Yes bike works perfectly without the chainguide, running a SRAM type 2 clutch rear mech and narrow/wide chainring. Alongside an e*thirteen FreeChucker for rocks and roots. Also ran the same setup on my old FR bike and never dropped a chain once this way ;)
