FOX Unveils a New 36 RC2

Apr 7, 2014 at 12:33
by Pinkbike Staff
FOX is celebrating its 40th anniversary since Bob Fox started redefining ride dynamics in the motocross world in 1974. Our entire fork lineup has received attention, with significant updates being made to the 32 and 34 models, and a completely redesigned 36 series - some of the most exciting product offerings we’ve ever introduced. FOX will also be offering special edition stealth black forks and heritage graphic kits that will fit any FOX fork or shock.

FOX

40 Years of FOX Philosophy: Developed in Extreme Environments with Demanding Athletes

In 1974, Bob set out on a quest to build a better motocross suspension. His approach was to work with top athletes at the racetrack to help them improve. Our current-day Racing Applications Development (RAD) program continues to work with athletes at the top of their game on some of the most demanding terrain around the world. Several key developments from the RAD program have been used in the 2015 product line. New compression tunes, redesigned damper seals, and lubrication oil all add up to performance improvements.

• 32 and 34 forks have updated damping tunes for better small bump compliance and traction
• 32 and 34 Factory models offer on-the-fly CTD damping adjustment and 7-click Trail mode fine tuning
• 32, 34, and 36 forks feature a redesigned seal head architecture that virtually eliminates breakaway force
• 32, 34, 36, and 40 use an advanced lubrication oil that integrates Molybdenum from the Kashima Coat formula

FOX

Our Lightest 36 RC2 Fork Ever - Redesigned for 26", 27.5", and 29" Wheel Sizes

The model year 2015 36 fork offers rigidity and improved traction for all-mountain riding and enduro racing in a new lighter chassis. Also of note is its updated geometry, a new convertible thru-axle design that works both with 15mm and 20mm, a purpose-built RC2 damper, and a redesigned air spring system that equalizes rider weight for increased traction.

• Lighter: a half-pound weight savings over its predecessor (starting at 4.19lbs/1901g)
• 36-specific RC2 damper: a redesigned valve system provides better small bump compliance, reduced friction, better traction, and wider tuning range
• Redesigned air spring system: equalizes rider weight for increased traction
• Convertible thru-axle design: works with both 15mm and 20mm thru-axles

My God... 26", 1900g, RC2 damper for 160mm and 20mm axle top top it all! I mean... I actualy want to have it! Haven't said that about a FOX product since 2011! That looks fantastic, I take that black one over PIKE!

Dear Fox Racin Shox - I hereby forgive you the 15mm axle mess you created. I am at peace and I shall never mention that again... En i Nomine Spiritus Sanktuuuum...

 I like the retro graphics!
  • 15 1
The retro graphics are awesome !!!!!!
  • 15 0
I want a fork with those graphics........I'm feeling so shallow lol
  • 2 1
I looked on there sight and there not for sale yet . Or even up
  • 3 1
will they sell the decals? they'd be perfect with my orange frame and the endur-o-matic helmet I want!
  • 10 2
Got the chance to see the prototypes in action in Sedona this past February. They're absolutely amazing. Not one was very happy about giving them back to Ariel and going back to their Pikes. Fox is back in full force.

Nothing against you here but it really grinds my gears when people reply to the top comment to be seen...

 -snip-
  • 4 0
I really like those blacked out decals... Too bad I have the white 36's. Still the best forks I've ridden so far.
  • 2 0
 Super stealthy
  • 3 5
Too bad they aren't doing it for the 36 Frown
  • 2 0
Slik graphics will probably make them
  • 1 0
Yeah but I also have the white forks Frown why didn't I get custom Floats.
  • 2 1
 Those graphics are so sick
  • 1 1
Could go to a vinyl decal place or make some of your own with print decal paper for pretty cheap, when it wears out replace it for .10 cents
  • 1 0
Got a set from these guys here(bit pricey though, but good quality). I'm pretty sure in time they'll do something similar.
Edit:Johnny already said it, but here's a link.

Repackage fork, only new decals and a 20mm axel, not even a quick release.
  • 4 0
It's lighter than the previous 36, it's inviously meant to compete with the PIKE
  • 2 0
I wonder what the travel options are on the new 36. As good as it is, I think the pike is more a direct comptetion for the 34, in between a noodlely long travel revelation and the burly lyrik. Just what you need on most aggressive AM bikes. Hope RS respond with a new charger damped Lyrik
  • 2 1
36 is the fork of dreams.
  • 1 0
 Pretty sure travel is 160.
  • 3 2
Wouldn't you think that they will renew the Fox 40 for their 40th anniversary??? like, da!
and besides, why go back to a tool-must configuration on the axle? it's 2009 all over again...
  • 14 3
The "new" axle makes for a lighter fork. It's only one Allen key. If you don't ride with one then you're an idiot anyway.
  • 4 1
Ryan Wensley - chill out, no need to call anyone idiot in that instance Wink QR thru axles are an example of a design that tries to save people from themselves. With almost every design, the idea comes from genuenly from the designer(s), as the majority of customers are unable to imagine things like that. Then most of those who can will not take time to call the designer to tell him that this and that would work, then it is hard to imagine that he could get several calls like that and make market research if there is a true demand. Usualy people having an idea and willing to give it form make it themselves and start a company Smile Target group research is an illusion from a customer point of view. It's role is to fine tune the product and prepare the strategy for the marketing campaign. Thus most of the demand is created, thus certain designs turn people into idiots (smartphone khe khe).

To me the most important bit about those bolts is that it clamps the axle properly. I'd argue that such clamping coped with 15mm axle makes better effect than Maxle Lite with 20mm. At the same time I must honestly admit that I'd prefer the previous tool-free system on 36, which was heavier but still provided firm clamp holding the axle in a rigid manner. Not all tool free system are not made equal. Now that I think about it I might want to buy an older 36 Float RC2 from 2011 and wait 3 years until someone sells that one second hand Big Grin

Anyways, again: bravo Fox, I bow to you!!!
  • 1 0
I actually like my old 66's axle and the tool free removal
  • 1 0
Yeah I like my 20QR on my 36's but it's hardly a much longer task to whip out an Allen key.
  • 1 0
I don't have any problems with 4 bolts either, especially that I do not take off the front wheel more often than 3-4 times a year.
  • 1 0
 180mm please!
  • 1 0
 36 comes in a 170mm option...
  • 68 13
Better than the inverted xc fork...
  • 12 11
i find it hilarious that so many people liked this comment. mind as well turn the fanboy knob from 7 up to 11 and say BUT NOT AS GOOD AS THE DVO EMERALD!!!! I can assure you, if you were in a world cup XC race, you would not rather have this fork than an RS1.
  • 30 1
Comparing XC forks to AM/FR forks is like comparing apples to passionfruit.
  • 13 1
yea, nothing beats a passion fruit. soooo much passion!
  • 25 2
Pretty cool throwback and thank God they are offering in a 26" as well which seems to be more and more being edged out of the market with new releases.

I'm guessing coming from Fox though paired with being a new model, the service interval has gone down to every 15 hours now...? That is the only reason I will choose another product over Fox, their intervals are pretty silly compared with other products.

But praise the gods a new model without a whole 3 settings to choose from!
  • 26 0
Yeah glad I can look at a new 26" 160mm fork this year.
  • 8 4
I don't know what fork company you are comparing service intervals too but rockshox and fox have the same intervals for servicing both 50 hours for a change of oil
  • 4 1
Pretty sure It was 30 hours for fox... www.mojo.co.uk/intervals.html
  • 4 0
it's 30 hours now for fox forks
  • 3 0
Sorry that was my mistake I was looking at the 2011 intervals
  • 8 0
Maybe fox thought they needed to sell more oil
  • 3 2
 Pike is 100 hours
  • 4 0
100 for the dampers same as fox the difference is the oil bath 30 for fox 50 for rockshox and the pike
  • 2 0
Either way i'm long overdue across the board...
  • 16 1
I like bolt on axles! I always have allen keys on hand, it takes 20 seconds. Bolt ons are lighter and stiffer. If I get a flat on the trail my allens are right next to the tube and pump. Don't be a monkey and over tighten bolts and you won't have problems.
  • 6 0
Agreed. I paid $10 for a preset allen torque wrench and it makes the process stupid simple.
  • 7 2
really? i'd take a maxle over that system any day. just increases the chance of you losing the bolts or over tightening every time you change it, and makes it way slower if, for example, you're whipping it in and out of the car on a daily basis.
  • 5 2
The bolts never need to be that lose or that tight. People stripping bolts in lowers need to pay attention to what they are doing, plain and simple. Keep things clean and lightly lubed and you will have no issues. I used the old Marz system that had 3 pieces per bolt, and a qr for years it never was an issue. Wipe things off and use some oil once in a while.
  • 3 2
I like the old tool free design. What if you've lost your allen key or don't have one because blah blah blah etc….
So much faster to remove wheel with old system …
pinch bolts meh
  • 1 0
I always preferred the way my 2010 boxxer axle fastened up compared to the 2011 talas 36's I'm using now.
  • 11 0
Glad they kept the rc2 in the 36 & didn't try putting that damn CTD in. But personally I'm going to wait to see if Marzocchi updates their 55/66 to go along with the 350/380 series and the new DBC.
  • 1 3
good marz is known as DVO these days Smile
  • 9 0
 26 + 36 + 20 + 160 = 242 The number of the beast?

I don't ride a 29er but I know a few big guys that will be stoked to have a 29 36 RC2 option. Grats to Fox to keep an open ear to all wheel sizes, addressing stiction, and still keeping the RC2 option.

The 70s decals are dope too. It would be cool if foxhead did a cool retro kit.
  • 1 0
As amazing as it would be they are two totally separate companies now Frown
But you could get a load of those decals and stick them on a jersey
  • 4 0
A Fox RC2 36 29er fork in 150mm would be awesome. Just Float, no Talas. Yes. 2015 will be a good year to buy a new bike.
  • 2 0
"Big Guys?" I'm 5'9", weigh 135, and ride a 29er... good option though to finally get a longer fork.
  • 1 2
I dunno, a 29" wheel on a 36 could feel like a wet noodle on stilts
  • 1 0
The article says the retro decals are going to be sold for any model of Fox fork/shock. That said, I'm unsure if they are referring to the ones they're showing on the forks in the article, or the random assortment of stickers they show on the old shock in the picture of the section about the retro decals.
  • 17 7
nice concept but why have they gone back to pinch bolts?...... they are so irritating
  • 4 1
That picture looks like CAD so it might be a pre-production image. They may release it with the clamps which the current 36s have
  • 8 4
I really hope so cos otherwise they've take a step back 6 years
  • 13 1
I suspect they'll stick with the pinch bolts for the sake of weight saving. Swapping out the QR for two simple steel bolts saves ~45-50g. That half pound they saved has to come from somewhere.
  • 24 3
I actually prefer the pinch bolts, much cleaner look and lighter. I feel it is more secure as well.
  • 1 2
Only one of the models shown has pinch bolts. The other 2 are QR.
  • 4 0
Yeah pinch bolts are no problem although TBH if I have to use an allen key I prefer maxles.

But that said this obviously allows them to support both 15 & 20mm hubs so that's pretty cool.
  • 2 0
Looks like they've redesigned the pinch bolts too as the early ones didn't have enough material and cracked not from over stress by over torque but from impacts on lower leg the qr version was far better ! Also wonder if the adaptors will also be able to be fitted to other previous 36's but in all honesty 20mm is still a better option. Imho.
  • 2 0
I preferred the QR because it quicker and easier than the pinch bolts. Also the pinch bolts also seem to strip either at the thread or the head. I would prefer to have 50g more and have QR but that's just my opinion.
  • 12 4
a new convertible thru-axle design that works both with 15mm and 20mm - at last you bastards! Did it hurt to bring the true, one and only 20mm back? What took you so long ? :>
  • 7 2
….they always had 20mm on their 36 forks...
  • 7 0
 RIP CTD.

(except for maybe entry level forks) too broad of range of riding styles out there to group into 3 clicks.
  • 6 0
The big question is if they will offer it in a 1 1/8" steerer. Figures they would announce this 3 days after I installed my Marzocchi 55cr.
  • 11 0
Sorry, guys. We forgot to mention that we'll offer 26" models with a 1-1/8" steer.
  • 1 0
Lol, I was thinking the same thing. My 2014 55cr just arrived a couple days ago. Only 150mm fork with 1 1/8 straight steerer I know of without stepping down to the 32's. Although with a 15% coupon at Jenson, I only paid $475. I'd imagine this fork will be $1000+ which helps me feel better about my choice Smile
  • 1 0
 What about a 1.5 steerer???
  • 1 0
I bought the 55CR on the same deal. I am happy with the Marzocchi, but the 300 grams in weight difference would have been nice. Props to Fox for recognizing that there is a still a large market for 1 1/8" steerers and 26" wheels (also thank you for responding). It is incredibly frustrating that in a few short years (for example Turner used a 1 1/8" headtube until 2011 and my wife's 2010 Specialized Stumpjumper has one also) most manufactures have seemingly pretended that they never existed. I wonder how many sales Rockshox and Manitou will lose on the on the Pike and Mattoc by not making them available that way. At least there are now two good choices (I don't count the BOS forks with their exorbitant pricing and very limited availability).
  • 6 0
looks like fox finally have a fork to rival the new pike.... its about time they realised no real mountain biker wants a ctd fork!!!
  • 1 0
I sadly have a CTD on my Am bike... I don't want it though, and agree with ya Smile
  • 2 0
i've never tried a CTD fork, why is it so bad? Sorry my ignorance!
  • 1 2
its just kinda pointless, A lockout I can see, but to have 3 settings when you could have endless settings with regular damping controls feels like a step backwards, its great if you are not experienced with your bike or tuning up a suspension, not so great if you like to tweak your fork to get it Exactlly Where you like it... I always think I could tune mine better, but am limited in what I can do, My dh bike on the other hand is Perfectly tuned.
  • 5 1
I like ctd on my trail bike and i think ppl miss the whole point of ctd.. it's not to dumb down anybody's intelligence on setting up their suspension. It's purpose is to be able to instantly change the dynamics of a trail bike and to be able do it while riding. Fast, pedaly, flowey trails? Click it to trail mode and pop of everything and pedal fast... not stop and go through 10 different settings between your fork and shock to get a different feel. But you already know this.. it's just become cool to bag on Fox.
  • 4 2
@Dirk 77. Never, not even once, have I been riding any of my bikes and thought, "Hey, I am climbing, so I should adjust my suspension settings. Oh wait, here comes a level trail. I should readjust my suspension again. Oh man, a descent! I should adjust my suspension to make the most of this." CTD is stupid gimmick and it was a mistake from day one. Fox went from producing (arguably) the best suspension in the industry to mediocre quality products with durability issues and stupid gimmicks.

I will add that this new 36 looks promising. I might have to put Fox back on my list of suspension companies to watch.
  • 3 1
Jt4265 so if u have a mile long climb u wouldnt even lock out your fork??? That is what i am getting out of ur comment.
  • 1 0
Don't know about him, but I sure as hell wouldn't lock out a fork in any situation. It's about fitness and maintaining proper riding position, with properly setup suspension.
  • 1 0
Ya, to each their own i guess.. i don't ever use the lockouts on the front or rear but i do use trail mode a lot. Sometimes i just don't want 6.5 inches of squish, i want it hard and fast.. yep that right, hard and fast.. Smile
  • 1 0
I do use lockout when im riding pavement TO trails, otherwise no... I still think a properly tuned shock is a better option and Am Looking into Getting a CCDBair on my enduro ( rear ) as it HAs lockout setting if needed and If it feels even close to the awesomeness of the coil version Im sold. Thinking of trying to get an Dvo perhaps on the front... time and budget will tell. I sure Don't hate my fox Suspension, just not a huge fan of the CTD .
  • 1 0
MDRipper, if I have a lockout, I will probably use it for a long climb. But a lockout and CTD are two completely different things. I would rather have suspension tuned to suit my preferences than a silly gimmick that lets me change suspension settings unnecessarily.
  • 2 0
 Exactlly. ^^ Salute
  • 3 0
I just put a new old stock freshly suspensionwerx tuned 36 fit rlc kashima 160 on my ride. best fork I have ever had nothing here to make me excited except maybe a blacked out graphics kit…
I like my 20mm axle with qr's pinch bolts whatever. My marz44 fork with 32mm stanchions weighed 230 grams more than my fox 36 160… ya and the new arches look weird
Light enough for me
  • 3 0
I have been selling myself on a Pike lately, but a new 36 for 27.5 might be the ticket to getting of my 26" 36 and into the mix of new 27.5 trail bikes. Just a little late on Fox, as the new Nomad's all spec'd with Pike.
  • 2 0
Good job Fox with the new lineup! Fox also has another surprise that will be released very soon. The Pike fork is so over rated my Pike crapped out after 2 months of riding black stanchions started showing wear and the fork was sticktion. The Pike IMO is the worst fork next to my Reba. I should not have listened to all the hype.
  • 2 1
20mm is for free ride...don't even notice with a solid damper...which means the Pike. I love fox but all you folks seem to care about is image. I run fox rear suspension because it is superior and a Pike on my trail bike because of the same reason. Be loyal to no one as they don't give a Sh#% about your loyalty anyways...it's all branding and image. Everyone gets their turn at the top. I am a fox fan, but I am no true believer. I ride whats good because I spend my hard earned money on it and besides we are just riding bicycles.
  • 5 1
I'm glad that Fox calls doesn't call 1 fork by itself a forks. Lol simple gripe from speaking to customers all day
  • 1 0
Saw Vimeo service video and seriously impressive on internals. Threaded travel spacers to take you from 180 down in 10mm increments. It's looking pretty factory. Also offering volume spacers for air shaft. Shit, just my old RC2 at 4lbs woulda been great.
  • 1 0
Well....I will amend a previous comment, the new Fox 36 is a true contender, only time will tell, but I am glad to see something so solid from Fox on the front end, well done boys!
  • 4 0
HOPEFULLY I CAN GET MY SHITTY 2012 TALAS REPLACED WITH ONE OF THESE.
  • 1 0
 CTD talas? or RC2?
  • 1 0
 RC2
  • 2 0
hmm. I've heard of some issues with the RLC.. too much friction.. what are the issues you're having?

Been changing seals and putting oil in them? I'd suppose so.. but if not, it's pretty easy and will get them working better.. Can even just put some oil in the bottom without totally dropping the fork and swapping seals. easy.
also, with the foam rings in the seals, it's good to point your bike up for a little bit before riding.. let's the oil flow up and wet the foam so it's not sliding dry.. You may already do all this, but thought it might help a little if not. Cheers- J
  • 1 0
I have the 2012 RLC Fit 36 kashima it is very plush. The travel adjust on the talas is what adds all the stiction. Have travel adjust removed it will feel a lot better.. Ie turn it into a float..
  • 1 0
Yes, it is indeed the Talas that makes it unreliable. I've done all the oil changes etc. I just feel that for all the adjustments it has its really hard to find a middle ground where it is good for jumping and rocks...
  • 1 0
 Get it pushed maybe?
  • 2 0
Ah brings back memories of my RM400c with those fox airshocks fitted. Good times happy days. 20 mm TA thanks the only thing been stopping me getting a Pike
  • 1 0
So what are the travel options going to be for the 36? 180 and 160? For all three wheel sizes? Or does 29" only get 160, and the other two are both? This article is such a tease!
  • 2 0
"• 32, 34, 36, and 40 use an advanced lubrication oil that integrates Molybdenum from the Kashima Coat formula"

Are they refering to the 20Wt Gold ?
  • 4 1
I just hope they aren't referring to a NEW proprietary oil...it's those types of things that make me mad (just like the proprietary shock mount Specialized uses in their Enduro bikes...really limits your options for replacements and spares).
  • 1 1
Sure sounds like they've tried to do a proprietry fork oil. Doesn't matter though, it's not like their damping system is that different to everything else, just stick normal oil in and it will be fine.
  • 2 0
goddammit I just bough a 36! Same thing happened when I bought my CCDB air then they announce the the CS. Oh well my bike still feels pretty good.
  • 3 0
 "Convertible thru-axle design: works with both 15mm and 20mm thru-axles "

Why did this not come out earlier?
  • 2 0
FOX, Please put A2C numbers on your website. It is important information for many, in order to maintain or dial in geometry.
  • 3 0
molyslip in the lower legs lol
  • 1 0
will those graphics increase my travel to 160mm? haha just kidding but really when are the graphics available? i want to change up the look of my bike a bit.
  • 4 1
Does this mean i can finally get 160mm travel fork for my 29er now???
  • 3 3
Erm, you have been able to get one for the last year? It's called the Pike.
  • 2 0
Erm... no. The aftermarket Pike was/is only available up to 150mm in 29.

Fuzzwuzz: I am stoked about it too, I want a longer stroke fork bad!
  • 1 2
Erm, I suggest you type 'Rock Shox Pike 29 160' into Google.

There has always been a 160mm 29" Pike.
  • 1 0
Erm yuh, I did, and nothing came up...

The Pike only goes up to 150mm... check their website.

www.sram.com/rockshox/products/pike-rct3
  • 1 0
Try a bit harder, your Google isn't working Wink

There is about 20 links on the first page to 160mm 29" Pike.

I know they exist, I have one attached to the front of my Enduro 29....
  • 2 0
See Fox making a 20mm axle work makes everybody happy. Well done but I hope there is a 1-1/8 straight option as well.
  • 6 1
We will offer 26" models with 1-1/8" steer tube.
  • 2 0
 Awesome Smile
  • 3 0
Is that 36 only, or also for 2015 34's?

Also; Bullseye!
  • 3 0
Holy crap - Fox have just grabbed my full attention. I welcome you back to my world (and wallet) Fox Smile On that note - any clue as to when we can expect to hear about pricing?
  • 1 0
3-positions are all thats needed they say. Now they re-introduce the 2010 forks with high and low speed compression damping. Wait..they have 40th anniversary BNG. Amazing.
  • 1 0
relating to the bottom picture is that the new prototype Fox super RAD shock
  • 1 0
Special Edition and Fox....THAT will be expensive! But yes, looks awesome. I want it!
  • 2 0
Looks awesome! I would buy it if I had the cash
  • 2 0
oh man that Honda is so nice! memories.....
  • 2 0
 The good ol days!!
  • 1 0
Wonder if Marzocchi will go all Specialized on Fox for using an arch that resembles the classic M-arch?
  • 12 0
Considering they're Italian...I'd imagine it's more likely the head of FOX's engineering department will wake up with a fox's head in his bed!
  • 1 0
 10/10
  • 1 0
Wondering what they're going to do with 180mm version? Are they're going to leave it as it is ?
  • 2 1
Looks good, there are a lotta fox haters on here, but i have had good luck with them.
  • 11 0
You had good luck with Fox haters?
  • 5 0
Yup i make sure to dial in my fox haters before i ride, they bring me more luck than a four leaf clover.
  • 2 0
Glad to see an update in the graphics as well, it was long overdue!
  • 2 0

Come on, put a quick release on that 36!

Now what will be the available travel for that 36? 160? 170 as well?
  • 3 3
@Rockshox. Look at this. This is consumer friendly : Let the customers choose the axle they like. I'd buy a pike but never with 15mm....

Looking forward to a Charger damped and lighter Lyrik to knock the ass out of these.

36 could grab the 170-180 market but the pike is gna own the 150-160 niche for some time.

My guess for the 36rc2 for price is about 1700

Didn't Fox just change over to all new seals two years ago?
Wonder if these will also be retro-fittable.

 The BIG QUESTION is PRICE?
  • 1 0
 BIG PRICE of course
  • 1 2
Cool! Don't need a new fork, nor do I have a 29er so the stealthy fork isn't for me this time around, no matter how awesome it seems. New decals though... Hmmmm.

 Sweet decals

 What is break away force?
  • 2 0
Stiction. The amount of force needed to overcome static friction. The seal sticks on the stanchion when the lowers aren't moving. There is more force needed to move the seal on the stanchion from standstill than there is for it to slide once it is moving. Sliding furniture on carpet is a good example of the extra force needed to get something sliding.
