Photo of the Year 2016 Powered by SRAM

The 6th annual Pinkbike Photo of the Year Contest voting is underway. The winner will join John Wellburn, Toby Cowley, Sterling Lorence, Christoph Laue and Sean Lee in the PB Photo of the Year Hall of Fame and they could walk away with $5,000.

How Does it Work?

From thousands of nominated photos, 32 have been selected to pit against each other in a college basketball bracket-like showdown. At this point, it is up to you, the users, to vote on the match-ups. The photos with the most votes will move on to the next round. So 32 photos will narrow down to 16, then 8, 4, 2 until there is a single photo deemed the 2016 Photo of the Year Powered by SRAM.

On saturday march 19th Matt Macduff sustained a terrible fall attempting to make his way around the Loop Of Doom. After over 3 year of research determination and hard work Matt managed to find everything he needed to make his project happen. Built in a month at the Garden Route Trail Park in South Africa the gigantic structure rises up to 40 ft. in the sky. The crash left him with 10 fractures in his right wrist and 3 fractures in his right ankle. The story behind his stunt is as impactful as the structure itself. A real story of determination.

Hooked up with Mr Div Devlin to scope locations and grab a few test snaps. Not only did it turn out to be the greyest day ever but it started to piss down the moment we set up the first shot. Div sent it regardless couple of flawless runs were followed by a brutal face-plant bleeding from the nose and mouth Div insisted we capture some lifestyle shit before the light faded. m We ve got some exciting projects in the pipeline

Natural fires are a huge influence on the Okanagan region of British Columbia. Inspired by a particularly bad wildfire season Harrison Mendel and I had been on the hunt to create a unique burn photo but we were after something real rather than a staged fire photo. Several clearcut burn piles left to smoulder high above Kelowna gave us a perfect opportunity. Hidden pockets of soldering embers and toxic smoke made this a hazardous location but when Harrison slashed into a pile of ash and this wave of molten embers erupted we knew it was well worth the risk despite a deep burn on Harrison s ankle. Huge thanks to Ben Schleith and Harrison for helping to make this photo happen.

About the photo The picture is called Icarus 2.0. Our inspiration for this shot was the Greek myth of Icarus. The symbol of the first flying man beating the laws of nature and gravity. According to the myth Icarus got wings form his father Daedalus to escape a maze on the island where they were imprisoned. The wings were made of wax so Daedalus told his son not too fly too close to the sun because the heat would melt the wings. He also told him to keep some distance from the sea because the water would make his wings too heavy. Their plan seemed to work out They managed to escape the maze and the island. On the way to freedom Icarus became a little bit too reckless. He flew too high and got too close to the sun - his wings melted and he fell into the sea. Our athlete Max Mey is flying - just like Icarus - over the water and very close to the sun. The difference between the two flying men is that Max lands safely. His skills and his experience let him know what risks he can take and when he should stop. And of course his bike is not made out of wax which is the advantage of the times we re living in today.

I d been past this spot many times and thought about shooting there sometime but on this particular morning it was as if West Marin knew I was coming and put on a special effects show.

KC Deane and Geoff Gulevich in rsm rk Iceland underneath a spectactular Northern Lights show. The town of Reykjavik even demanded all lights be shut off in the city during this night due to the intensity of the showing here. Our crew went to Iceland with a vision to riding under the Northern Lights and we continually got shut down by weather. We photographed this the last night we were there on a 10 day trip and only saw the lights for two nights at the end of our trip departing our journey beneath a river of green in the skies.

Pinkbike, you did it again with those rolling photos! Why can't you make them smaller so they fit the screen?
On a seperate note, the selection of photos for this year's contest is on another level compared to past years. It will be a hard choice!
  • 3 0
Had the same thought. Then I realized I could click on the photo if I wanted to see the whole thing. But yah, had the same thought.

They fit my screen great. Although I'm not on a tablet or phone, since I'm old.

@oldmanjoe: Same here I am on a 27' and its perfect.

Amazing pictures too. Impossible to choose.

Such fantastic content. But, where's this beauty by JB Liautard and Thirion? www.pinkbike.com/photo/14166624
  • 3 0
@NRogers27: I was looking for that one.
  • 4 0
Hard to chose! In a perfect world, we would be judging rad riding VS rad riding and great pictures (on a artistic point of view) VS great pictures. It is hard to compare the loop of doom and a perfect scenery!
  • 1 0
@cbj2012: On a 15” they sit just outside the margins.
  • 1 0
 @NRogers27: Definitely a worthy inclusion.

So many great photos will go out in round one - but some just 'spoke' to me

It's too difficult to vote... so many excellent photos. This will take me a day or two to choose.
  • 19 2
Choosing a fave would be like going to a party at the Playboy mansion and having to choose one woman to be with the rest of your like. ALL THE BUNNIES!!!
  • 16 1
My favorite is the one with the bike.
  • 5 0
There is one that doesn't actually have a bike in it!

 Pinkbike?
  • 15 2
Thanks for picking some super creative shots this year. I am glad the number of roost shots has been kept to a minimum.
  • 3 1
yeah I agree, but that one with Nicola Pescetto is just sick
  • 2 3
Kind of ironic that in many places people are concerned about trail access being shut down for environmental reasons (real or perceived), then they rip the trails up by roosting all over the place.
  • 7 0
i think JB Liautard's has to be my favourite, the framing on it is some of the best if not the best i've seen in a mtb photo and the colours are just perfect too. but the rest are incredibly good too was such a hard choice this year!
  • 10 1
Dude from California draw a tough card with the loop of death....

Really surprised to not see the commencal meta v4.2 remi photo. I thought for sure that one would at least make it this far. Super excited to see two of my other nominations made it through.
  • 7 3
By no means am I saying that the others lost in 2016 in the biking world do not deserve any mention, and I get this is a contest, all of these photographers are amazing and the shots are fantastic, but Stevie crossing the line in a wheelie in Cairns is my vote for the photo of the year.

So many bangers! I'm really drawn to the @harookz and @davetrumpore photos; shutter drag and perspective versus drama and amazing use of negative space. All great shots!
  • 3 0
Harookz photo messed with my mind, it almost felt like the photo was moving.
  • 6 0
woah! stoked to be a contender among some big names!
  • 6 0
Thank you @pinkbike. It’s a honour to be a contender.
  • 5 0
 So many people upside down.
  • 3 0
Nice shots and all, but JB Liautard (6th from the top) might as well come and get his money for the winning shot. Magnificent.
  • 2 0
There is an essence of freeride in most of the photos and sunny mist silhouettes in basically all the others. Great set of photos and it's very hard to choose between many of them.
  • 2 0
In previous years there's always been one or two that have clearly stood out from the others for me. This year it's much more difficult to choose. Although the illume ones don't really do it for me.
  • 3 1
So last year's winning photo was the sun shining out of some guy's butt? Good to know that we humans make great decisions when we decide as a group. Reminds me of another vote we had in 2016.
  • 2 0
Robin Oneill and Harookz my favorite. One captures such great color contrast and the epicness of the landscape so well, the other captures the feeling of bombing a trail so well.
  • 5 0
Where's the giraffe chasing the guy riding?
  • 1 0
 yes !
  • 1 0
I vote for Martin Z. ANYTIME you can get an action photo of mountain biking in Norfolk, you deserve a medal!! Lots of great riding in the woods (Bacton-sshhh!) but not many actual mountains. Besides, its a lovely photo with the colours balancing nicely and the rider just suspended with no sign of a jump or trail or....anything.

  • 3 1
Hey, thanks Pinkbike for the awesome and free content you always deliver on
  • 3 0
Steve Shannon's number 1 for me.. really stood out from the rest
  • 1 0
So boys, was switching Duncan Philpotts shot in the voting section to being in Abby, shot by Mr Maine just a sneaky way to try to create a severance package?
  • 3 0
The effort behind some of these shots... unreal. great mix of photos
  • 3 0
Robins watermark is so big, it disrupts the shot!
  • 2 0
Some tough calls here. I think we’re spoiled by amazing photos year-round.
  • 4 4
This is the first time I am actually disappointed about Pinkbike's POY contest, only 2-3 pics that weren't mehSmile Way tooooo much nature and too little bicycling action.
But thats my own personal tragedySmile
  • 3 0
 Steve shannon all the way
  • 3 1
Not gonna lie, I think the photos of riders doing backflips but you can't see the jump or the landing just look awkward.
  • 3 2
 You meant awesome right?
  • 4 1
The flip in the field was done in dodgey tractor tire tracks on a 1ft tall plastic ramp.. looks way better without it =)
  • 2 1
Top 3: Bamboo land, Taxi, Dirt plow.

Honorable mention: Orange leaves

All the photos are amazing though!!!!

oh you f*cks.... hahah
  • 2 0
It is time for a hard copy Pinkbike Photo annual.
  • 6 6
I'm surprised a picture can win when the rider isn't wearing a helmet? (photo 2)
  • 6 5
IMO there is nothing in that photo that deserves it a place in the finals.

Some dude riding in (on) traffic with no helmet, skuffing up a working mans bonnet.
  • 16 1
@darkmuncan: Because it's completely original and far more creative than a lot of other shots (not meaning any in this selection of photos, just generally). Also, a difficult shot to take..timing, lighting, composition..all have to be spot on otherwise it would just look rubbish. It's worth noting that this shot was planned and set up, so I'm pretty sure the driver knew about it.
The only downside to the shot is as mentioned, the no helmet.
  • 7 2
@TombPhoto: This is the beauty of art/photography, what one man see's as creative and original, another sees as neither.
  • 8 1
I think it suits the shot, pure urban anarchy
  • 1 0
 MindblowedAF! Incredible stuff!!
