Jamis Bicycles announces the signing of Macky Franklin and Syd Schulz to compete aboard all new Jamis Defcon Series enduro bikes.

Jamis

The new Defcon Series was designed from the ground up for modern enduro riding. “We set out to design a no-holds-barred enduro racer while never losing sight of ensuring Defcon could take you anywhere you wanted to go in the mountains.”, says Sal Crochiola Jamis’ mountain bike product manager. “Being based on the east coast where our riding goes from flowy to extremely technical and rocky in the blink of an eye, there’s a pedigree that’s built into all of Jamis’ mountain bikes to handle anything that gets thrown at them. Defcon takes that pedigree to a new level. We’re excited to have Macky and Syd riding, racing and providing feedback to the product team throughout the year.”

Being a family-owned and operated business since 1937 (the oldest bicycle company still under original family ownership in the United States), it’s important for anyone riding for Jamis’ racing programs to understand they’re being brought into a family. “We’re a tight-knit group here at Jamis.”, says company president Carine Joannou, “We work hard together and play hard together. We enjoy each other’s company and we all work together day in and day out to deliver great experiences for people who choose to ride Jamis bicycles. So when we talk with athletes interested in representing our brand, their character is the most important attribute to us. Winning is great. But having athletes that feel like they are part of the family and want to perform their best for the brand is the most important thing to us. With Macky and Syd there was an instant connection and I couldn’t be happier they’ll be seeking out their adventures aboard Jamis bicycles.”

Jamis

Macky and Syd will focus mainly on the Enduro Cup and Big Mountain Enduro Series for 2016 while traveling to exotic destinations around the globe and documenting their adventures via their websites and social media outlets. Macky has been a consistent top-5 finisher in the United States enduro scene. He’s racked up 25 professional wins in 21 states and 11 countries. Syd had an impressive 2015 as well, competing and landing on the podium at some of the toughest enduro events around the globe. The couple travel the world together finding adventure by bicycle. Sal continues, “When we were discussing sponsorship opportunities in enduro and speaking with athletes, it was Macky and Syd that just clicked with us. Their passion and story mirror what we strive for at Jamis every day. So we’re thrilled to welcome them into the Jamis family.” Syd enthusiastically adds, “Jamis has felt like the perfect fit since the beginning of the process. 2016 is going to be a big year for us and we're very stoked to be partnering with Jamis. The Defcon is dialed and I can't wait to race it!” While Macky chimes in, “I'm extremely excited to be part of the Jamis family and to work with Jamis as they continue to build new and innovative enduro bikes. 2016 is going to be awesome!

Jamis really needs to sign some new engineers and welders. I cold hear that frame Crack as soon as I opened the article.

Can't get past the only three frames ive broken have all been jamis....hopefully this has better chainstays than my parker did....
  • 3 0
Yeah that chainstay looks more twisted than a churro
  • 2 0
2 parker chainstays and an xam for me. 3 broken chainstays = no more jamis for me....... plus they are ugly

So true. My first full suspension was a Jamis Dakar. Parents were super stoked to find an older jamis FS in a extra small 13" frame. I was a young light weight kid and still broke the rear chainstays multiple times. Cracked the headtube and had it welded. On the plus side, Jamis was nice about warrantying the parts for the frame but it was a reoccurring problem.

Nope, word on the streets is that he's signing with Pro Flex. They're about to announce the return of the flex stem and since Gwinn doesn't even need suspension it's a perfect match!

Just went through their build packages. Things are going to change. The more I look at YT, Cube, Polygon, Commencal and even Giant; you get so much more bike for the $$$. I have always wanted a SC but for $3K less I can get into a better equipped aluminum frame. Seriously looking at the Capra AL2.

Jamis Defcon 2 - $3800 w/ RS rc3 plus monarch and rc pike
Reign 2 - $3400 w/ RS r monarch and rc pike
Capra 2 - $3300 w/ RS rc3 plus monarch and rc3t pike

YT has to be killing it?I save $700+ on the build kit as the consumer and YT makes an extra $1400 above selling to the LBS. now that YT is producing XL frames I got a decision to make. Any other suggestions on best 160+ builds looking for at least rc both front and rear with a SLX/GX build?

Go ask in YT Capra Owners or/and YT-Industries' bikes thread.
Hopefully they can help you.

good luck getting a yt in stock... i got a commencal because the carpas sold out thought the end of the year.

If you are serious about buying a bike consider going to a reputable shop and tell them your budget. Don't be afraid to negotiate because they WILL sell you a bike for a good amount under MSRP. Show them a comparable YT or Commencal/etc that you want. I used to be very high on buying bikes online until my most recent purchase (from a shop). I've had a few issues with an x01 cassette and a dropper post where they were able to get warranty replacements for free due to the relationship with the manufacturer. They covered all the labor and I didn't have to be without my bike. Just food for thought...

No doubt @ryan83 I have had frames replaced under manufacturers warranty. I know the value of my LBS in that process and one of many reasons I recommend Giant. I have no complaints, but getting top end shock and fork for much less. I can see why this model will work. Just look at the build kits. I just see so many with dumbed down suspension. All shocks and forks should come with both rebound and compression minimum. It just numbs me out.

The Norco Range is a great bike. Probably not as well equipped as a YT but I do love mine for the way it rides.
  • 1 0
Norco's have great msrp this year, probably thanks to the exchange rate with Canada.

My mouth dropped when spencer 666 mentioned ProFlex, I thought I was the only one who remembered them. You can't mention ProFlex without mentioning Noleen forks and Biopace cranks
  • 3 0
Noleen had an electronically controlled fork, IIRC.

And don't forget about the rock ring!

I actually raced against two guys riding this bike at a local Eastern States Cup enduro race last season, these bikes look awesome in person. Picture doesn't do it justice, would love to swing a leg over one and take it for a rip

"Being a family-owned and operated business since 1937 (the oldest bicycle company still under original family ownership in the United States)"

That is not true.
Jamis was started by Ron Jamis in Tallahassee, FL in the early 80's the Joannou's purchased it in 1990

I loved Noleen, they gave me several forks over a year or so to ride and give feedback on. I first talked to them in Chicago at a bike show, very nice people and the air forks were very plush for that time. I also had the IIRC fork but didn't like it as much as the air fork.

I had a Noleen Shock on a Supergo - the stay kept snapping, but the shock was a plush 2.5 " !!! - that was downhill at the time.

I know Macky from skills work, and he's a dedicated, smart athlete. Also a good guy. Go Macky and Syd!

be strange to not see those 2 not on pivots

I think jamis doesn't realize that every thinks of them as a cheap bike maker. Please tell their pricing dept.
  • 5 1
They price their bikes so they look like a good deal when they're immediately marked down 30%, at that point their price comparable to a Giant/Trek, but usually heavier and with their faux-bar suspension.

Like Diamondback, they go for the consumer that thinks they're getting a great deal because it's 40% off, and I suppose the high MSRP (which no-one pays) increases the perceived value.
