The track here at Mammoth is dusty, dry, and you're rolling on marbles the entire time. Touch the brakes and you go flying. Gwinny qualified first, but we all know he doesn't have brakes on his bike anyway. Logan Binggeli was 2nd with Luca Shaw right on his heels. Mikey Sylvestri felt right at home here at Mammoth, taking down the 4th spot. Charlie Harrison took down the Jr Ex 1st spot with Bruce Klein and Andras Simon 3 seconds back. Warren Kniss slid in the 4th spot, and then went on to win Dual Slalom for the Juniors. Jill Kintner took down the 1st spot for women's qualifying, and also won slalom tonight.

Here is a course preview as ridden by Andras Simon of the Incycle JR team:

The track is a little different from previous years, with some rocks pulled and jumps added to make times faster. The speeds some racers carry is quite terrifying and with everyone turning up the speeds that tiny bit, there is plenty of carnage.

Stay tuned for a finals video!

People who say that this is not gnarly enough are funny.

It was won on a lefty 29er last year. Strobel is racing on a 29er trail bike.

It's pretty pedally, but the gnar parts are gnar

It was won on a jekyll last year not a 29er.
  • 2 3
Yeah, I wish it was less pedally. It definitely has the gnar but also has too much flat stuff.
  • 27 3
Since when does a 29-er invalidate the gnar? You guys are so predictable.
  • 3 0
Exactly. It would be understandable to say that it is too dumbed down if every rider raced a trail bike, but the fact is most riders are on dh bikes.

Everything doesn't look to hard until you're there in person.

That's not the 120mm Following that Strobel is riding, it's a rumored 160mm travel prototype 29er.

That was a solid run by Andras. Keep pinning it broseph!

 Compare that to this:

this might explain why the Brits produce so many great DH riders...and we have Gwin and...

Such little coverage of this event. Does the U.S. mountain bike scene need more or better promoters? Is it sponsorship or cost issues? Track development? Locations? Insurance or legislative hold ups? Seems like Europe bustles during the summer and the US just has a handful of big events.
  • 1 1
I think you've answered your own questions. Cycling is also a much bigger sport in Europe than it is here in the US. (But the scene has grown a lot here too.)

Aaron Qwinn's interview... "Ya the track is good, a little loose, but I already won I just need to ride down the mountain."

Why is it so hard to find qualifying results?
  • 3 0
Good to see some local talent at this event! Luke, feel the force....

They should be running Upper Velocity to Chainsmoke and building gigantic jumps at the bottom of Chainsmoke. That would be the ultimate nationals course.

 Is Cole P. riding a 29" DH?
  • 1 0
 Any idea what it is?

That first rock garden is odd...he carried soooo much speed!!1

Mammoth has such a cool vibe. Glad they are hosting even if I'm not sure this is the best line for the Nats.

Why doesn't Gwinn run his AG-1 grips?
