An Update From Aaron Gwin

Jan 23, 2016 at 0:32
by Mike Levy
It's not the big news that so many people are waiting for, but Aaron reached out last night with an update on how things are coming along, and to say thanks to the fans that have showed so much support. And no, he wasn't ready to comment on any of the team rumors that have been making the rounds.

The big questions are who, why, and when, but Aaron was only willing to speak about the latter, saying ''I'm hoping that the news will be released in about a week, but I have no control on the final decision." There has been talk of some major companies involved, and my hunch is that this might be making for some complicated contract dealings that would explain the delay.
Gwin QUOTE

bigquotesHey everyone,

Just wanted to give you guys a quick update on what I've been up to. I realize that it's been a while since I've released any news and a lot of you would like to know my plans for next year. First, I'd just like to say a huge thank you for your excitement, the amount of interest that I've gotten during this new step in my career has been crazy. I'd hoped that I could have announced the news weeks ago, but it just didn't work out. As you can imagine, there are a lot of pieces that need to be put together when building a top-level program, from the ground up. I've only had a few short months to take this on and I've done my best to make sure that every last detail was attended to at the highest level possible. That being said, I'm very happy with how the whole team has come together. I'm also super excited to begin a relationship with a few new personal sponsors.

Well, that's it for now. Big thanks again to everyone for the support during this time. I've got a team photo/video shoot to do next week and then we'll be ready to release the goods! Hope you guys have a great weekend, can't wait to see some of you at the local races very soon!

-Aaron Gwin

AARON GWIN JOINS CONSIGNOR YT
Dimitri Lehner - World Cup overall winner Aaron Gwin left Sponsor Specialized - to the surprise of the scene. But with what the bike wants quick Ami 2016 points? Now it's out: Gwin runs the bikes of the consignor YT.

David vs. Goliath: Who would have thought that the Up & Coming label YT would the manufacturer giants Specialized relax from the Frankish Forchheim its fastest horse: Downhill superstar Aaron Gwin of California. The surprising if only because the Forchheimer took gradually a freeride star after another under contract. Meanwhile, for example, drive Rampage winner Andreu Lacondeguy, FMB-World Champ Cam Zink, Allstar Robbie Bourdon, Super Flipper Kelly McGarry, double front flipper Bienve Alba and FMB-Star Yannick Granieri for Young Talent Industries.

As the scene asks legitimately as the small German shipper can afford these celebrities and now even comes with the fastest bikers in the world at the World Cup at the start. A co-operation should make it possible. Together with Red Bull, KTM Motorcycles and Audi wants to stem the costs, maximize marketing and heave the support on a level not witnessed YT.

The fact that a motorcycle manufacturer for the Downhill World Cup interested, reminiscent of Honda's commitment about ten years ago, when the Japanese with silver custom cars and Greg Minnaar as a figurehead celebrated great successes.

Exciting, a Worldcup hardly be called the first race in Lourdes, France (9-10. April). We ask ourselves: Will it create Gwin to continue his winning streak on the new bike? And what if not? Specialized had to experience a marketing Gau, as for Gwin Trek joined Specialized after his serial successes and contributed in an unprecedented fiasco. Gwin has been completely passed on the Specialized Demo and ended the season among the also-rans. Only with the new demo, he made it back to his usual form and was the Downhill World Cup again dominate.

@randybadger Hogwash. People on multiple articles and multiple threads are complaining and badmouthing Gwin for not announcing things sooner. If he can't announce yet, he can't announce! He doesn't have an obligation to satisfy anybody's curiousity, but given the grumblings going on, I think it's pretty cool of him to acknowledge the attention and apologize for not letting the cat out of the bag yet.

If you can't say anything useful don't say anything. He acted like a dick when he left trek. As far as I can see leaking silly little teasers isn't the attitude of a pro sportsman, it's just being a dick.
We are all passionate about the sport and are all keen to know what's going on. This on going Bullshit wouldn't be happening at all if there weren't silly little drawings and none statements flying around the media.
What do we know now that we didn't three months ago? Nothing. But somehow the conversation keeps appearing.
It is getting very tired.

What's sure is that it won't be YT. I called the factory in Germany (+49 (0) 9191 736305 0 ) ... and they told me they had the capital for it, but absolutely no interest in beeing represented in the DH racing world because they sell already tons of new bikes each year (didn't tell number) due to freeride legends who ride YT, such as Lacondeguy, Zink, McGarry, Granieri, etc... I asked for clues but apparently they didn't know more than us. Overall it's pretty logic, if they had taken Aaron, they would have had to take other riders too, Gwin was not gonna make a team on his own. Can't wait to know

People do care. PB visitors mention it in the most unrelated topics, why expect here that no one cares? Why even read the article if you don't care? It's been a while that he left Specialized now and a lot of people apparently expected the news on a new team to drop earlier. Aaron Gwin knows and instead of keeping silent until everything is sorted, he published this release telling "Thank you for the excitement. Unfortunately I'm in no position to tell you much more but things are looking good." I think that is fair. If you don't care, don't read. If it wasn't the news you were expecting, that's in the nature of it. If you're seriously bothered by news like this you'd better not take chances and not read anything with his name in the header. Just wait until April. The bike he rides by then is the bike he'll be riding this season.

He probably thought the specialized thing would work out and when they wouldn't accept his salary request he left/dumped him. everyone who is talking trash on Gwin, next time you are looking for a job just take wayless than you are worth or don't ask for a raise at your current job. We all know how complicated it can be to start at a new company and sometimes it takes weeks to finalize everything, try doing that with several different company's at the same time. Keep hating Gwin and what he is doing and the contracts for top level DH riders will always be way under what they should be. I think this could be ground breaking and he might be bringing other riders on with him now or in the future. Keep joking about his religion as well because that's very mature and shows your intelegence and lack of tolerance for others choices

Ye, but with "new personal sponsors" it might conflict with a Downhill Squad who will probably use the same brands.

And with Cube making a replica of the Action team bikes, Team Wanty group, etc. they are probably also looking to do the same for their 2017 dh line up/Cube Global Squad model. "Personal Sponsors" seems to conflict when planning an OEM production.

The trouble is when you have an athlete pursuing a sponsor from a different filed of sports and one that they have an interest in is how do you know that you're not going to loose your athlete to the other discipline.

Aside from appearing in complied edits from UCI DH races, what other video edits did we see from Gwin in 2015?
I cant remember any except for riding DH on a KTM motorbike.
I bet that was a huge frustration for Specialized.. many on here would suggest their most marketable athlete, however he spent his time making a video for a different company capitalizing on the success he has for riding DH yet completely ignoring the fact that Specialize pay his wages.

I'd wager that any contract negotiations he is in include a number of caveats that he must produce a number of brand specific edits/exposure and that there will be penalties if he fails to do so.

Lets say that YT pony up part of the cash he wanted from Spec.. but he has to get KTM to pony up the difference. He then goes and hurts himself dicking about on a KTM moto and can't race for the season.. YT are absolutely going to want non-appearance penalties written into his contract.
Big bucks have to come with a big guarantee of return on the investment.

Of course, I'll stick with the belief that he's dun messed up and is out whoring like an std ridden prostitute trying to sell any trick in his bag to get himself to this magic number that he came up with when he calculated his theoretical worth to specialized....
I honestly hope I'm proved wrong and that he is indeed paving the way for athletes to diversify their sponsorship opportunities with brands outside the obvious... hurry up and wait I guess. Still, we'll never know the numbers or the details.

the top specialized bike costs 2x as much as the top TY, would love for him to come in with a YT and destroy it this year, it would be a total slap on the face for those marked up bikes

Aaron, we don't believe the number you're asking for is quite reasonable, how about we settle on the figure we originally proposed?

Yeah, well, watch me put an article on Pinkbike about absolutely nothing and get more hits than WC final coverage!!!

I bet he's going to be Troy Lee's main dude and ride that Santa Cruz/Sram..come on now, he's the All American Golden Boy!

It's stories like this that highlight the difference between the mountain bike 'media' and the media in other sports. Clearly there are people in the industry that know where he us going but the mountain bike media doesn't really break any news. They always wait for official press releases and largely stay out if the rumor game. Which is the complete opposite of how most sports media operates. In other sports there are website and reporters who only job is to dig up dirt on where players are going to sign or who might get traded etc. The mountain bike media acts more like a marketing tool for the industry itself as opposed to a news outlet.
  • 9 1
Hello Aaron, we know already what your plan is.

Geez guess I've to join the fray here on PB. I have a great deal of ambivalence toward this guy. On the one hand there is no question of his remarkable ability on a DH bike. I applaud him for attempting to move the sport in the right direction as far as what athletes on mountain bikes get paid. I'm sure Paul Bas would agree. Nobody shows up at a WC mtb event to see the board of directors for some bike company. I don't however view Aaron as a great ambassador for an international sport. He is a religious conservative American, which unfortunately puts him in the political camp of all that is viewed as unfavorable about America throughout the world. Not that being religious is necessarily a bad thing, but here in America it generally puts you in the camp of the demagogue crazies like Trump, Cruz, et all. It's unfortunate but true. On top of that he seems to take himself waaaaay too seriously and his personality on camera reflects that. Just compare him to someone like Peaty or Minnar and you'll get what I'm saying. So yeah.. As an American I feel somewhat ambivalent that this is the guy representing us to the rest of the world in my favorite sport. He doesn't seem to be a likable character at all.

"As you can imagine, there are a lot of pieces that need to be put together when building a top-level program, from the ground up. I've only had a few short months to take this on and I've done my best to make sure that every last detail was attended to at the highest level possible."
This statement right here makes me think that HE'S starting HIS OWN team.
The YT rumors would make more sense then to the people who are wondering how YT could afford to pay him and start a WC team at the same time.
It may be that his team will be riding YT bikes, and his backers are KTM and Audi.
Heck, some SX/MX'ers have done it. Reed, Stewart, Pastrami I believe...

Have you guys seen the new Sam Hill edit? It's awesome and he's looking super fast for 2016!
  • 5 0
Personally I don't really care.....I hope him well and all but there's others teams I'm more interested in.
  • 3 1
This sounds more like, dang, I got greedy and now I am probably not riding 2016.
  • 4 1
Who cares. Did the claw get this type if coverage when he left specialized? Know what, who cares.... Bike are meant for fun not meant for a plot line in some super fan soap opera.
  • 2 0
Would a Redbull factory race team be so out of the question? It seems they are ever increasingly getting involved with the bike sports, whatever that may be, and the fact Gwin has at times genuinely seemed to have wings.

They have the money, he is already a great brand ambassador and would allow him free reign of bike choices, though my guess is he would be riding a KTM rather than the much blogged YT.
  • 1 0
Seems implausible to me. It'd be weird to have some athletes that are "their" team competing against other Redbull-sponsored riders.
  • 2 0
So half of the riders, including last year WC winner and the whole Atherton squad switched teams without any broohaha (not to mention mad dog and his companions) but this soap just keeps on going. It's MTB for peat sake, not F1 or some other big money snobby sport. Let's not turn it into that. I wish we had more of these guys www.pinkbike.com/video/422894
  • 3 0
More attention equals more money to riders. They deserve more money so don't bitch about the media attention. It's what earns riders money
  • 2 0
To be fair the switches that you mention (Bruni and the atherton's) we not team switches. Those riders all stayed on the same teams, just changed frame/title sponsors of the teams.
  • 2 0
What exactly is the deal with www.freeride-mountainbike.com in the first place? Their article seems to be why so many people think the YT thing is a done deal but is there any credibility to this website in the first place? How many here had even heard of that site before this story?
  • 1 0
The YT rumor has been around for a long time, like a couple months.
  • 2 0
This is just dragging on. The guys making a huge hoo-ha about why bike he's going to be riding. Yes he has the credentials but old people f*&k faster than this guy gets info out.
  • 2 0
" As you can imagine, there are a lot of pieces that need to be put together when building a top-level program, from the ground up." I think he teams up with a brand that didn't have a WC-Team before. YT?
  • 1 0
another german mountain bike website posted another interesting fact.
CUBE another german bike brand will have a new world cup team with two members, both speaking english?!
This could be the answer, why they built a new downhill bike for 2016...
we will see...
  • 1 0
From Trek to Specialize to where ever I'm sure he'll perform the same way. I doubt he'll ever choose a company where the bike he rides doesn't feel right for him.

I guess a part of the reason why this is getting such huge attention (aside from him being the best in the sport currently) is we're all curious to know which company(s) is willing to give him the pay he's requesting.
  • 3 1
I liked my YT cause it was relatively cheap and under the radar in a world full of Bromads. My YT told me all this attention is making it self-conscious. It'll blow over little buddy....we're still an underdog.
  • 1 1
Mittlerweile fahren z.B.

Doesn't matter if Gwin rides YT next season or not, everybody talks about this company now. No need for commercials for YT bikes anymore, mtb-forums has done that job.
  • 1 0
I think Martin Whitley (ex Honda and TWR) will be running Gwins new team and Laurie Greenland (jr WC champ, World champ and ex TWR) will be on the team as well. There's still been no news on who he will be running for this year.
  • 2 0
He needs to come out with another update in a couple of weeks to say that he's still not revealing anything but he appreciates the support. And, keep doing that every two weeks for like 6 months
  • 1 0
I have some friends, who are here from Sweden to train and are sponsored riders in Europe, that claim they were riding out near Lake Elsinore (SoCal) and saw Aaron Gwin riding out there on a YT and wearing Alpinestars clothing.

  • 1 1
The partnership with specialized finished because his head was up his arse and thought he was worth stupid amounts of money. For the people on here who think he should get paid more because he's worth it. How much is he worth? How much should he be paid? I bet he won't be getting the same money that he asked specialized for. So bring on the neg props for saying it like it is for the American golden boy.
  • 1 1
Gwin is the future...What he is doing right now is very cool. It is going to change the sport in a big way for the better for all the racers. This Dude is a pioneer. Enjoy this moment right now because it is going to be much bigger than Palmer with his motogear. Cant wait to see him a Fontana...Will it be a Sprinter or a full blown Peterbilt?

What an incredible politician he could be.
  • 10 9
Gwin on Starbucks for sure, it's obvious
  • 3 6
This means the deal isn't done right? It might not be YT. Since they have no DH team, there would be no conflict with other sponsors. That at least could have been announced. However, if it is Santa Cruz, for instance, there could have been conflict with him getting on The Syndicate and still running DT Swiss wheels as an example. The local races he's talking about must be the Fontana Winter series, which there will be one tomorrow. Be cool if he rides a blacked out model so then we all know the bike.
  • 10 5
Gwinn is unlikely to be "on a team". He just picking up frame/ part/ etc sponsors to be a one man band and needs to works out the details by the sounds of it. Much more freedom, much less conflict
  • 8 1
His own words - "I'm very happy with how the whole team has come together."

Unfortunately, he won't race locally until the team is announced.

This is why he warrants big bucks!!! He's been the talk of the community for months. Building hype. Simple strategies to good affect.
  • 6 6
KTM bikes? He been going on about how good his motocross bike is. Any secret development out of Austria on a new DH bike?
  • 5 0
I would't be surprised. A company willing to step outside the box and pay the big bucks for a top level rider to develop their equipment. They've done it with Dungey, why not with Gwin.
  • 1 0
I agree. ive been saying it too. who has more money than specialized and trek combined? KTM! who is willing to do what ever it takes for their athletes to win? KTM! they already make bicycles. they have made a DH bike before, so why not let Gwin design is own.
  • 2 0
ktm bikes and ktm motorbikes are 2 different companys, they just share the same name
  • 1 0
Duel benefit, Ride the KTM DH rig but get sponsorship from KTM motorcycles?

negative they didnt do it with Dungey, they did it with DeCoster and he brought Dungey over to KTM, not KTM.. DeCoster is as responsible for developing the 450 as much as any rider, along with Dungey.
