Video: Bikes for Kids - CONOR and WRC
I got my 9 yr old son a used Specialized Gromhit (full sus 24" wheels), perfect for gravity fun and not too heavy for a bit of pedaling. They are not made anymore so need to look in classifieds, but it is a legit bike.

2012 Fox Float Factory 36 FIT RLC Kashima
$715 USD2012 Fox 36 float with Kashima 160. Stanchions in perfect condition. Lower right sticker is scraped from pedal rub on bike rack (see pic), and couple scratches in left sticker. Normal cable rub. Tapered steerer. 8" crown. Just replaced seals (2012 SKF seals) and oil, feels great.
