Jun 28, 2023Tout Terrain bike trailer - Single wheel, 6" travel
$1000 CADKeep rolling the dirt with your kid in tow!
The Tout Terrain is a single wheel mountain biking trailer with 6" of travel. Take the long way home from day-care and keep both the big and small kid happy. Great for the green and mellow blue trails, double tracks, gravel riding and extended family XC missions.
You won't find many of these around these parts. The Tout Terrain is a German made trailer that sells in Europe for EUR 1,700 new ($2,500 CAD). It's high quality as you would expect from ze Germans.
It mounts to the seat post via a sleeve that you leave on your bike (two are included. One fits 31.6 mm post and the other is missing a shim but these can be purchased to fit 27.2, 30.9 and 31.6 posts), the trailer arm and a universal joint that pivots horizontally, vertically but not transversely (it stays vertically aligned with your bike - you bank over, it banks over).
The trailer pod has a five point harness and a super comfy and solid seat which you can stash a surprising amount of gear under. The pod can be covered with a rain or mesh cover which strap closed or roll up out of the way. There's also a separate sun shade that mounts to the pod frame and a detachable storage bag that also mounts on the front frame. Kick stand keep the rig upright when you loading and unloading and clips flush with the underside of the pod when on the go (this takes most of the impact when you inevitable bash some rocks - its a bit beaten up).
Suspension is via a air shock which you can change the location of mounting to the pivot arm to change the travel and clearance. Low for better centre of gravity, high for clearance.
It folds up a little bit so everything is within the main pod, but nothing fancy like a Thule.
I had the trailer towed by my 27.5" wheel mt bike. If you plan to tow with a 29" you'll want to check the clearance to your rear wheel. The towing arm does hit the wheel at some point as you ride over larger and longer bumps (ie you are riding down the far side of a bump while the trailer is still coming up the other side). This can probably be managed based on where you mount the sleeve on your seat post (higher better) but then that's kinda limited by dropper post.
It's been used fairly lightly by myself through two kids in town here and previously by a friend of mine who bought it in Europe. Got some wear marks but overall in very good condition.
Apparently you can barrel roll this thing:
