Saracen's Myst has been winning downhill races under the guidance of professional team riders and grassroots racers alike, since its inception in 2010. The years that followed witnessed countless tweaks and updates, but for 2017, the team at Saracen have turned things up once again. After 18-months of exhaustive development, in which five different alloy mules were tested plus countless hours in the saddle, Saracen's latest gravity machine and the latest in a long line of proven DH race machines, is now available to mere mortals. While these new frames were first spotted at the 2015 DH World Championship in Andorra, the process of perfecting the chassis to exactly how the designers and the World Cup team wanted it, was one that couldn't be rushed. This meticulous approach has ultimately delivered another awesome race machine...

The 2299.99 GBP price tag will be attractive to anyone looking to upgrade to a carbon race chassis.

Toray UD High Modulus carbon frame:
Built from a mixture of Toray 24T/30T UD carbon with 3K reinforcement in strategic areas on the downtube, Saracen has saved 560g on the existing alloy front triangle. The engineers have also incorporated the ability to fine-tune the front centre by an additional 8mm forward and 5mm backwards thanks to a custom headtube and 'reach adjust' headsets. The brake hose routeing on the new rear triangle which is now internally routed in the seatstays.

UD Carbon Links:
The natural UD carbon links save 110g over the original CNC machined alloy linkages.

Shock cradle:
Relocating the shock cradle to the downtube lowered the centre-of-gravity while also improving stand-over. This was a hard task for the engineers as the frame needed to be as future proof as possible and be able to accommodate the next generation of air-shocks coming through with large volume air cans.

Integrated fork bump-stops:
Helping to clean up the front end of the bike and also house the cable ports for the rear brake hose and rear derailleur cable.

I love how saracen is a 'real' brand now. Years back they were only a small upgrade on cheap brands like apollo. But now they are a serious brand with serious goals. I love it! A massive upgrade from the 'saracen raw' I used to have when I was like 12 xD

In the late 80's/early 90's Saracen were "The Sh*T", then like a lot of other bike companies they just became "Sh*T..." in the late 90's and started putting out the kind of bikes you see for £59.99 in your local supermarket.economies of scale I guess.
For the last several years though they've been producing some quality bikes.
It's a bit like how I feel about Skoda cars, years ago a Skoda with a sunroof was called a skip lol, but now they're decent cars in the same league as VW, but I still think of them as skips, a bad image can be hard to shake.
With its current bikes though it looks like Saracen have definitely turned the corner.

I've liked Saracen for a few years now and own a Ariel and its one of the best bikes I've had and I've had a few boutique bikes, Nicoli, Foes and Santa Cruz to name a few. If you want something different buy a Saracen. Talking to my local dealer you'll soon be able to get a new linkage kit that sorts the old bushing issues on the older Ariels.

 I know right? Nut everywhere.

The head tube is 105mm on an XL, anyone who is actually tall is going to need a lot of stem spacers... oh joy. The rest of the geometry looks pretty spot on.

Brilliant reach adjust headset...wish more woukd offer this, especially on other non- dh bikes.
  • 1 0
Probably 5+ years ago I thought about an oval headtube that you can tailor the reach with different cups. Seem like such a natural thing to close the gap between sizes.

Wants, but cannot justify the extra ££ over the YT. Well it maybe the same price if the pound to euro gets any worse......

This is my Fave DH bike now
