2014 Photo of the Year - Round 3 Voting Starts Now

Feb 18, 2015 at 17:22
by Pinkbike Staff
We gave you the top 32 images from 2014 and you've voted for what 8 images have made it on to round 3 for the 2014 Photo of the Year. Now it's your turn to narrow it down even further for who'll be vying for the $10,000 in CASH as well as $20,000 in prizing from our sponsors: Specialized Bikes and SRAM.

Check out the voting page

The 4th annual Pinkbike Photo of the Year Contest voting is underway. The winner will join John Wellburn, Toby Cowley and Sterling Lorence in the PB Photo of the Year Hall of Fame and they could walk away with $5,000 and a Specialized Enduro 27.5 kitted with a full SRAM groupo.

How Does it Work?

From thousands of nominated photos, 32 have been selected to pit against each other in a college basketball bracket-like showdown. At this point it is up to you, the users, to vote on the match ups. The photos with the most votes will move onto the next round. So 32 photos will narrow down to 16, then 8, 4, 2 until there is a single photo deemed the 2014 Specialized Photo of the Year Powered by SRAM.

Specialized 275 Enduro
Who from the top 32 will be taking this beauty home: a Specialized Enduro 27.5 with full SRAM build kit.

It s just ticked over 100 days of no rain in Perth so cornering at mach chicken turns out a bit like a Michael Bay movie. Shooting wide open at f 1.4 was a bit of a gamble but it paid off

Robb Thompson
To me this shot helps to show how in control top guys like Troy are with being almost out of control. They ride that super fine line between total disaster - and spetacular speed and success. I think the level of commitment and compensation with body position that is required to ride out sketchy situations at ridiculous speed is evident here.

I can't vote for any of these, because I feel I am doing wrong to all the other amazing photos
  • 8 1
haha my thoughts exactly. these photos are really amazing,
  • 23 2
I hate the way it's always my 2 favorites that are directly against each other for the vote... the whole bracket style contest isn't fair IMO...
  • 10 2
yeah I thought the same, voting should be based on individual pics not one versus another
  • 3 0
There can only be one highlander!
  • 19 3
Was a bit disappointed that many of the others didn't make it (not a knock against the photogs above...). I like Tim Koerber's of all the remaining photos, but wouldn't necessarily have picked it at the beginning.
  • 3 1
I agree. I always struggle to choose between them and feel like I shouldn't be voting because some of the photos I vote between id change my mind te next day. They are all so good.

My favourite from the beginning was the one of a guy jumping onto a rock garden in the wet dark woods that went out in the first round against the one in Yorkshire of the guy limbo ing the tree. I don't know why it was my favourite but I think it's because it captures what mountain biking is to me on a day to day basis - wet, slippery and dark Wink summer isn't long now though, when in the UK the rain gets warmer!

I thought that Micheal Overbeck shot was meh when he submitted it in 2013, and I thought it was more meh when he reprocessed it and submitted it again in 2014 (but cleverly hid the exif data).

Get your shit together Pinkbike. It's photo of the year and you should be picking 32 photos from THIS YEAR.
  • 2 1
 "THIS YEAR". umm, last year
  • 4 0
@ luka, lol I loved that one too, but voted for the Yorkshire pic, mainly due to patriotism, and it being Akrigg.
I still don't believe the Matt Hunter pic is possible lol
  • 3 0
Thanks @idhbaker I was pretty surprised to find out I in this competition, and I wasn't sure I had much of a shot past the first round, but I'm pretty stoked to be still in it! Thanks to all who have voted in my favour!
  • 2 0
It's a great photo @timkoerber - I rode whitehorse this summer as well, and loved it! Didn't quite make it up as high as where this picture was taken, but pretty close!
  • 4 0
Same here @todayisthegreatest. That @davetrump photo is one of my alltime favourites.
  • 1 0
Same here, thought Grave's shot was going to make it much further than this.
  • 1 1
Pretty much the entire last round of voting went against my votes. Apart from Sean Lee.
  • 2 0
Thanks @timkoerber you have a pretty rad one yourself. Hope to see it go a bit further.
  • 13 1
The Sean Lee shot is RIDICULOUS. It looks like a dynamic hyper-real pop-art cartoon. Front wheel off the ground, both feet on the pedals, emerging from that cloud of dust cranked over at 35deg. like some goddamn superhero*.

*Disclaimer: I'm a bit drunk.
  • 3 0
I reckon it's the best one there.
  • 2 0
Gets better the more you look at it.
  • 12 3
Sam Needham's photo with Chris Akrigg has it all. Great atmosphere, spot on composition, and so much creativity and skill I can't even believe it.
  • 12 0
Thanks buddy. Very kind words. Akrigg knows how to make a shot work Wink .
  • 10 2
I have no idea how Dave Trump's Chillean photo didn't win...
  • 1 3
Because a lot of pinkbiker hate Dave Trump... that's sad, because it was the best photo IMO. That being said, needham s photo was also great and deserve nearly as much POY
  • 4 0
 Hahahahaha do explain @zede

Is because I'm not affraid to call out some of the BS the haters like to spread in this site, and replace with actual facts ;-)

Can't please everyone
  • 1 0
 @davetrump
I was talking about guys like gladiax87, stillmrg etc. And about all the guys that want non pro POD like those from 2002 or 2003 (i.e. www.pinkbike.com/photo/40071).
You're the one who answer to people who say "I can't get POD only because Im not a pro / friend with mattwragg" or "i cant get POD because I don't have enough money to get an exepensive dslr / lense" or "this shouldn't be POD because not in focus/blablabla whining" so I assumed these kind of people don't like you
  • 2 0
Ah yes @zede the photographers with all the excuses and accusations. They don't like to hear facts and truth ;-)
  • 6 2
Vote @timkoerber . I've seen all the others in one form or another a thousand times over. Have never got to see the Yukon and it screams at me to visit it! That's what pics do...make you want to go there now. Smile
  • 3 0
I normally don't care for roost shots, but Sean Lee's photo's got one heck of a roost, so he got my vote. My favorite of the one's remaining is Tim Koerber's because it captures the type of riding I like doing and the light and colours are phenomenal,
  • 6 3
All of them are awesome but the Christop Laue one where the guy looks like he is just dropping off the cliff is a great shot.
  • 5 1
 Laurence CE's boosting photo... really?
  • 7 3
It's going to be impossible to choose between Cristoph Laue and Sean Lee.
  • 1 1
I'm not voting on that one. both are absolutely amazing
  • 3 1
Looking at the voting statistics and knowing last year's winner, Sean Lee is going to win. everyone loves an exploding dirt pic
  • 10 1
Haha sadly PB likes the brownpowdirtskidz more than anything. I had Bruno, Ale, and Sam as my favorites, but I guess they don't have enough roost to please the masses. @samneedham you have my vote here on out
  • 7 0
Thanks a bunch @davetrump . Who needs skids when you've got Chris Akrigg dragging a bar under a falling tree.
  • 3 1
Sam needam for me, the photo seems quintessentially British with a dingy wood and storm damaged trees. I will of course sounds stupid if the photo isn't in the UK.
  • 3 0
hey Trumpmore. Another year, another battle between steezed out, weird upper body position corner shots
  • 3 0
Thank's for every one who have supported me with their votes on the 1st and 2nd round !!!!!
  • 6 3
Sterling's photo is iconic now, I feel compelled to vote for it.
  • 9 1
Personally I'm bored of it already. Great shot, but I won't be voting for it this time round
  • 6 0
The initial excitement around the photo has faded -- it was posted last April, after all -- but think of all the excitement and discussion it generated when it was first released. People were stoked and had all kinds questions and comments. I think it created more of a buzz than any other photo this year and therefore deserves strong consideration for winning this contest.
  • 3 2
@TheR you're 100% correct in what you're saying, it was a real wow photo for me when I FIRST saw it, but come competition time, after a couple of weeks of this contest, it's the Troy Brosnan, Robb Thompson shot that has become my wallpaper. You know what they say, every picture and all that.... If it's my wallpaper my vote has been cast by my subconscious for the last couple of weeks, it says such a lot about downhill at the top level, fast, loose and full of drama
  • 2 1
I think it will come down to Laue or Lorence. We do like those big plumes of dirt around here, though. But I feel like those are kind of "Been there, done that."
  • 2 0
I can no longer be productive on my computer. I open the screen, see Laue's photo, and staring ensues...
  • 1 0
Anybody know what to do? i can't seem to vote... I have tried a lot to click on the link etc but then chrome says the page is unresponsive ...
  • 2 0
Pinkbike arms FTW! In all reality, I'm hoping @timkoerber grabs the award. DUH.
  • 5 2
 Roos or koerber
  • 15 1
Roos shot is from 2012. It was on a few mag covers and in Red Bull Illume a few years back. I'd say vote for the guy who submitted a photo from 2014, not from a guy who dug back through his image library a few years. It's photo of the year, not photo of the last 3 years submitted this year.
  • 3 0
and Andreassen's with Sam Reynolds on round 1 was a 2011.. Mike Zinger's is a BMX... I mean? Really?? and again.. Roos is a 2012.. Micheal Overbeck is a 2013... whatdafaq?
  • 2 0
sam needham vs sean lee should have been the final in my opinion
  • 2 0
my guess is laue vs needham in the final.
  • 2 1
this is going to be tough. I voted for all of those last round.
  • 3 2
WOW these pics are a step above last year that's for sure!
  • 2 1
Im saying Robb Thompson or Sean Lee for the win...
  • 3 2
Just give it to sterling now
  • 3 1
While it is a great photo, Personally I think the reason it is still in competition is due to the skill of the rider, not necessarily that of the photographer.
  • 1 0
Last picture !!!! Gotta love to play with gravity !!!
  • 1 0
holy shit these are getting crazy better every year
  • 1 0
Got to say I'm almost disappointed in alot of the pics that didnt make it.
  • 2 1
It's going to be laue v lorence for sure. Laue deserves the win.
  • 1 0
oh dammit, I forgot to vote last round
  • 6 6
Matt Hunter broke the internet, not Kim.
  • 1 1
Paris Gore is my favourite one
  • 4 1
It's a nice picture for sure, but every time I look at it I can't help but cringe a bit, it's so over the top it reminds me cheesy postcards.
  • 3 5
What is going to do Matt hunter with that spe enduro if he wins -- he should give it to me
  • 1 0
Have you at least voted for him?
  • 1 1
 Yes for sure !
  • 3 6
If sean lee will not get poy i will select myself for president and thats the last you want
