk, Cam McCaul, Tom Van Steenburgen, Brett Rheeder and Ryan Howard... That's a pretty sick team in my opinion...
  • 4 1
That is a very valid point actually!.... and they do tend to win most of the events and if not rank very high up!
  • 16 0
Incredible. YT gets all the wild ones.
  • 2 1
The specialized FR squad ain't too bad either - and stacked with Canucks to boot. Not to take away from how great it is to see YT support wildmen.

 WHAT!!! no foosbal?!?!?!?!?!

concidering both Trek and Specialized is huge corporate (ugh) firms who sells bikes all over the world and YT only have their web-page, I¨d say Yt have done good!

Thus the end of Diamondback's run as a legitimate bike company.
  • 88 0
They've still got that young ripper Carson Storch. He's pretty legit.

Just remembered he's on Mongoose... close enough haha. Skilled rider on a lesser known team

does yt even make trials bikes?
  • 5 0
Remember where the signed zink from too!!

Danny M's been using a nomad for edits, he could keep inspired for trials, and YT for everything else!
  • 1 0
Diamondback has Eric Porter too....but their legitimacy is quickly fading
  • 6 0
@Zimmer68 : No Nomad, Danny MacAskill rode a Bronson in his The Ridge edit.
  • 8 0
I was pretty impressed with his Diamondback remaining intact after the Rampage crash. I've seen far more acclaimed bikes crack from far far smaller hits than that.

  • 1 1
 What's mongoose? Wink
  • 3 0
Legitimacy has less to do with what pros they hire, than it does what bikes they actually make for the public. The last time Diamondback was a 'legitimate' mountain bike company was in the 90s. In the last few years they've been trying to break back into the market with mixed results.
  • 1 0
solid move on YT's part. stoked to see what mcgazza comes up with as far as creative edits with his skills + that quiver
  • 70 2
Like the idea of a company deciding "to hell with racing, let's do a shit ton of cool videos"
  • 13 4
I bet you get a lot more exposure for your money by signing the riders they have compared to trying to run a world cup dh team
  • 3 0
You can pretty much just send your riders off into the wild to do their own shit.
Interesting thing about yt is they are pretty much always sold out so it's clearly working. Who are they going to get from the world of enduro for the capra? (Or have I been living under a rock?)
  • 6 0
pretty sure the Capra doesn't need any more advertising!
  • 7 0
the second i start hearing they sell bikes to the U.S. is the day Specialized falls... hahaha jk, but We americans are waiting for Y.T. to officially sell bikes in the U.S.

It might be a good thing they collapsed and dissipated some of the energy, probably helped him walk away
  • 4 0
Yeah, @Silliker269, I agree. He might have broken if the wheelset didn't.
  • 2 1
Pretty sure his rim in that run was DT.....

When is YT going to be available in Canada or US?
  • 5 0
Sink tweeted something about that a few months ago, but I havnt heard anything else. I hope it's soon cause I've been holding off on getting a new dh rig so i could get a yt
  • 3 0
I bet it's in the works. I makes a lot of sense to sign Zink and sell product in North America. I can't happen soon enough!
  • 2 0
 Damn it! It not I!!!
  • 3 0
I read somewhere that they would be shipping to the states some time early 2015. Its early 2015, so shouldnt be to long now.
  • 2 1
Speciallized's patent with the FSR has expired and that was what was keeping German bikes from shipping to the US/Canada. I believe that YT, Canyon and even Radon will enter the American market in the near future
  • 2 0
Zink had a post on instagram say they would be in the U.S. and Canada in 7 months. That was 6 months ago they should be stateside sometime in February or March

It doesnt really make sense that they would sign kelly to target north america specifically, seeing as the whole kiwi thing.
  • 4 0
when are the germans (Y.T. and Canyon) going to understand Americans will eat up the low prices and great spec of their bikes
  • 2 13
flag tomtom80 (Jan 14, 2015 at 22:03) (Below Threshold)
@TFreeman Americans will probably eat up the low prices and great spec, but will they eat up the low build quality and other quality issues as well? Nothing in life comes cheap, not even YT bikes.
  • 7 1
@tomtom80 you know they leave out the middle man and give this margin to the end consumer. That is how they make the price difference. Not by building cheap or low quailty bikes. Same quality like most other bike brands - just no dealer margin you have to pay. So you are right, YT bikes are not cheaper than the others, but they just give the dealer price to the end consumer.
  • 3 1
that way they can spec them with all the best shit, and still be 2 or 3k less than an S-works demo, but way better. just not carbon, but who cares about carbon on a DH bike, i'd take low price and great spec first. I've never heard anyone complain about their YT or Canyon bike on the interwebs. that is why i am so anxious for them to sell them in the U.S.
  • 1 1
@TFreeman I am actually from Austria, but was to lazy to change the country when signing up. Trust me (or not, I don't really care) when I tell you YT has a quite some quality issues. Right here on PB you can find people from Germany complaining if you look closely enough. The difference is over here we're not that quick with lawsuits and attorneys, maybe that's what YT is afraid of, not some lame patent excuses.

@longhitter2000
You simply will not get Porsche quality if you pay Ford prices, no matter if you cut out the dealer margin or not.
  • 1 0
It would be awesome if YT set up a crowfunding scheme like Brewdog (equity for punks) so that riders could invest in their business to fuel faster growth. A true rider owned company!
  • 3 0

don't forget Yannick Granieri! is Andreu btw
  • 5 2
 Andrea ? Andreu * !
  • 2 1
 Andreo?
  • 19 0
Maybe they want to test all frame sizes. Small to 2XL.
  • 7 2
 Those fuckin Rampage commentators!
  • 10 0
Hope they finally start making these in proper sizes now. One draw back on their bikes have been the relatively small frames.
  • 2 1
I went for a Canyon instead of a YT for that same reason. Size L in the YT was a bit small for me
  • 8 0
Just when kelly sold me his old diamondback scapegoat to me, for a good price.. I asked him what his bike for this season is going to be, and he said "you just wait Razz " knew something was up!
  • 2 0
that wouldnt be his rampage bike from last year would it??!
  • 2 0
I assumed that his old bike where just beaten and beaten until they eventually turned to dust and blew away in the wind....
  • 3 0
haha good replies! nah, was his spare trail bike, barely used, most parts were still brand new, and gave me like a shitload of free shit, he is such a good guy! might have to hit him up for a yt noton Wink
  • 10 0
 Yeah Aotearoa represent!
  • 5 0
This is just wonderful. Im so happy for Kelly. A truly marvellous man. A delight to watch. This will be a terrific season. Im delighted. To be honest im on the verge of not being able to cope with this news.
  • 9 1
That's a great team! When are YT's available in the Americas?
  • 6 0
 that is a great question
  • 9 1
When will YT ship to the US? I'd really like to try one!
  • 5 2
Solid move. YT is stacking the talent. They are going to be a company thats going to sell a crap load more bikes. I was personally never really a fan of Diamond Back MTB's and I grew up on their BMX's.

I thought I heard somewhere they are going to start selling YT's in the US through REI of all places. Anyone know if that is true? I've heard the same about Ghost Bikes.
  • 5 0
I don't think that yt would do that it seems like big part of their company is the fact that you dea directly with the manufacturer. Cutting out the middleman allows for lower prices on the consumers end. But I could be wrong.
  • 2 0
That is also what I thought as well. However I thought I heard a rumor after rampage about that, but again it was a rumor and that is why I was curious.
  • 2 0
i pray to god it isn't REI
  • 3 0
So YT is going to make aluminium Tues with bigger wheels. Could be my next bike..

YT Tues Parts list

  • 1 0
I remember that carbon Tues featuring in Dirt in August, they reckoned it would be released Autumn/Winter time, it might be released when the rest of their 2015 range is out if all the testing and stuff Is done.
  • 1 0
YT also has an carbon tues comming... www.pinkbike.com/news/first-look-yt-tues-carbon-dh-racer.html

  • 4 1
Tactic move of YT, now they have at least one kickass freerider in each continent representing the brand: Lacondeguy - Granieri in Europe, Zink in US and Kelly in NZ.
  • 10 2
I think you need to google the term 'continent', where and how many there are...
  • 4 2
And last time I checked NZ and the U.S. Are not continents.
  • 4 0
"the usual goal of remaining stoked and basically punching life in the face!" Kelly is awesome.
  • 4 0
So this makes it sound like they will be available in AUS/NZ sometime soon? Anyone know when?
  • 3 0
1st bikes due in NZ first week Feb for pre-ordered customers. The balance to follow in March. Only RS spec'd bikes available in the initial order
  • 2 0

 Yeah Kellllly!
  • 1 0
 These bikes any good?
  • 3 0
YT tues's are super popular over here in the UK. It's not uncommon to meet a group of 3 or 4 lads on the uplifts all with a Tues and they all rave about them. They really do look the bussiness in the flesh. They are a lot of bike for not a lot of money. You could probably strip the bike and sell all the parts and make a profit. Its very difficult to ignore the Tues if your in the market for a new rig. I know I would like one.
  • 3 0
Yeah, they've been Dirt magazines DH bike of the year for two or three years now
  • 2 0
Not forgetting the Capra was their Enduro Bike of the Year
  • 4 4
YT unavailable in North America, lmao !!!!!!
  • 2 2
Yeah, but we have Whistler and for me its only 3 hours drive.
  • 2 0
3 hours from Bothell? Y'all cray. More like 3 hours from the 'Ham.
  • 1 1
Well I guess really meant the border. My concept of time is very relaxed. But yeah, it would be nice if right when you cross the border BAM! Whistler was on the right.
