Thomas Genon isn't a name that many would have recognized before 2012, but that has changed after a breakout year that saw the Canyon rider from Belgium step into the limelight thanks to wins at both the 26TRIX dirt jump comp and the prestigious Red Bull Joyride slopestyle during Crankworx. Those wins, along with a few other solid results, saw him finish third over in the 2012 FMB World Tour rankings; not bad for a rider who hails from a country not known for its mountains - the highest point in Belgium sits at well under 2,500ft. The relative lack of big bike terrain at home didn't seem to bother Genon, though, as an early arrival and plenty of practice time aboard his 210mm travel Torque DHX culminated in a third place qualifying run and a top ten overall in the finals. It turns out that Genon ain't no dirt jumper lost in the desert.
Canyon Torque DHX details

• Aluminum frame
• Rear wheel travel: 210mm/195mm
• Wheel size: 26"
• FOX 40 Float RC2
• FOX DHX RC4 shock
• e*thirteen cranks, ring, chain guide
• Hayes Prime brakes

Suspension: Genon's Canyon Torque DHX utilizes a four-bar suspension layout that offers either 210mm or 195mm of travel via an adjustable lower shock mount, dubbed 'TrackFlip' by Canyon, that also tweaks the bike's head angle between 63° and 64°. As you might expect, Thomas went with the longer travel, slacker steering setting for the steep and and exposed terrain at Rampage, and the bike's FOX DHX RC4 shock was fitted with a relatively stiff steel spring to deal with the hard impacts. A nifty sag measurement system is integrated into the non-drive side rocker arm, with alignment numbers that correspond to an anodized red aluminum locater on the frame, although Genon was likely running far less sag than he would when aboard his Torque DHX in a bike park setting.

While Thomas went with a coil sprung shock out back, he is running FOX's new air sprung 40 Float RC2 fork up front, with the 203mm travel fork slid to its highest position in the fork
crowns to both slacken the bike even further and raise the bars up higher. Much like out back, the fork is set up stiffer than usual, and its fair to assume that compression damping has been added for the same reason. Balance between the front and back of the bike is key, regardless of if that means a softer or a stiffer setup all around.

Components: Genon depends on a set of e*thirteen's LG1R cranks that, although weighing in at a very competitive 661 grams, held up just fine to the big terrain that the bike saw over the last week, and a 36 tooth Guide Ring and a LG1+ chain guide were mounted during his time in the Utah desert. This is a fairly conservative setup compared to some of the guide-less drivetrains that we saw used during the event, but it's also one that made a lot of sense given how far Genon traveled to compete in the Rampage... it would have been a shame to see him suffer a mechanical that could have derailled his run.

Thomas' cockpit consists of a 780mm wide, low-rise ProTaper handlebar from Answer, as well as their ultra low One direct mount stem that is bolted up in its shorter 50mm setting, with the 160 gram stem's 20mm of drop helping to compensate for the fully extended FOX 40 Float RC2 fork. A set of Hayes Prime brakes, complete with 8" rotors, kept Genon's speed in check.

 That was a bazzinga, Sheldon.
  • 11 2
 Hahaha this guy ^^

obviously somone here has never ridden prime pros. hayes has had their ups and downs, and downs, and downs. but I promise that the prime comp and pros blow any avid I have ever tried out of the water, and can give any shimano brake one hell of a run for their money. insanely adjustable, insane stopping power, light, clean, dialed. dont hate on hayes. They have really improved their new generation of gear, wheels, brakes, suspension etc to a level equal of anything else i have ever ridden. Give the new stuff a chance, dont judge so quickly
  • 11 13
billy3197 you may be right for those but all the Hayes brakes ive ridden wear out super fast, feel like shit, and simply do not work.
  • 29 6
I really don't understand the level of props given to Lumpy's comment vs Viatch, they are both saying the same thing in a roundabout way yet got polar opposite props given! Strange.

mfbeast12- prime pros are a new era for them i swear. i rode a prime pro on my dh bike, which i rode every day in a bike park by my house, rode it for a week in whistler, then switched it to a dirt jump bike I ride five times a week. i havent had it serviced since i got it. I got it last december I think. thats not too bad by my standards

billy3197 sounds sweet, i'll give em a try if I see them on anything at a demo. gravelmans yeah, exactly, vitach is basically restating it in a blatantly obvious and dumbass way. if you make a dumbass comment, you're going to get negged.
  • 5 8
im not saying to be a hater, ive had hayes before and they are crap. it is what it is and im not after props or drops.
  • 3 2
I have some Hayes mx4 much brakes on my hard tail that I am very happy with

does anyone here own a canyon torque, and how do you guys like it? cause i am looking to upgrade my 09 glory and i really like how it looks,
  • 2 0
@stumper21 I have a 2012 torque frx speedzone and I really like it. It pedals well, and the suspension system grips pretty well. Its also pretty light, Iv got mine to be around the same sort of weight as a demo 8 carbon. The only down sides is that the rear triangle isnt the stiffest, and I recently managed to put a big dent in the downtube with the bumpstop on my fork. Not sure if it was just down to the speed of the crash or if the tubing is a bit thin, although it looks like the new ones have integrated bumpstops on the frame. Basically Id recommend getting one because even if you end up not liking the frame, the spec is amazing so you could always swap out the frame and have a really well specced bike for cheaper

hey dude i swaped your brakes what for hayes nooooooooo!!!

thanks dude, well i like my build on my glory, so i am thinking about just doing a frame swap

Hayes HFX9, mine will never die however much crap I give them, they move bike to bike and still work a dream. Hayes made these well...
  • 3 0
Same story here! 2006 HFX9, 2006 El Camino, 2007 mx2. All i did on them was to change pads and yearly bleeding. Built to last and power is pretty good too!
  • 5 0
I run a set of Stroker Aces's...I'm happier then a pig in shit with them
  • 3 0
 clearly they work fine...
  • 1 1
Had a set of Prime Pro's, can't say I was that pleased with them as both brakes ended up being warrantied, and while they were away I picked up a set of codes. I also found that the finish wasn't very durable and it chipped away very fast. Overall they were better than my old Hayes 9's, but I found that even my Elxir7's from my trail bike had more power than the primes. Maybe I just had a bad batch, but for me I wouldn't get another set.
  • 3 0
+1 for stroker aces, mine are 5 years old now and they work brilliantly, just some usual hayes lever wobble. Can't wait to try ace calipers and a prime lever.
  • 2 0
Well I had Stroker Trails, and they were better than my Hope M4's by miles, a million times better than my current Avid Elixr R and better than most other I have tried. I nearly bought some Primes, wish I had now..
  • 1 1
Oh that was another thing that really bothered me about the Primes, the lever wobble, it was quite bad!
  • 1 0
I have a Canyon Torque FRX. Absdolute bargain, and rides as good as any other similarly specced bike.
  • 18 2
 I LOVE THAT BIKE!

I'm so happy for Genon and his big acomplishment on his first ever Rampage, and if I'm right, next year he will be among the ones invited to finals!

I also feel great respect for Canyon and how they are doing things lately. I am seriusly considering getting this one (lower spec though...) as my next years bikepark bike
  • 8 0
Actually he rode rampage last year, just didnt make it to finals...
  • 1 0
 ooops, you're right!
  • 6 1
given he was not on as nice of a bike.
  • 3 6
Even if many of you love canyon, they are not as good as they look like. They use to brake after 2 years and their rear suspension isn't working that great. Stay with those bikes you get from your dealer or other brands like alutech, nicolai, liteville. These bikes are build to last forever!
  • 2 0
Trailmaster, I cant really comment on the strength thing as iv only had mine for a year, but the suspension system is pretty much the same fsr style setup as the specialized status, and that seems to get pretty good reviews.
  • 1 0
and mine is holding since 2009
  • 15 2
Genon killed it this year at rampage! For such a slopestyle kid going big at rampage is amazing.
  • 2 1
Meant to pro props you! Hate nep props by accident
  • 4 1
No offence to Thomas, but he really surprised me with his overall bike skills. Riding at rampage like he did, coming from Belgium where the biggest drop is a 10 feet drop. chapeau ! Big Grin
  • 1 0
Such a quality run he had : original line, indian air, step up backflip, lots of air time, good flow... I was surprised th he got no more than a 72 if I'm right !
  • 9 0
Canyon makes such good priced bikes for what you get. Look good too.
  • 4 0
and the riding is incredible with !
  • 6 1
such a sick looking bike, might me one of the best looking ones I have seen!!!
  • 2 1
the new answer bars (and all of the hays stuff for that matter) has been killing it.
  • 2 0
It looks like the last year torque but they have bended up the downtube that was straight from the BB to the HT. Love the '14 new Canyon Spectral, such a sexy trail bike, but I really was expecting something new in the DH side.
  • 1 0
This is new, last years is the torque FRX, this is the Torque DHX with a new front triangle and 10mm more travel
  • 1 0
Since a few days you can buy this machine: www.canyon.com/_en/mountainbikes/bike.html?b=3269

Pretty much the same components (except the rear shock and some stuff). The parts are pretty much near to perfect. There is no better stuff to put on a DH-rig...
  • 8 3
that downtube and the whole frame in general look BURLY.
  • 9 0
 That's perfect for Rampage
  • 1 0
you can see it in the first pic and the last one on the left; what is that chip with the 3mm bolt for? ive never seen anything bolt onto the top tube like that...
  • 1 0
its either a go pro mount, or maybe a place for a shifter if you were planning on running this bike with a single crown freeride set up and doing tail whips and didnt want to deal with shifter cables getting twisted up. top tube and downtube shifter mounts are sometimes bolted onto waterbottle cages on slope or DJ bikes with more than one speed
  • 1 1
I think it is for a dropper post, my Torque FRX has that chip and then also has an exit on the bottom of the top tube next to the seat post, and the bike comes with a rubber cable guide to go into the hole under the chip
  • 5 0
 Those bars. So low.
  • 3 2
I'm pretty sure the frame says 185mm and 203 mm not 195 and 210 the article mentions. There also might be some mods not mentions in the article. Just pointing out the discrepancy.
  • 2 0
I have made my research and that might be because those are last years flip-chips. This years bike (2014) has 195/210mm of travel according to Canyon's website
  • 1 0
If you go onto canyons website the one that you see in the shop section is last years torque FRX (203mm travel), this is next years DHX (210mm) that hasnt been released yet and can be found in the 2014 section at the top of the home page
  • 1 0
pls check again, all DHX models are visible (price, equipment and geometry),and can be ordered but delivery time is far still :-(
  • 3 0
good job genon! i would like to see what Mcgazza was shredding on!
  • 2 0
Some kind of diamond back. I think its safe to say the prototype is working
  • 1 0
Well, I knew that much, but I was just wondering, because I really like db's bikes.
  • 4 1
How do they get the bike to stand up by itself for the picture?
  • 3 0
 "Yer a wizard, Canyon!"
  • 2 0
Let it go and take a picture...I think levy said that in a lapierre article.
  • 4 0
a photographer did that to take a picture of my baby...
  • 1 0
 Hahaha howd that go...
  • 1 0
Get someone hold the tire, then release it, at the same time the photographer takes a pic, then grab the bike. Simply done!
  • 1 0
Is it just me or does it blatantly say 203LO and 185HI on the bike? Unless I'm mistaken that usually indicates 203/185mm of rear travel?
  • 7 6
wah wah wah 29er blah blah 650b wah wah- wait, oh it has 26" wheels. Never mind.
  • 2 0
I thought Genons run was great. Lots of style and he looked smooth.
  • 1 0
This is the components I'd put on a bike. Fox 40 float and E13 lg1r are on my buy list when I get a better job.
  • 1 0
Bars so low..... Bike so long.... RAMPAGE MACHINE!!!!! De racer es my cousin eh!... Purpose built killer!!! Good show..
  • 1 0
bike looks sick! i think it's just a little too bright he should have sticked to the black/neonorange color scheme
  • 1 0
He comes from the same 'mtb-school' as Martin Maes, so consider moving to belgium an send your kids there!
  • 1 0
Fox 40 with the stanctions maxxed. How long is his headtube ?
or is he running some custom fork crowns
  • 1 0
I dont like those rims! i use them for some street action and i bend the shit out of them. I can break anything Big Grin
  • 1 0
same linkage as my old Azonic B-52!
  • 1 0
am i the only one wondering how to bike is standing
  • 1 0
they let go and grab a quick picture...bike doesnt have to stand for long!
  • 1 0
Soooo nice. Looks like a nicer version of the scott fr frame
  • 1 0
210mm of travel??? Well I must be in heaven!
  • 2 0
 or in the bike market...
  • 1 0
 Talk about caliper washer stacking!
  • 1 0
Is it me, or does that bike look really long?
  • 1 0
Top notes for speed guaranteed with Hayes brakes.
