Lars Sternberg Transition Covert 27.5
Lars Sternberg's Transition Covert 27.5 is the only bike we've seen so far running Shimano's new XTR 1x11 setup. Unfortunately, he injured his wrist during practice last night and wasn't quite sure how today's race would turn out.

2015 XTR
Shimano's new XTR uses an 11-40 rear cassette, which Lars had matched with a 36 tooth front ring. Shimano doesn't use the narrow-wide tooth profile that has become prevalent, instead relying on their own unique profile to keep the chain on without the need for a guide, although Lars was running a modified MRP guide just in case

The tracks are properly steep down here in Chile and riders like Nico Lau have planned accordingly. Shimano Saint four piston stoppers give him the the power needed to keep his Cube Fritzz under control.

Damn, that XTR chainring is ugly as sin.
  • 12 4
I'm sure they're awesome but I can't help think that they wouldn't look out of place on a walmart bike. I don't see why they can't make a removable spider like on the XO's so you can run whatever you want instead of forcing you to use some weird bolt pattern..
  • 3 3
form follows function... i mean if the whole bike look ugly ok but i think the chainring looks ok not pretty but ok
  • 9 0
It looks so solid that I thought it might be a pre-production model, but after clicking on the link the finished ones look much the same, but photographed in much more flattering angles. I think it'd defo get swapped out for a hope ring (if I stopped being so northern and actually forked out for a new drivetrain).
  • 3 2
it looks like an 90"s one
  • 10 2
 ...I like it...
  • 6 4
They think there's no problem if the product has nice function, even it looks ugly. Sorry Shimano, I'm Japanese but I go Sram.
  • 3 0
i keep just hoping it is just a prototype even though in there first look it still looked like this!
  • 3 0
 +1 for it being ugly.

But whatever... Not like I'm going to buy it. I'm happy with my 2013 XT kit, and will be for years.
  • 2 2
its shimano, it probably works very well despite looks people!
  • 2 2
Lets be honest here, is't not going to be cheaper than sram xx1 and the xx1 looks so sweet and dialed. So why would anyone go the gross shimano, not a big fan of this tbh. I'd go with the 2x10 xtr over that 1x11.

A women's bike is such a load of garbage. As if women dont vary in size. Humans can all have differnt combinations of torso lengths and leg legnths. We all can have wider and narrow sit bones. The only thing that is differnt about those womens bikes is the color schemes. Apparently women cant ride black market bikes due to the lack of frames in pastel colors and cursive text.
  • 10 1
And that is why it is just a bronson with different paint job!
  • 14 4
Chill out man. It's just marketing and anything that brings more people into the sport can't be bad, regardless of how it's marketed.
  • 8 1
While I agree that all women are different (I've learned that the hard way) women's bone structure in the hips and femurs is significantly different than in men, I disagree that one bike suits all and they could benefit greatly from a bike that is designed specifically for them, whether or not bike designers take in to account the ergonomic difference in women I don't know, I'm sure some just lower the stand over height and paint them cute pastle colours. I've had girlfriends that have been more comfortable on men's bikes than women's so who knows...
  • 2 1
yeah building on what dbox said, bikes are designed to fit as many different people across the population as possible unless you get a bike custom made its going to be a compromise. but a 'Small' man according to average body dimensions etc is going to be larger than a 'small' woman so it makes it easier to have two ranges to make it easier for consumers even if they are just labeled as a different size and have a narrower bar and a saddle designed to relieve pressure on the vagina , eg an xs mans bike being a s womans bike etc.
  • 6 0
^lol, I don't think that the one of the issue's with designing a bike specifically for women is to "relieve pressure on the vagina" lol. The biggest difference in skeleton structure is in the pelvis, women have a wider hips than men and the greater hip width influences the position of the femurs, which are often more angled than in men, giving them a slight X shape in the legs, but im sure that if you could design a bike to relieve pressure on the vagina they would be most greatfull.
  • 5 0
that is the specific reason for woman's saddles though.
  • 2 0
also i clearly mentioned that it was saddle that was designed to relieve pressure not the bike. There are loads of papers on it, its the same as bad saddle position/shapes causing erectile dysfunction in men, as you keep mentioning woman's differing pelvic bone structure surely you realize that that is one of the main driving factors behind men's/ woman's saddles.
  • 2 1
yeah i do agree with you, I think that we've also gone slightly off topic with regard to the article. I think we both agree that girls should have a greater range of bikes and products tailored to them, not just the same bike painted cute colours and labled as a girls model.
  • 4 1
I take it none of you have spent time with women that ride? Women have a different centre of gravity compared to men, and a completely different arm/leg/torso proportion to men.

At an entry level, I can agree women's bikes are maybe a poor choice. At a high performance level there is absolutely a difference.
  • 3 1
Your wrong Bret, yes men and women are different. That does not mean all women are the same and all men are the same. Some women have broad shoulders and small hips. some men have short legs and big chests. All people are different. Making a women's specific bike assumes all women are shaped the same. All people are shaped differently with little regard to gender.
  • 11 0
Women's bikes= Shrink it and pink it.
  • 3 1
@Fuglio - sex does play a role. females typically have a shorter torso and longer legs proportionally to men. typically also have smaller hands etc. there are biometric stats to back this up. as a result you will see women specific bikes with shorter effective top tube lengths, smaller grips etc...obviously not all women need to be on a woman's specific bike that's why I qualify the statements with "typically" but its not all smoke and mirrors marketing...
  • 1 0
No woman needs to ride a womens specific bike. Would you have me belive short top tubes and small grips are exclusive to a " womens bike"?

Or plz link the biometric studies you're quoting. I dont disagree that in general there some proportion differences between men and women. However the variety of sizes of all people includes varing heights, torso lengths, and yes proportions. Across differnt ethnicities the degree of proportional changes varies.

Would you be shocked to learn there are women and men with the same length torsos legs and hands?

So why a women's specific bike when there is no specific shape of women relitive to men
  • 1 0
I know of a few men who ride 'women's' frames, and I bet they feel their choice in those geometries are limited because they don't really want to be on pastel colours. It makes more sense to do it the direct sales way where you measure all your dimensions, stick them into a generator and it suggests which frame is best for you - then stop branding them women's and men's specific. You can then spec the saddle and grips that suit your bits and bobs. Whilst there are clearly biological differences when averaged, that doesn't mean there isn't cross-over.

I'll take either the Nomad or Reign and a hot Chilean wifey and I guess you'll never see me again.
  • 14 0
These narrow wide chain rings are soo good that nearly every rider with one runs a top guide Wink

Can't blame them really , why risk dropping a chain at all for the sake of a 50g ( random guess ) top guide.
  • 4 0
Also it looks like Adam Craig was running a bash guard to protect the XX1 chain ring - far enough! who would want to destroy one of those rings especially in a race or something.
  • 1 0
Good guess on weight, our basic MRP 1x guides range from 50-70g depending on model. An AMg like Lars, the Giant Team, and others are using is just over a hundred - a carbon version is also available. CG and the Nomads generally opt for the G3 for guaranteed security.
  • 8 0
What ? No pic of the new GT Sanction ?
  • 5 2
Fecking Giant, ditch the Reign and sell us all a Trance (which I own the 27.5 1).
Then !BOOM! 're-release the Reign.
Yes, I know, I don't have to buy one.
It's just annoying and lowers the re-sale value of our bikes.
  • 3 0
140-150 ain't enough for these single crown dh bikes(and now u can get more w/o much weight/pedal penalty)...return of the 7" bikes
look at gt, santa cruz, yt, specialized...uzzi redesign next for intense?
  • 2 2
I don't believe they ever stopped making the reign. It was the faith that they discontinued.
  • 3 0
they discontinued the reign, except the reign-x. All others got axe'd
  • 2 0
Plasticpylo put a pike or 36 on ur trance itll be close enuf
  • 6 1
i smell telemetry on those canyons
  • 5 0
 Or some patent pending linkage
  • 1 0
yeah, difficult to see, but I think there might be wires coming out of the bottom left of the cover?
  • 1 1
According to the 'deutsches Patentamt' it is something like the kona magic link with a remote actuation.
  • 3 0
 enduro-mtb.com/en/spy-shot-new-canyon-prototype-testing
With an extra fox lever on the bars it looks like Canyon are using the new remote lockout for the shock?

its certainly a Fox with a piggy back, but has it got a remote lockout, the cable from below is a big clue?
  • 1 0
Carbon frame! Spectral CF i think Smile
  • 2 0
 yes carbon 4 sure
  • 1 1
fabdemaere if it was already patented they wouldn't be hiding it.
  • 2 1
Most likely some electronic lockout / damper control on the shock (you can see wires sticking out the front).
  • 1 0
They had the spectral wrapped up last season too, turned out to just be a standard four bar 140mm bike. This is probably just a 160mm? carbon spectral, the cable is remote lock out. Prepare to not be blown away.
  • 2 2
lol how canyon thinks that people actually care about whatever linkage is under there, i couldnt care less
  • 1 0
There is a similarly looking thing on the handlebar of Craig's Giant and there are no wires connected to the shock...
  • 4 0
 I bet it's an engine!!!
  • 3 1
Whats with Jerome's handlebar setup?? Trigger on the right, and twist shift on the left? Weird setup cause its 1x and the dropper is hydraulic.
  • 11 0
grip shift is for the rear shock
  • 3 1
Sorry am i missing something? First paragraph says that "Fall is in full swing..." and "winter is on its way".

Arent we in spring?
  • 4 0
In the northern hemi its spring.
  • 3 0
 Love the canyon paint job!
  • 3 1
I would like to do things to that nomad.
  • 1 0
Yeah I'm waiting to demo one. A little concerned about how its gonna peddle up hill with that 65 HA though
  • 1 0
Alright, Im ready to see the new Devinci now!... Someone get that PIC!!!
  • 1 0
Well my guess is it ain't gonna be too far off the supposedly "one-off" bikes used by the Devinci guys at PMB, Can't see why else they'd use asymetric chainstays on that other than the possibly of it being used for a front mech on the production enduro bike
  • 2 0
Even Devinci mentioned to keep an eye out for it this weekend. Where it at!
  • 2 3
Lars Sternberg's cranks appear to be not-yet-announced new XT: no XTR branding, and "Deore" visible in the upper right detail shot...
  • 3 0
You can actually see where it says "XT" right below where you can see "Deore" Smile
  • 4 1
Well that sucks if I can't run a non-Shimano ring on XT cranks. I only ever buy XT. Those guys are starting to piss me off.
  • 2 2
Those are current XT crank arms with XTR proto rings/spider.
  • 2 1
The curvature is different between these and the current XT cranks (I'm looking at my bike, stored in my office). These look to be unannounced 2015s

Glad I got the 2013 cranks. Get a 3x9 crank and use a RF narrow wide. Cost me $80 for the crank, $30 for RF NW ring. Looks loads better than that junk.
  • 2 1
Nope, these are the current arms 100% for sure. Same curves exactly.
  • 2 0
 Current xt's
  • 3 0
Looks like you're right. Didn't know mine were out of date that fast. Smile
  • 3 0
 Guess I stand corrected!
  • 1 1
I don't care if those are current XT cranks or not, it is the spider that is important. If Shimano adopts that spider throughout the range then I/we can't fit aftermarket rings.
  • 1 0
You seriously think that nobody will make aftermarket rings?! This hasn't been a problem in the past with aftermarket ring available for all of the oddball XTR BCD's. These are definitely more complicated with an angle on the bolt surface but it can still easily be copied.
  • 1 1
Fair enough, but I will need to buy new aftermarket rings. I have new narrow-wide sitting around as a play with sizes There was no real need for them to do what they did. It's just pissing in the sand pit.
  • 1 0
If they have improved shifting like they did with Dura Ace then they had a great reason to do what they did. DI2 also relies on super stiff rings to give its perfect front shifting. I don't like the cost of XTR rings either but their track record of doing something odd with BCDs is pretty good. They've shown that they don't care about 1X and threw a few people a bone by offering a 1X option but it is really about 2X with Shimano. There are plenty of other options for the 1X crowd. Personally I'd take a Race Face Next SL crank to build a 1X system.
  • 1 0
I love the trust in the new fangled chain rings.
  • 1 0
anyone know any details about that custom link on Keene's enduro??
  • 1 0
 Santa cruz !cool
  • 1 1
Is that prototype reign a 27.5 or a 26" bike?
  • 1 0
 27.5
  • 2 0
650B and 160mm rear and front travel.....yeah Giant
  • 4 0
If they don't say anything, its 650b. The new default wheelsize.
  • 1 0
I was bummed they killed the reign this year, glad to see it back.
  • 1 0
Giant should go wild and make it 170mm travel at each end with the new either the new 36 or a charger damped lyric and also my it dedicated 1x.
  • 1 0
I'd want a pike, x01 and xt brakes. Make it happen.
  • 1 0
 This news is so 2013...
  • 1 1
 Why no Lefty Jerome?!
  • 4 1
 Because SRAM.
  • 2 1
I know about the new lefty. He doesn't use it because he's a SRAM sponsored rider so thus the pike.
  • 1 4
endure = freeride u can do and even race
