definetly my favourite too. so much style and power. he must have messed up a section.

comparing the two Bruni looked pretty relaxed and rolling while Blenki was on the gas everywhere. I thought he was going to take it. That's racin'. I love this stuff!

Yea sucks we didn't see the steep teck bits. I'm sure the race was won or lost on the parts we didn't see. Sam was trying to make up the lost time for sure

I think he said he messed up the root gap [the one at 1.16-1.20?] on Vitals slideshow www.vitalmtb.com/photos/features/Crankworx-Rotorua-Downhill,8752/Slideshow,0/sspomer,2

Blenki looks fast and loose all the time, but I'm pretty sure he's loosing time with that silly "pedaling all over the place" thing. He needs to just stop and start winning races.

Blenki is one of my favourite racers and I'm really eager for him to get a win. It will no doubt come soon. I can't help but feel as if he attacks the track too hard during his race runs though. You can see his frustration at the end of nearly all of his race runs as he comes to the finish line. He puts it all out there and lets it all hang out rather than riding on the edge but within himself. Small margins I know but that seems to be all it takes at that level.

Watching Blenki pedal his butt off made me think back to Mulally's Hafjel "chainless" run. Those who remember that race will recall the absolute shock of Page and Warner when Neko's first split came up and Page screamed "he's UP! Rob, he's UP!" They had both just finished offering their disappointed condolences to Neko and wished him better luck in the next race that he entered because they figured that his run was a write-off. Well, that definitely wasnt the case, was it? It would seem to be an extremely counter intuitive concept, but could it be a hindrance to pedal all the time? Could a rider like Blenki actually be riding slower than he would be if he were to pedal less? Looking at Neko's run, it seems tucking, pumping, maximizing line choice and working the track for all its worth could be a huge benefit if you were to combine it with just the right amount of pedalling. Maybe a slightly calmer, more controlled approach would be what Blenki needs to finally grab the top step. He's definitely close to it at this point. Amazing World Cup season ahead to be sure.

Watch Neko Mulally's race clip again, they didn't show the first split time on screen, but if you click to around the 3:10 mark in the YouTube video you will hear Lord Warner say (after they realize he's up near the end of the stage): "He's gone from 3rd at split # 1 to fastest at split # 2!"

Early on, they were offering their disappointed condolences based on the information they had (that he was in 3rd at split # 1). They weren't really crying the blues for him just because he lost his chain... they apparently did have timing numbers to back that up.

However, having said that, I don't disagree with anything else you said. I've raced in stages where pedaling everything like mad just meant I had to brake and ruin everything in the corners. I truly believe that riding smoothly without a chain (on a DH specific course) could be faster than making a bunch of mistakes and trying to fix it by smashing the pedals.

Hey guys, it's clear Blenki made a mistake somewhere as he had a cut little finger/pinkie on his left hand which he examined twice on cam after his race run (see here: www.pinkbike.com/news/coming-up-live-crankworx-rotorua-dh-2015.html).

I'm in no way French but for some reason I'm always cheering on Loic, came so close last year I'm hoping he gets top step in the world cups a few times this year Also massive props to everyone involved in crankworx Rotorua, have seen nothing but smiles on everyone's face which has to be a first for any even if this size

Maybe you are just a little bit french.

This was the first downhill race I've seen. Just curious; why didn't the cameras cover the start of the runs? The live feed picked up the rider at (average) 1 min 42 sec into their run already in the woods.

Costs. It's expensive to run cables all the way up a mountain especially for a live stream. If they were going to do a recap it'd be less expensive to do so.
  • 16 0
The next racer starts before the previous racer has finished so it's impossible to show full runs on a live broadcast.

this is Crankworx its not its first year NBN very disapointing live stream and follow up vid, having helped work on that track, most of the best DH sections in the trees people who rely in this stream to see the riders and the track, were missed out on some amazing potential non footage of the best parts lf the track by a long way, its 2015, not 2005! no excuses to me! Its a priority thing DH is not the main event for CWX and thats what I think, if its to grow bigger taking it round like this the better coverage as much as it appreciated now is needed, MTB CW are fwd thinking people dont run it like a US Network cable tv company or worse our local one and only satalite tv coverage company, they are archaical legacies and thinking.

I'm quite surprised given the huge deal Crankworx made of fronting equal prize money for men and women alike, that in their official video, they chose to only highlight the first place in the Women's, yet highlight the whole podium in the men's.
Surely financial equality should be running alongside equality in media coverage, and essentially respect of the women finishing 2nd and 3rd?
It seems a shame, as it was really quite nice to see a relatively unimportant and unknown discipline and event (I'm talking in the grand scheme of things of the cycling world as a whole, I in no way hold this opinion) really pioneering with a push against a traditionally patriachal sport.
The women are just as enjoyable and inspirational to watch, and this is perfectly summed up in the very last part of this video from the EWS track over on Vital

But still, respect Crankworx nonetheless, you didn't need to give out equal amounts of dough, but you are, just don't shoot yourself in the foot too soon.

(Also this whole event has been super enjoyable to watch, props)

It could be to do with participation numbers, highlighting the whole podium for the women would have been highlighting a quarter of the entrants, it you highlighted a quarter of the men's field you would have had to have a 20 minute video. Great to see the women getting equal recognition in terms of prize money though as those who do race put in just as much heart, effort and commitment as the men. It would just be great to see more women get into racing at a high level.

I don't think its that big of a deal since plenty of team videos will showcase their lady rippers. At the end of the day, its just a single edit. Its nothing you need to go on a feminist crusade over... sheesh

Sucks about Mick - nothing but bad luck for him - Also, wasn't Greg Minnaar down there as well? I thought I saw a pic of him in practice.

Was stoked for Elliot Jackson, seems like a chilled out cool dude, Blienkys run was insane pity he couldn't have nailed it, but he looks so amazing on the bike, good results by many kiwis and french, also keep on eye on Keegan Wright that boy is on the right curve to Glory, and soon to be one if not already the next big thing out of NZ, keep doing what youre doing Keegs you are ever improving and dont let this go to your head, haha, well done boi, braap
