Greg Minnaar is a man of many talents. Not only one of the best World Cup downhill racers in the world, he's also a very successful entrepreneur, and helps out with a women's jewelry company as well. We stopped by to take a look at the inner workings of his bike shop in Pietermaritzburg, South Africa.

bigquotesMy father bought the shop in 1992 or '93 I think. I was racing motocross at the time, but when they bought the bike shop I grew less interested and my results were going down - I wasn't getting in the practice time since I was always at the shop. Then I got into bicycles and really liked the way I could ride and practice by myself up in the forest. I actually did my first race up in Ferncliff, at the top where this year's World Cup is. A couple of years ago my dad was really ill, and since I've always said I wanted to take over the shop, I thought that was the right timing.

bigquotesIt's quite nice being up here in Pietermaritzburg - it's more social, guys are riding, they come in and shower and go to work, have a swim, coffee, beer, whatever.

As you would expect, Minnaar's shop is stocked with plenty of complete Santa Cruz bikes.

Minnaar's World Champs winning V10 has a spot of honor along with the rainbow striped jersey and gold medal on the wall.

'A place for everything and everything in its place.' The shop is well organized, and equipped to tackle any imaginable repair.

The Santa Cruz boys rounded up 4 shitbikes last year... With only one running a certain photographer happened to get dibs on it to rip around the track....

Wouldn t be a good bike shop with some good company hanging around. Peaty takes a taste of the coffee.

Mike - Greg talks about Sandy helping the shop. Can t remember the quote but this would be the photo for it.

bigquotesI'm away a lot and I have other businesses that I'm involved in as well, so I rely a lot on Shane Small to run the two stores. He oversees both, and then Craig Paul runs the top shop here. We only run three staff members up top, and then we've got five on the bottom. Shane bounces between the two checking stock levels and everything else.

Where's the armed security guards? Or does everyone in P-burg just know not to mess with the boss Minaar?

I was surprised to see that there were no bars on the windows, I obviously know very little about life in Pietermaritzburg or South Africa. Here in Albuquerque New Mexico you better have bars on your bike shop.
  • 3 0
I've been to the Cascades and it is a pretty wealthy white area with lots of security guards wandering around. Bars probably won't stop the robber, the security guards gun will!

Gregs shop is in a fenced off property with a locked gate at night... dont worry we still have crime here in pmb...

In SA our criminals are too stupid to know what to do with bikes like that... and if they try and sell it they get caught quickly... My stolen DH rig was put on a local online store and was advertised for a 1/10th of it's value... Cops picked the dumbass up straight away...Welcome to SA

theres something i don't trust about a clean shop.
  • 1 0
I kinda feel about the clean shop. I've spent countless hours cleaning the one I worked at. No matter how much or often filth always wins. However I doubt this one see any POS bikes.

I was wondering why there were no photos from Paris Gore in the track-walk article. This would explain it. Did you guys all rock-paper-scissors to see who got to shoot Greg's shop?
