Pinkbike Poll: XC, EWS or World Cup DH?

Jul 20, 2015 at 13:08
by Mike Levy
Watching the world's best racers is an eye-opening experience that's both awe inspiring and humbling, be it on the sidelines of a top level cross-country event, a live feed of some World Cup downhill action, or a video wrap-up of the weekend's EWS race. These competitors are all around badasses at mountain biking in general - Nino can leave you behind you on the descents, Gwin can out climb you, and Clementz or Graves can drop you everywhere - but they're absolute beasts when it comes to their chosen niche. There's just something special about watching at athlete perform at his or her best in the genre that they've spent most of their adult life training at, and while it might sound cliche to call it inspirational, that's exactly what it is.

I don't know about you guys, but I find myself itching for some park laps on a big bike after watching the pros hang it out on a taped off DH track on the other side of the world. And scrolling through the photos from an Enduro World Series stop will have me wanting to spend the rest of my life in knee pads and aboard a a slacked out 6" travel bike. Hell, I'll even feel like going out to do intervals after seeing Kulhavy or Schurter slug it out, but I might be in the minority on that one.

Pinkbike

But, assuming that all were on at the same time, the coverage was equal, and that you could only watch one event, what genre of top tier mountain bike racing would you prefer to take in: the unholy fitness and strategy of a World Cup cross-country race; the balls out speed, skill and guts that are on display in a World Cup downhill event; the versatility and talent that EWS racers put to use on their mid-travel bikes over varying terrain?

DH definitely has the most action overall. Enduro TV coverage is pretty much non existent and XC is XC.
  • 56 12
 EWS coverage needs Redbull...
  • 96 2
The thing with EWS is that it is the entire day and even two days mostly with multiple stages I really can't bother wasting two days on watching pros ride instead of riding my self. I think a 20 min highlight vide at the end of the weekend like it is now is brilliant.
  • 16 1
I think a few live stages would be a great addition though. They could pick the longest and most exciting stages and live cast those so people can be part of the action.
  • 6 2
 Red Bull covers XC.
  • 31 18
Xc is actually pretty amazing to watch, and has equally or better coverage as dh.
  • 12 1
This is probably the wrong place to say that XC is equally as exciting to watch. Its kind of like watching F1 (which I love), you have to be interested to actually watch the entire race with full attention. DH WC coverage has me on my toes most of the time

You're on PB, why is this even a question? Go ride your bike, DH!
  • 15 1
there should be a 4th choice..I'm a pure DH rider by heart but I love watching the EWS and XC world cup as well..in fact..I love anything on two wheels that involves dirt..screw the choices..I'll watch everything..
  • 10 7
XC is by far the most compelling to watch, with DH by the time the top10 ride we've seen the same sections of track ripped apart by a very good rider over and over again and I'm bored of it by then. Wheras the XC races (good ones, where there is a battle going not, not just someone who's gone 2 mins clear and is riding home to glory unchallenged) tend to build and become tense as they go on, kulhavy and shurter at Novo Mesto this year was superb, shurter v absalon at alpstad was pretty special aswell, both races were battles that went on for 6-7 laps to be decided in the final lap, alpstad came down to the final corner!
  • 1 0
Agree with Nathan - the twenty minute highlight is fine, but it would be a step forward to have some final stages screened live.
  • 58 5
4X is the ultimate mountain bike spectator sport, but seeing as we aren't allowed it any more (cheers UCI) I'll watch the DH.
  • 9 0
Yeah man! But hey, we've got XCE! HA HA!!
  • 5 1
Yeah uci screwed xce also sadly
  • 7 0
I'd love if someone brought it back except instead of making it basically a BMX race with elements of dh made it a full on downhill track which four people could race down.
  • 8 0
I have no faith in the UCI to capture the spirit of mountain biking. That being said, I did get hooked on World Cup DH the last two seasons. This year they are spacing them out a bit too far for my liking, making it harder to hold interest from race to race. I think a race every two weeks for five races, with maybe a 4 week break during the hottest months, then a return with 4 races every two weeks followed by the World Championships would be a great seasonal format. I can't figure out a good way to televise enduro or XC. I wish xc was still long format racing like 20-40 miles but not laps on 1.5 mile tracks. Really show the drama of a mile or 2 mile climb and the strategy that takes climb fastest and save the most energy. Then a prolonged downhill which is long enough and technical enough that it becomes more than just a fitness test. Enduro could be covered well over a few days, spending more time on each stage so that more cameras could be set up. giving the viewer time to learn the top riders names and background story. They could film a few of the most exciting track sections as well as the finish and the point standings. and then conclude the race with results and podium show on sunday.
  • 17 0
4x is the missing category in this poll and in reality and also the one, I think, that many would choose for watchability and excitement. Maybe UCI is just textspeak for U Complete Idiots.
  • 2 0
@championP idk dude, the short lap format of XCO is the only thing that makes decent live coverage or spectator participation possible. The drama of a long climb would be cool, but I think there's been plenty of drama the last two seasons, especially now that the courses are getting techy. If the loops get too much longer then the coverage and fan access gets worse, and then nobody will care about it. There's always races like Downieville for the long format stuff.

If I could only choose one, I'd pick DH. But I never miss an XC race and I like it almost as much.
  • 2 0
 What is 4x?
  • 3 0
Four Cross racing. Four riders at a time out of a gate, then basically a rough downhill bmx track with some mtb bits chucked in sometimes and first one to the bottom gets a high five.
  • 5 0
Basically there's no top-level, elbow-bashing, lowside-undertaking, argey-bargey any more. And it's nonsense. Uci.... Hear this.. We the people.. Want 4x back. And hurry up. And no bullshit rules either.
  • 2 0
but... looking at nr of comments under 4X coverage vs XC coverage, nobody really cares about 4X... it's like with Marzocchi going down: writes passionate comments with #marzocchilives hashtag at the end, never owned one rides RS plans to buy Fox
  • 2 0
 I love marzocchi.

@WAKIdesigns that's basically what I was trying to say in the Marzocchi thread. Lots of nostalgia, but not a lot of people backing it up with their wallets/time.

  • 46 4
hard to say. I'd probably prefer the one that has the best coverage and most excitement. I think that basically puts DH at the top of my list. But given the option I would enjoy all three for sure.
  • 15 3
Same here. I am actually following all 3, but DH would be with top 'priority'.

enjoying watching crosscountry, lol ? Big Grin I mean it's cool but you can't be stoked to watch this
  • 24 2
all 3 should be an option
  • 9 1
Agreed I answered enduro but the coverage is hard, there isn't that much out there. I always watch the DH events. It's the nature of the sport that DH is easier to cover start to finish.
  • 19 4
it is about the riders too, it helps to know the history behind, their personalities, their weaknesses, etc...most pinkbikers don't follow XC racers very closely hence is the loosing choice on the clearly biased poll, but if we were to do a poll with a more balanced MTB community, XC would win easily. I honestly get very excited watching XC, not sure what put me closer to the edge of my seat, Nino and Absalon finish run in Albstadt or Chainless Gwin.
  • 6 1
Good perspective i bet your correct. Ive enjoyed whatever coverage I can find on enduro. They typically cover a bit more than the "rad" part of the coverage we receive on DH World Cup. But then again we get so much DH stuff on PB that it fills in the rest.
I wonder if PB would get more views if it diversified it's coverage. I get bored of the DH and slope style stuff after a while.
  • 9 2
I watch xc but mostly only the women because you know that either nino or absalon will win (or be on the podium) I think the womens field is slightly more unpredictable and I like watching girls ride I'm a simple man Wink
  • 7 3
If it's covered well it is very enjoyable to watch... Especially the Ladies' XC ❤
  • 14 1
if it has claudio in it, i'll watch it.
  • 3 0
Best coverage? The question says they all get equal coverage on that specific day
  • 1 0
Enduro needs a better format for coverage, the least worst coverage (not sure if that is gramatically correct) i've seen is the Slideshows on Vital, but it still lacks something, maybe it is that personalities in Enduro dont get that much recognition as they do in DH and XC or maybe the rules and the pointing system is not very well known by the hole community, for example Fabien Barel, i read that he was on the podium in all the stages of the last event, mostly second places, but he didnt get the overall first place of the event, that one kid got the first place (another example, i cant remember the name of the winning rider),That's pretty cool the underdog won, but why did he win? how many points did he score?, how was his time compared to fabiens? etc.... it would get me more excited if I fully understood the pointing/timing system, my mind would unconciosly predict what i want the result to be and i would be totally excited to see how far away the results are from my prediction, that brings a lot of excitment.
  • 28 1
So many people not reading the question...

'If all 3 were covered equally'

Then comments about 'i picked DH because the coverage is better'

Blank Stare
  • 2 1
That's the problem. I love claudio but the DH runs it's hard to see who is fast from the camera positioning... XC and enduro racing are super cool too but it's even more difficult to show the most important moments. A really well narrated XC/enduro race with clips of where the race was won would be AMAZING, and something i could identify with... but that seems impossible. So i watch DH races even though i don't DH.

Rally coverage is the same- to be there, on the course is an incredible, visceral experience... but i'm bored watching rally footage.
  • 19 2
DH provides the best viewing experience as Enduro is too spread out and XC doesn't have the same excitement factor. I've been watching a ton of the Tour de France and really only until the last few minutes is the race really exciting to watch. I find XC very similar and a bit boring unless Schurter and Absalon are racing right down to the wire. That being said I can appreciate the level of fitness and riding skill in all the disciplines and I'd be happy to sit and watch any of them if they're on Pinkbike. Beats watching tennis or baseball in the middle of summer Smile
  • 9 3

Look. . I have respect for the fitness of xc guys. . But seriously? You may as well watch Road riding. . Boring. Just people pedalling for a long time. . Would rather be riding my own bike. And yes, midday of my riding involves 30-50km of single trail. . With enduro style trails.

The only time Road riding gets exciting is when you add 200hp or so in events like the isle of man tt. Ive come from racing in the auzzie 600 supersport series.

Enduro is great to watch as a highlights real. . The race lasts for too long.

But in all seriousness. .. DH lends itself to the best coverage. Is the knarliest terrain, ballistically fast and the guys are real characters. . It's part and parcel of doing something so dangerous.

But you know what I enjoy watching the most? ? Megavalanche... 4x on steroids
  • 8 2
You guys seriously struggle to answer simple questions! There was the flow vs gnar, with simple 2 options, and it started a massive "Why not both?" rage. Now it's which one would you prefer. It might be missing an "not sure" option, but the answer is pretty simple - the one you usually enjoy the most. No need to go all "they're all cool why do I have to pick one?" - the question asks to pick one. It's not like the rest is gonna get cancelled!
  • 8 1
I ride mostly enduro, I enjoyand learn from all three specialties, but I have to say that the DH world cup is by far the most exciting to watch.
  • 4 0
DH is by far the most exciting (imho) but i don't like that they don't show the complete run. The rider is just out of the gate and at the next cut the rider is 2 min into the run. XC is more live friendly. The whole race is shown and all the changes in standings are visible. EWS is a very long and time consuming event and covers a lot of trails. How many cameras would be needed to show the most important runs and spots? Way too many. So a 20 min highlight clip would be ok.
  • 5 0
4X easier to film you can see whose won straight-away (unlike enduro), don't have to watch the same small section of track 80 times (as you do in DH) & no filming of people slowly climbing up a hill (XC)
  • 3 0
Currently I would say that DH is the best to watch simply because the coverage is the best and most exciting. I'd really like to see a bit more EWS coverage though if they could find a way to do it well. The Crankworx Rotorua live stream was actually pretty interesting to watch I found.
  • 10 4
DH is by far the most exciting and unpredictable. I mean like, when was the last time someone won an XC event with no chain?
  • 3 1
Can't believe you got propped down for that.. I thought it was brilliant! In relative terms it would probably be more like someone winning an xc race without a saddle, or something like that, but that wouldn't have been as funny. Spare a thought for the person who didn't get that. Sigh.
  • 3 0
 Chainless bikes are pointless.
  • 2 0
That's because bikes are suposed to have chains. Or else they are scooters. Gwins run was still a bike ride, because he started with a chain. It broke and he delt with it very well. But if gain didn't start the race with a chain I wouldn't give him so much respect
  • 2 0
World Cup DH has the same widespread appeal as downhill ski racing. Watching racer after racer tackling the same insane features slightly differently, and noticing how they approach the course, is appealing to many people. The drawback (not just with DH but most bike racing) is that you see the riders for a few seconds only.

World Cup cyclocross is fun to watch too, and you can see almost the whole course!
  • 2 0
If you are going there, then World Cup trials is probably the best watch. Full coverage is easy. The riding level is bonkers. The moves are impressive and entertaining, and there is good drama and some strategy. Try watching one. Gilles Coustellier at 2012 Aalter WC is a great watch.
  • 2 0
I agree with @twozerosix. World Cup cyclocross, particularly on the sand courses in Holland/Belgium, is absolutely nuts. They have more people on one individual dune, on a single 150m downhill, than you'll get for an entire WC DH season. They get 50,000 people around a 4km course. And all of them are drunk out of their minds.
  • 2 0
quite honestly, watching DH world cup on site is bloody boring in my books, the best thing you can do as an onlooker is be there during the week, when you can watch best riders and make sick moves all day long, you can even talk to them. They just keep on coming all the time, sometimes in trains, not every minute, often broken with some timing device problem or injury that can last a few minutes. Even at the pits people will have time for a chat. Race day is best spent on your own bike.
  • 3 1
Some times i think the pinkbikers is unable to read and to have the imaginationon what the question goes out on.. All of them has equal coverage, at the same time. Why even start commenting on what would be possible or not. I personally would have 3 screens wich shows one and each of them. Because mtb in any discipline gets me going to get out and ride. And in the poll i choose the EWS because it contains a bit of all. Enjoy ride a bike weather its is an old scrap bike around the block or a high performance bike in its natural place to be ridden.. Peace!
  • 6 5
On some courses flying drones and good editing could make for great enduro coverage, maybe even better than some dh if it is wide open. It might look like a bike video. Rally racing, as clipped as it tends to be, is way more interesting than other formats of car racing, and enduro is the same format almost.
  • 1 0
Overhead drones can solve some issues in terms of covering a greater area of the course, but distance and POV of an overhead means you lose most of the dynamics of the bike interacting with the terrain that you get at ground level. Too much detail and scope is lost.
  • 1 0
I love the prospect of small, intelligent beacon drones that fly with each rider, but you will never, ever, replace the value of a static camera in a sport involving speed.
  • 1 0
Plus you need a calculator at any time to work out who is winning! Dh is dimple, that's a major drawcard
  • 3 0
I'd love to watch more Enduro for sure but have a hard time seeing how they could cover enough of the events given the distances, timing and spread of the riders.
  • 5 1
4X for sure but as it's not on the list I guess DH. Enduro and XC work better as highlights videos IMO.
  • 2 1
As all the above says - dh is the most exciting to watch, its fairly straight forward to get cameras in good positions and its quick. The EWS recap videos are fantastic but it illustrates how difficult it would be to cover. All those stages over such a long distance would mean a lot of cameras/infrastructure required. As for XC, its probably the most physically demanding (maybe) however I feel it does get really exciting till the last few laps when you see the riders really giving everything they've got.
  • 2 0
Enduro could be good to watch but it's hard to cover that much ground with cameras. If it only had more money it could be very interesting to watch. Although what is there I better than nothing I guess
  • 1 0
 Definitely DH.
Equal coverage considered... DH is one single run riders prepare for several days... You can't beat that intensity. Enduro would be fun, seeing some riders kill a rowdy section but they won't attack with the same intensity knowing they have 20-30 mins + of racing multiple courses.
  • 2 1
I don't think any form of MTB event translates particularly well to live coverage, but here's what I reckon:

For each event:

XC: 1-2 minute highlights video and photos
EWS: 5-10 minute highlights video and photo epic
DH: live coverage but with much better camera work across the whole course. It's pretty lame ATM. Plus photo epic
  • 1 0
Do I really have to pick one? I'll take downhill because the format lends itself to spectating, enduro because it's what most of us do on the mountain--albeit more slowly, and XC because someday someone's heart will actually burst out of their chest. No matter what it is, I have a strong appreciation for what the human body can do. As I get older, I find myself doubly appreciative of the veterans of the sport that are able to stay competitive year-after-year. Above all, I'm inspired to try and improve as a rider, to take chuck my trusty Honzo down a race course, to hope that I can hang on, and to have one hell of a good time.
  • 1 0
In terms of my personal preference, Im an enduro guy for riding love the concept and format of it however dont find it as enjoyable to watch. For me I love to RIDE Enduro, but theirs nothing like watching a UCI DH event with Gwin winning it chainless....
  • 1 0
I feel like EWS has a chance to market their action like nascar. a few well placed cameras to show some action from the hillside, helmet cams etc. the competition is pretty awesome watching people overtake, pass, crash, take interesting lines, etc. It would also probably take a big investment on wireless cameras and GPS tracking and such, but the opportunity is there.
  • 1 0
Yep, and 100x people watch road racing and velodrome, that does not mean its exciting to watch. I watch xc racing on red bull TV and those guys are machines, awesome athletes. But the poll is what racing to choose if they are all on at the same time therefore DH, if the poll was choose all 3 if you wish then i would choose all three and add some bmx, 4x, slopestyle, and big mountain rampage but not road racing it sucks to watch. If DH was covered by mainstream TV it would be huge, prize money would be somewhere near these racers/freeriders risking serious injury. Its amazing what people watch on TV, Millions of people watch snooker and think is exiting, just get DH on TV covered with lots of cameras and the masses will love it.
  • 1 0
DH = F1 and what i'll watch and prefer watching. Seeing the speed what these guys and ladies put on the line for that one run just doesn't exist in any other aspect of cycling.
Enduro = Product sales and long racer careers but is not the pinnacle of speed and risk that downhill is.
XC = Roots of the endurance side of our sport. Suprisingly fun to watch.
  • 1 1
Downhill live is where it is at. The EWS live is something that really cant be done on a large scale due to the distance it covers. Getting lots of cameras around the stages to get lots of shots and gopros used for helmet cam footage of some of the top riders from race day and all put together into a World Rally Championship style program would be the best possible coverage that we could get, the videos they make already are good but you kinda get the idea that they are lacking in the amount of cameras they can get to the stages to record the racers, which is totally understandable but if they did manage to do a much longer video to near an hour it could be sold to TV stations willing to broadcast it providing extra income for the EWS scene.
  • 5 0
 Megavalanche
  • 3 3
I would rather watch the tennis, golf or the ashes. Dh is amazing but it's not the best spectacle for tv, sort of like why F1 is more interesting than WRC. They tried lots to get more WRC views but it is just not as interesting. Enduro is like a dulled down dh with some pedalling and xc is OK to watch but you just don't see enough of it. Question should have the tour de France in there too. O would think many dh boys watch it.
  • 1 0
Yeah I think for a lot of people, watching everyone go at once trumps watching people take their turn. In whatever sport or discipline or whatever. More people tune in for the hundred metres than the triple jump. It's exciting on a different level when it's not a hotseat but elbow to elbow instead, condensed into a shorter time space and has the potential for more carnage. Kinda true of the wrc instance, rally cross tried to spice it up I guess, but strangely 4x has become an exception by being dropped. Is it time we faced the reality of modern sporting prowess and expectation, and just make it 8x? But include plenty of rough shit so nobody cries 'bmx!'.
  • 1 0
As a 4X racer I couldn't agree more but, more riders. 6 or 8 would just be a mess, to ride and to watch. Also it would take out the elimination element of the sport. Think if 4X as more like dual but on an open track where 2 riders qualify to the next round an 2 go home
  • 1 0
Id rather watch WRC over F1 but BTCC over them all lol, But i prefer to be out in the shed building a bike or shredding over watching any TV
  • 5 0
 The answer is yes.
  • 2 0
If all three had equal coverage. I'd choose DH, but the coverage of the DH is very poor, always drops out and very little coverage of the track. XC has the best coverage.
  • 2 2
XC is just too painful(and boring to me) to watch, EWS is too long and there is all ways annoying and embarrassing crashes, but DH is short/long/dangerous enough to keep you on the toes. (as a pro rider and the sport lovers like us)
having Rob Warner on the mic pumping the DH vibe on all most every world cup, Claudio's Course Previews/commentary and sick riders makes it really worth watching/fallowing.
i don't get it why slope style, rampage and the fest are not an option?
after world cup DH definitely rampage and the fest boys are the most worth watching
  • 1 0
sorta of a loaded ??? as right now DH really only gets the decent coverage . even then how much of the actual course are you watching ?? maybe 60 to 90sec per rider and thats only really a handful of them ..
  • 1 0
Give me full live coverage of DH World Cup, including the practice and qualy, a mid week 20 or maybe 30 minutes sick-edit of EWS and i really don´t know how to make XC fun to watch (even i really like it).

Why no Unicycle downhill World Champs option? surely the most exciting to watch, and the most fun you can have on one wheel???

The question is too limiting: I'd want to watch bits of all of them, although I'd most likely gravitate (geddit?) to the DH.

DH would be the most entertaining. However I'd also watch Enduro just because that's more my style of riding.

A lot of folk posting how XC is somehow gay. Fact- most XC pros would smash you on a dh bike.
  • 2 0
That's a mighty big statement. I'd be interested to know how many XC pros have even ridden a DH bike. This is way off the subject anyway. The question is what would you prefer watch?

I never answer polls correctly because I think they are funny and who is the outcome for? What's the point?
  • 1 0
The point is market research. That's what all polls are about. What do people want to watch and what advertisers is it going to attract?
  • 1 0

Between Enduro and DH for me as they offer the most excitement with gnarly trails, different line choices - tight times and all at a mega fast pace to keep the adrenaline and stoke levels high! Watching people in Lycra with saddles up their arse at half the pace doesn't quite cut it for me, but whatever floats your boat I guess!

You realize that the XC races have attendance 4-5x the DH races, right? And that the Redbull coverage viewership reflects that, too?
