You Don't Need to Learn on a Hardtail - Opinion
I certainly agree with knowing how to swing a straight tool. That's a necessary technique. I guess the ski's, like the bike, depend on what you're aiming toward. Having training skis as close to or exactly like your race pair is a good idea.

@jaydubmah: Well, at least the full face helmet. My daughter doesn't play hockey. How else is she going to get that Canadian smile?

You Don't Need to Learn on a Hardtail - Opinion
@atrokz: The point of what? I learned on a fully rigid Colnago steel messengering. The point of a fs from the get go is so that my wife and daughter will have fun and want to go out with me. They may never learn to bunny hop. As long as they end the day with a smile and no complaints, I'm happy. If they were really interested in learning, I'd throw them on a full dh rig and get them up to speed with miles of riding in the park.

You Don't Need to Learn on a Hardtail - Opinion
Um, the fastest racers in the world only sport 165 SLs compared to the old 205s. Using the best tools for the job that one can afford will save a ton of frustration. Why keep this conversation to suspension? Shouldn't beginners use a completely rigid bike with a steep HT angle? Let's keep it old school for purities sake. #facepalm
