Australian National Series - 8 Bike Checks

Australian National Series - Bike Checks

No, this is not a new downhill sled from Yeti, but rather an SB6C frame that Jared has outfitted for the weekend's race. The most obvious difference between this and his SB6C enduro bike is the FOX 40 up front that slackens the bike out, but there are a few more subtle changes as well. A coil sprung shock was sub'd in for the Float X CTD that is usually bolted to his 152mm travel Yeti, and there's obviously no need for a dropper seat post at last weekend's event. The bike's gearing is both higher and tighter to match its purpose, while the rims are the very same that we've seen him use in stage races - DT Swiss' EX471s. A Garmin GPS unit is mounted just behind the stem, and you can bet your last dollar that he and his teammate, Richie Rude Jr, have compared their race runs to see where the difference was.

Another SB6C and another podium place, with Richie Rude Jr taking his so-called enduro race bike to a second place finish behind Graves. Again, a coil shock in place of the Float X CTD that we normally see, as well as a 40 up front. That nude carbon fiber look never gets old, either.

Michelle Crisp took a third on her aluminum Norco Aurum, and if you take a closer look you'll see that her bike is sporting a set of Race Face's mega-light SIXC cranks and a Gamut chain guide.

Giant's new carbon Advanced Glory had a lot of people excited when images of the production bike were released in mid-February, but let's not forget that the aluminum frame is just 245 grams heavier and features the exact same geometry and travel numbers. Thomas Crimmins seemed to be getting along just fine with his.

Is there such a thing as a V10 that doesn't look good? Graeme Mudd strikes a pose with the bike that he rode to a third place finish in the Elite class.

Here's something different: Ben Dengate's Bilt Eight uses a single pivot, linkage activated suspension layout that the Australian company refers to as 'CT link', and the bike features long and slack geometry that can be raked out to a 62.5 degree head angle. It also has clearance out back for both 26'' and 27.5'' wheels, and comes with Cane Creek's Double Barrel coil shock.

Jackson Frew would have obviously liked to win the U19 class (he took second), but he can take some consolation in having what was likely the most colour co-ordinated bike on the track. ENVE's M90 wheels with colour-matched decals and SRAM's X01 DH drivetrain have his GT Fury looking good.

Australian National Series - Bike Checks

While Conner Fearon's prototype downhill bike got a lot of people's attention (by the way, word is that it's a geometry mule for a new Operator DH bike), Tegan Molloy quietly took her production Operator to the top step of the Elite Women's podium.

Those yetis. My god, stop showing porn on a public site.

When someone wins DH races with an Enduro bike, it makes you really respect the bike and the rider!

I think if people are winning on shorter travels bikes, it kinda shows that the course should be gnarlier. But yeah, those yetis are damn fine...

meh graves could have one on a hardtail with a 20t chainring , hes a machine man scculpted into pure leg muscle and super lungs .

Graves' and Rude's bikes are very nearly the same, but its weird how Graves' ride looks, like, ten times better. Maybe its the graphics, better matched parts, or the angle. Or maybe its the Graves' aura. I have a SB66c and damn do I feel inadequate.

 good eye, man

Its a pretty far reach to call these Yetis enduro bikes even with 152mm in the rear.

When someone wins a DOWNHILL race on an ENDURO bike then I only question whether or not it is actually a proper DH course
  • 2 0
"The bike's gearing is both higher and tighter to match its purpose" OOH REALLY!?!? because i'm pretty sure Jared "Crazy bastard machine animal rider" Graves already uses a ridiculously large ring and ridiculously small road cassette.
  • 3 1
"a proper DH race" - well, yes, it was called a National DH race, people came, they paid, they raced, there were spectators and winners - what other validity is needed? The photos of the race don't make it look like a walk in the park. Hot and dusty make for different challenges than muddy sloppy rock gardens. Run what ya brung and don't whine.

graves runs a normal cassette i think ... probly just 11-36 , mby a 40-42t one up thingy, or he probly walks up most of the courses

It does say prototype on the downtube/BB area of Grave's bike so it's probably more downhill orientated than it makes out to be!

All I know is if there was also a biggest calf contest, you would still see the Yeti boys in position #1 and #2. I'm pretty sure their muscle mass and skills are the reason they podium. Bikes are sick though!!!

crimmons' white and gold glory looks pretty nice

 lol

Not going to lie, I scrolled up looking for a white and gold Glory vaguely remebering there wasn't one...damn troll of a dress.

Is the Yeti SBC6 the most capable frame on the market?? I love the idea of a do all bike, would still need my hardtail for the skatepark but damn.
  • 1 0
Could be. I'd really love to know if the Yeti bikes are completely stock in terms of carbon layup. One would imagine not...
  • 5 0
 Canfield Balance!!
  • 6 0
Carbon Layup is 100% the same as any production SB6. The production bikes were made to be identical to this, but with paint. The bike that Jared has here is the Exact same frame that he won EWS Winterpark and Whistler. So i'd say it has proven itself pretty well.

Yeti have made exellent frames always !!!!!!

canfield The One... although they don't make them anymore.

thanks @shaun7005 that's good to know. One might think a headtube would need different reinforcements to run a Fox 40, but if that's the same exact bike I'd call that a vote of confidence.
  • 1 0
@shaun7005 What does the head angle net out at, with that Fox 40 setup, versus a 180mm fork?
  • 2 0
came out at 64 degrees with the 40's. Haven't measured it with 180mm, but it's 65 degrees with a 170mm fox 36 fork.
  • 10 1
is there a link to connor fearon's prototype operator that they mentioned? i might just be confused.... thanks
  • 1 0
Yeah I was a little disappointed myself.
  • 1 0
It's the new 650b precept, Kona's instagram account posted up confirmation of it today.
  • 1 0
 Prototype or precept 200?
  • 1 0
 Replacing the 200
  • 10 3
JG is a total beast!!! which proves to us all that you don't a huge DH rig just the right skill to land it! so much respect to that man
  • 38 0
That's exactly why we do need dh bikes. Because we are not JG.
  • 5 0
Dude is exceptionally fit, goes without saying. However, a full day riding the bike park on a full DH rig will hurt a little less than if you did the same amount of riding on a SB6c or similar 6" bike. He's doing a couple of race runs a day, balls out fast but still less than (I'm guessing) 30 minutes of actual course riding each day.

 "Conner Fearon's prototype downhill bike"

Seriously? Pictures or GTFO
  • 1 0
 It's just a precept with 650b wheels
  • 3 0
That black Supreme Operator is so sexy!!!!
  • 1 0
Great work Ben. Awesome to meet you out shooting on the weekend. I better get some shots up hey!
  • 1 0
The Yeti's are obviously the most interesting of the checks above, but I am left wondering: offset bushings? Anglesets?
  • 2 1
Doubt it. They're already super slack and aggressive geo- I don't think they need any help in that department.
  • 3 1
 Aluminum
  • 2 1
Never mind the yetis Who the hell would knock off a Knolly...
  • 1 0
Guessing yetis 303 DH bike is done now... Haha
  • 1 0
What is the rear tire on Graves bike?
  • 3 4
 I loved Yeti Bikes !!!!
  • 12 0
till you saw that Bilt, huh?
  • 5 0
That BILT is very nice. Seen a few of them in the flesh, and the ano blue frame is very pretty indeed.
