by Pinkbike Staff

Intense announced that it intends to release a limited number of copies of the Shaun Palmer replica M16 DH bike that it had on display at the Sea Otter Classic last April. The Palmer Limited Edition has an aluminum chassis, constructed at the factory in Temecula, California, and painted in the stars and bars by a local artist. The bike's component pick pays homage to the sponsors of Palmer's development team, and duplicates the parts found on the team's bikes. Only 60 Palmer Replica M16s will be made, at a starting price of $9000 USD.

Shaun Palmer s Intense M16 2015
Two originals: Shaun Palmer and his signature M16.

Shaun Palmer s Intense M16 2015
Shaun Palmer s Intense M16 2015
Intense builds its standard M16 with RockShox suspension, but Palmer's development team is sponsored by Fox, so the Limited Edition sports a Fox DHX2 shock and Factory 40 Float fork. The black fork sliders and DT Swiss wheels blend well with the paint scheme. A machine this flashy isn't for everyone, but that's the point. Apparently, Shaun Palmer never had problems being the center of attention - and his replica M16 is certain to do the same for 60 lucky DH riders who happen to have $9000 burning holes in their pockets for a new Intense.

 Freedom!
  • 16 7
 That's cute...
  • 51 14
Agree. Actions speak louder than words. As an American, I feel we should be focusing on putting more Americans on the top podium spots instead of painting the bikes with American flags.
  • 37 4
I spent my life riding Canadian bikes, we know what works down here.
  • 89 7
C'mon guys this isn't just another Murica bike. This is a tribute to the Palmer signature M1, the original Murica bike.
  • 40 1
To be fair this one is probably more American than most - produced and painted in the US... Not sure how many of the other American themed bikes can say that...

"Intense announced that it intends to a limited number of copies of the Shaun Palmer replica M16 DH bike that it had on display at the Sea Otter Classic last April."

Typo? "Intense announced that it intends to....." what? (sell?)

 set fire to?

@ncipperly you mean like the development team for US racers that Palmer is heading? There need to for sure be more of them but at least he and Intense are working to do it.

Only obsessed fanboys of Palmer will buy this shit! Bless you America!

Get a V10cc and paint it yourself. You get lighter better and only one.

Helps fund the best youth-dh program in the usa.
  • 6 3
I'd be proud to ride that, but at 9K+, if i was buying i think i'd want it painted in the Union Flag
  • 3 3
@chyu - pretty sure a decent graphic wrap artist could do this for a bunch less than $9K ...

The ugly ass bike comes with a classic Napalm tattoo that says....... if you a Canuk forget about it.
  • 12 9
Perfect. This frame needs to self-immolate halfway through a run, then sit on the sidelines spouting about its former greatness for the rest of its hideous life. That would make it the Palmer special edition.
  • 6 0
An Eagle comes with every purchase.
  • 4 1
 I'm going to buy one...when they're carbon.
  • 5 5
They are made in the usa. That's the point. I guarenteed the people who buy these are late 30 to 40 year old men with complete plastic armor kits on or 16 year old LA rich kids who don't know squat about biking. Does that take away from the cool factor of the bike....maybe a little. But cmon.....it's made in the USA....and it's hand painted!?¿! It not like every Rocky Mountain bike I've ever wanted didn't have a huge maple leaf on it.
  • 6 1
We don't need to worry about putting Americans on podiums. We have gwin.
  • 1 0
 Very soon hopefully!
  • 102 10
Snore. If you pay 10k for an alloy bike then you're smart enough to call yourself a true Palmer fan.
  • 7 1
It's a made in the US frame though. Not a Chinese made on. Bikes made in Western countries (US, Western Europe, etc.) at a low volume are more expensive. Although, $9k is a bit steep even though it is spec'ed with a nice parts kit.

  • 29 3
WTF??? "Stars and bars"??? No, it's "Stars and Stripes"!
  • 22 8
I was thinking the same! The 'stars and bars' was the pro-slavery confederate flag, right?
  • 42 44
It's not a "pro slavery" flag, that is liberal propaganda. It's just a battle flag that has gotten a bad rap
  • 10 6
@Ruffletron that's a bit of a misconception. "Stars and Bars" refers to the official flag of the Confederacy, not the typically seen battle flag of the Confederacy that everyone (rightfully) gets upset about.
  • 9 7
it was originally about slavery, but was more recently repurposed by the KKK as a symbol of Southern opposition to desegregation
  • 7 20
flag PacificPointer (Aug 13, 2015 at 7:29) (Below Threshold)
doubleEwe, you are wrong. The Confederate battle flag was never used by the Klan for that purpose. People need to rethink and relearn their history.
  • 23 1
No @PacificPointer , you need to learn history. First of all the " Stars & Bars" is neither the US flag, nor the modern "confederate flag:" it's the original flag of the confederacy, which resembles the original US flag: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flags_of_the_Confederate_States_of_America

Second, the modern usage of the "Confederate flag" was popularized by the Dixiecrat movement starting in 1948, during their attempts to get a Presidential candidate into the White house: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dixiecrat

I'll let their party platform speak for itself: "We stand for the segregation of the races and the racial integrity of each race; the constitutional right to choose one's associates; to accept private employment without governmental interference, and to earn one's living in any lawful way. We oppose the elimination of segregation, the repeal of miscegenation statutes, the control of private employment by Federal bureaucrats called for by the misnamed civil rights program. We favor home-rule, local self-government and a minimum interference with individual rights."

Third, the modern usage of the flag on governmental buildings was in protest to anti-segregation laws: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Modern_display_of_the_Confederate_flag#Display_at_South_Carolina.27s_state_capitol

It was added to the to Georgia flag in 1956, 2 years after Brown vs The Board of Education. The govenor who passed the resolution to do so all but admitted that it was a protest of anti-segregation. It was raised over the South Carolina capital in 1961, right as the Civil Rights movement was beginning to be taken seriously.

In short, it was never the official flag of the confederacy, & almost all modern usage is tied to anti-civil rights groups. It shouldn't banned, because free speech is enshrined in the constitution, but it shouldn't be flown in any official capacity by the US or a state government, because it's history is modern, and hostile to Black Americans.
  • 9 3
Not one to get into these kind of debates, but have you ever seen an African American in the south repping that flag? or anywhere for that matter? When a large well known group of racists in the south used the flag for their organization it sorta lost it's original meaning.
  • 11 4
Even if you remove the racial component of the Confederate battle flag, it still represents a treasonous and traitorous segment of the population that waged war against other Americans. Why any modern American citizen would want to wave a blatantly treasonous symbol and call it "heritage" is confused about their patriotism and allegiance to the USA.
  • 11 9
Excuse me. That flag is all about racism, slavery, ignorance and brutality. Effing heathens.
  • 9 2
Tell that to the Dukes of hazzard!

  • 11 1
Nice to see the brakes making as much of a visual statement as the old magura rim brakes did. I'm glad they're still stopping folk.. Back in the day NOTHING came close. The good old days of owning maguras and ceramic mavic rims when all your mates are on regular old calipers and regular rims. Yeah yeah.. Go back to sleep granddad lol.
  • 1 0
You're so right. Ceramic 521's on Hope Biguns with the Magura rim brakes was a dream set up of mine. When I was 14 and couldn't afford it... good times!
  • 1 0
Sounds about right. Living in England, being able to actually have working brakes in the wet and mud was a revelation. The way they cut through the mess was grin inducing.
  • 1 0
Aye. They were a big hit among the street and trials guys I used to know too.
  • 9 1
The bike in the picture with Palmer has different brakes, a different wheelset, a different shock, different handlebar, stem, seatpost...

So for 10k you get a replica that's not very close to what he's actually riding? Yeah, I know, he might be on the new shock by now, etc., but at this price point they could at least have taken a picture with the bike in it they're trying to sell, imho.
  • 3 0
They at least should have used the neon yellow brakes
  • 2 0
Is he actually riding much, I wonder?
  • 1 0
 He raced the Fontana series.
  • 4 1
Well, to be fair, for it to be a replica of what he's actually riding, they'd have to sprinkle geritol and meth over it.
  • 1 0
Those neon colored brakes were a limited production run and probably already sold out.
  • 7 1
The paint job will account for a fair chunk of that 10k. Look how detailed it is. It is actually quite understated for what it is I thought.
  • 14 5
 10 years too late
  • 12 7
Oh look an article about an expensive(but cool) bike. Oh look people whinging about the price. If you cant justify the price don't buy it. If I was in the market for a new Dh bike I'd consider one.
  • 3 1
" but I'm only 14 and have two paper rounds and still broke waaah too expensive"
  • 3 0
Eyyy, at least you have internet. My bro in Nigeria can only dream.
  • 8 3
Intense are trying too hard to run the Palmer show, a little less pathos would do. He's been a great rider many years ago but after long years of abusing himself, he's no longer that.
  • 3 0
I don't know about the "abuse" part, but there have been a lot of pictures of him recently, some of them featuring mountain bikes, like the one above, unfortunately in none of those pictures he looked like he was actually riding...

Still, I really like what Intense is doing, I think he can still be an inspiration to a lot of people.
  • 2 1
They are playing the Nostalgia card. Not sure if thats going to sell 60 bikes at 9 grand though.
  • 2 0
They did have a few vids of him riding, though, no? (I'm at work, can't go hunting for MTB videos)
  • 3 2
I think if you drink heavily...then you are abusing yourself.
  • 2 0
I'd call that a damn good time, unless you genuinely are an alcoholic mess...
  • 2 0
Well, Shaun's youth development team is kick ass, ask anyone who has seen them in action.
  • 2 0
 @gnarbar

I'm talking about alcohol abuse and alcoholism. Problem with casual use is that sometimes it leads to more...sometimes more can lead to more...one day yer having a drink with your mates after a ride on the weekend...then it's three times a week just kicking back...then everyday...then more everyday...before u know it it's 2 bottles of wine. Booze is the gateway drug...

  • 6 0
 2015, 9999$, 37.8 pounds........ah I will think about it Wink
  • 7 1
They should of given one to Missy!!!
  • 2 1
$10,000 doesn't seem like a big price tag for an american made piece of mtn biking history. 1 of 60 is rare. People pay 5-6k and up for catalog bikes and plastic rigs that have a very limited lifespan and will be worth nothing in a few years.
  • 1 0
I've said it before and I'll say it again, should've been a full on tribute bike, the brakes are a nice touch, still have some of the old Gustavs myself, but it looks tacky,I spoke to tld and they said they wanted to do full retro but Intense declined.

I´ve seen that before, I think:

^^^My thoughts exactly!^^^ like really?? come on people, if this crap continues on the path its been on we will be looking at 20K mountain bikes before we even get to the year 2020. This is out of control. We have to take a stand as consumers at some point right?? come on, NO MORE!! That ALUMINUM Intense would have been 3K ten years ago. Inflation rates are what, 2-3% a year?? So why does the mountain bike industry get to add a f*cking 0 those percentages?? The only reason is because people are stupid enough to pay it!!!!!! Stop this madness..

Get out and ride more if you want be a better mountain biker, spending more money on a bike will not make you a better Mountain Biker. Use that money to take days off and ride!!! 10K aluminum mountain bikes now?? The damn 1% must be getting into mtn biking now huh?? Cause I dont care if 20 naked strippers built the thing in the middle of time square and Leonardo Davinci's ghost came down and painted it.. TEN THOUSAND DOLLARS??? Hell NOI!! no no no NO NO!

There is not a motor on this bike.. I repeat. There is NO motor on this bike..

  • 2 1
If environmental impact is your main concern, aluminium has no advantage over carbon at all.
  • 1 0
Everything I've seen contradicts that statement, since you can recycle aluminum, carbon, not so much.
  • 1 0
... environmental impact has everything we do of course aluminium is toxic to water and thought of being a cause of alzheimers disease. Furthermore it takes high energies to prepare aluminium (as well as cf.) but in contradiction al can be reused, even though expensive and energy intensive, which is up to now not possible with cf., at least not without delivering weaker structures resulting in loosing the advantages of cf. structures. Up to now most of the cf stuff just gets dumped and right now, not just in the bicycle industry. IMO one should stay with al for the sake of not opening another can for pollution, theres enough already.

but maybe they'll come up with something, research is in progress
  • 4 2
Shuan? I've heard of Shaun Palmer.
  • 9 10
Bloody hell a bike that's made out of actual metal....is everyone feeling ok??? Oh wait...obviously not as the price is $9000! What an absolute rip off!! There is no justifying it!
  • 1 2
 just like I said.....
  • 6 1
Custom paint jobs easily run in the vicinity of $2,000-$3,000 (or more), so it takes a normally priced $6,000 bike up to $9,000. That it's expensive is very true. That it's a rip off is most likely very inaccurate.
  • 1 0
That depends on whether having your bike look like the American flag is worth $2-$3k to you.

Throwing in that you have ''4 intense bike" makes you a douche bag, not this company's 20 year relationship with one of the sports most important figures.
  • 5 2
Palmer never asked anyone for their approval or forgiveness for his attitude. I do not look up to him as a respectable individual, but his athletic ability deserves recognition. As well as the influence and impression he left on the sport we all enjoy. Cannot deny either of those things. Love him or hate him, he is and always will be Palmer. Says so right across his gut! Haha
